It is extremely unlikely that a new net book will be out from Apple until next year.

If it was going to be announced at WWDC then we'd almost certainly have seen some leaked info on it and there has been none.

will the cheaper iPhone be 3rd Gen, or just a downgraded 3G version??

Like when Sony came out with the cheaper PS3, that didnt play PS2 games, has less vents for the fans, 2 USB ports and no card reader

I use to have a PC till I got the new iMac 2 weeks ago, all I can say is that the Hype for Mac products is true, Mac kicks ass and that's it, if someone doesn't want to get a Mac product just becaue is "popular" in this case is there lost!

All I can say to myself is why did I wait so lonnng to get a Mac, in a good way the wait was good because now I have a 8g memory for my iMac:D

They make good reliable computers with no bs, no pop up messages that comes up every 5 minutes like PC. Plus excellent customer service.

Apple just earned a new Mac junkie LOL

Ah, another "informed" Mac user with too much money in his hands... or at least you used to... :p

Why would anyone buy a top of the line iMac with overpriced 2x4Gb dimms and not a Mac Pro is beyond me. Unless for the bragging rights of course.

These analysts are notoriously uninformed. Especially this one.

Wouldn't it make more sense that Apple will retain iPhone 3G and lower its price. And also release the new iPhone at consistent/higher price points?

OS 3.0 will work on all models, but for some features (video, what have you), you'll need to be running the higher-end hardware.

Explain how that makes sense from a production standpoint, though - spending production and QAQC resources as well as customer service resources on two separate architectures?

I disagree.

With the comparable power in the MacBook Pro and MacBook I can't really ever justify getting an iMac, although the 24" screen is a thing of beauty.

I want to add the 30" cinema display to my office soon, though. That'll solve my desire for a powerful computer (my MBP) and big display.

Kinda my whole point, for that amount of money there's a number of better solutions.

Get a grip!!

If they don´t make a clear and significant differentiation with this new model, I guess we'll see A LOT of people complaining the same way people did when the price was dramatically dropped shortly after its intro. But on the other hand, that would be Apple´s "business as usual"... upgrading products and lowering prices more too often, driving lots of customers to frustration or bitterness towards Apple.
That has to be one of the most backwards and ignorant views of Apple and the electronics industry in general. The only reason we have the computers and cell phone we have today is that companies like Apple have driven performance up while controlling or lowering costs.

There are a number of reasons why the initial iPhone was expensive, like wise there are reasons why the coming generation will be faster and cheaper. A big component there is the march forward in functionality integrated onto silicon. It is the double edge sword that allows for faster more capable systems while at the very same moment offering cheaper hardware.

Don't knock it as this is how we got to the point where we are today with respect to personal electronics.
Still, IMO the biggest drawback of getting an iPhone outside the US are the very expensive plans you must pay to get one, specially when it comes to monthly bandwidth, as in all cases it's distributed by only one carrier. I really hope they'd make it more affordable on the distribution side of the business, allowing more carriers to sell it - encouraging a stronger price/value competition.

This is very much true. In part though I see this as limiting growth on purpose. Like it or not getting a 3G network up and running is not something done instantly. Nor can one make 100% accurate guesses about where network traffic will be heaviest. I suspect rates will come down when AT&T is satisfied they have worked out the major kinks in their network.

Competition doesn't hurt of course but in the case of 3G GSM how much competition would there have been at roll out time if all carriers had access to the iPhone. Yes competition is good but if the alternatives play by different rules (CDMA?) or not at all, is it really competition? It looks like we will not see competition on a level playing field until LTE. Sad but that appears to be the case in the USA.

As to AT&T; yeah the contract is a bit stiff at a hair over $70 a month with the lowest cost plan. It is not however excessively so considering the competition. Shave that extra $10 that they added with the 3G model and it really won't be that bad. That combined with the fact that I really haven't had any issues at all with AT&T service makes for a acceptable experience.

Ah, another person that likes assume.

So you don't have to assume anymore.

I have a Mac Pro in the studio, now when I go home I like to work on my projects, so I have alot of plugins, virtual instruments etc... I need the 8G memory to run whatever I want at the sametime and not worry.

So instead of assuming that I just want to show off (and to who anyway?) why don't you be a positive person and assume that I need what I have?

I can't wait until teh new phone is available so we can switch from all these threads to the "I just bought a 3G a week ago and the new iphone video is now available, what can I do" threads

Luckily, here in the UK, the network provider for the iPhone, 02, gives existing customers the option to upgrade to the new model when it's released. They just have to start a fresh new contract and pay a few squid.

By the way, what makes you think that I purchased my 8g memory at the apple store.

The "informed" person is clearly not you, get facts on why people do things that they do, and then form your own opinion, not the other way around.

These cheaper phone rumors are cool andeverything, but why hasn't anyone mentioned the new stereo Bluetooth headset that apple is coming out with? I'm extreemly interested and bearing about that. That is probably the $99 tag instead of the 4 gig phone

I want a cheaper iphone in the sense that I don't want to pay $70 a month. I don't care about initial price, I just want lower monthly plans.

I'm with you. I'd really love an iphone but I can't justify spending $70/month to have it

I know that it's still a large sum of money to be spending on a phone, but with the iphone 3gs looming around the corner, you might as well shell out some more for it rather then spending $100-$200 for 3g.

(Personally, though, as someone with a 3g already that's faaairly recently purchased, I think I'll wait until I see other people with 3gs and see if it's really much-improved for me to shell out hundreds more to upgrade.)
