Rather than hurt their premium pricing position with price cuts, why not double the RAM on every machine, upgrade the HD size, and throw in iWork and MobileMe for free?

Once you slash prices, it's hard to raise them again (ask Dell). So keep the prices where they are but sweeten the deal to make it irresistible.

it would possibly help get people to try a mac.. become addicted and move up to a "bigger"machine...

Value for money

I currently own a number of Apple products and have been very happy about their performance and my user experience. I would have no problem recommending getting a Apple computer to anyone as extra money is offset by great OS and the simple ease of use. However in the UK we are seeing an increase in subsidized deals from broadband providers which offer laptops free with a contract. This kind of deal on paper makes Apple seam like an expensive option and many people now treat computers more like mobile phone handsets. The fact that people will spend £350 on a iphone without contract and £1000 for a Macbook for the ease of use is the main difference between PC and Apple. A cheaper introduction into switching to Apple would be good for business but I hope it will not be by offering contracts with mobile broadband.

Does your hand get tired while "using" your Apple? Have you had to shave your palms?
No. Unlike you, I actually mate with other humans - the Mac merely functions as an attribute of enhancement.

Macs get you laid. :D

iPhone Bitch!!! Amazing piece, characaturizations, voice overs, content, wit, and absolutely love the "I am the Mighty Finder" song. "Death to conventional thinking..."

Just because I don't agree with the Apple fanboys makes me a troll? This is America. Freedom of speech!

Everyone is free to be a fool too, or to be a time-waster, or a bore. Or even an oaf. Some people make more use of these freedoms than others, of course.

Apple needs to lower prices at least a little. Ever since the switch to Intel, we know the guts of a Mac aren't really any different than that of a similar spec'd PC. It seemed like once Apple made the Intel switch, instead of prices coming down like expeced, they actually increased. Heck, it wasn't so long ago a Mac Mini was $499. There was also a time when you could buy a brand new eMac or iMac G3's for $799. Those were fully equipped computers right out of the box (monitor, keyboard, mouse) unlike the Mini. Its time Apple got some cheaper computers in the mix. Even a low end Mac Pro is almost $1000 more than a base model MDD G4 was just a few years back.

Base model iMac 2000: $799 Base Model iMac 2009: $1199

Base model Mac Mini 2005: $499 Base Model Mac Mini 2009: $599

Base Model Powermac G4 2002: $1699 Base Model Mac Pro 2009: $2499

Doubt it!!

Although it would be nice since I'm hoping to get my fiance a Macbook sometime later this fall after we get married. Her Dell is going to hell right now and I told her that if she wants my tech support she needs to have a mac. I don't offer my services for pcs anymore!

I do hope you have cleared a space on the couch or have a sleeping bag out in the dog house. :rolleyes:

I don't know about this. Apple's mantra is quality before quantity.

Wifi that doesn't work. Plastic laptops that crack. MacBook displays of poorer quality than £300 netbooks. DL-DVI adaptors that don't work.

Hmm- I think they can probably handle that level of quality AND quantity at the same time.

I can't believe that a couple of dozen people voted negative, they actually WANT to pay over the odds for their Apple hardware. :rolleyes:

It would not be the end of the world for Apple to sell the Mac Mini at the same price point as a similarly specified Dell (the Dell would come with mouse, keyboard, monitor, speakers incidentally, and currently costs a couple of hundred pounds LESS than the Mini)

And recently -all the UK prices took a MASSIVE rise. Notice how the recent results for Apple showed a DECREASE it Mac sales, they're record quarter only existing because of iPod/Phone devices.

they need to lower price

I think you guys need to look at apples last quarter. All Mac Sales were down. Most profits were from iphones/ipods. Apple will have to lower price to compete. People would not spend more than 1000 for the white macbook when they could get laptop pcs for around 500 to 600 dollars.. Money does matter now. If apple wont lower their prices, mac sales of next quarter will be down even more. I say they will have to lower all of their laptops by $100. White macbook = 899; aluminum macbook = 1199; macbook pro 1899.

Apple will lower their prices, probably in the summer, everyone will say how wonderful it is because we would have forgotten about the price rise recently

Is that really enough? The white macbooks should be in the 700-800 range. Aluminum should be in the 900 dollar range. The hardware is not that diffrent from a dell or hp.

So do want to sell laptops or do you want them to continue to be satus symbols?

A hundred bucks off isn't going to make a difference. Try...

White MacBook = $699
Alu Macbook = $999 / $1199
MBA = $1299 / $1999
MBP15 = $1499 / $1999
MBP17 = $2299
Mini = $399 / $459
iMac 20" = $999
iMac 24" = $1199 / $1499 / $1899
MP Quad = $1999
MP Octad = $2599

That would place their prices closer to standard margins in the industry.
Sure, the stockholders would cry like little girls but they can wipe their tears with the money they made before the bubble burst.

Apple are proud of their margins and price premium. It is a large part of their positioning. Advertising concentrates on quality, reinforcing the idea that "you get what you pay for". This is as opposed to, say, a $15000 Rolex, which has no benefit over a $150 Casio other than an "I am rich" statement (the App that perfectly displayed this concept).

So they will do everything to avoid lowering prices in response to economic conditions. Doing so says "yeah ok we admit we made the whole thing up, we don't need the premium for R&D or better materials, it's just a dell with a different label", thereby destroying the market positioning.

The bold pricing of the new Mac mini during the recession (someone made the comment on first page) tells us there is no intention to do this. And it would have been evident internally by then that sales were down. They might "round down" or roll back some prices but I seriously doubt it.

If they want to respond to these market conditions, other than launch a new product, the best way is to create seeming "loopholes" in the pricing. Oh it seems Apple overlooked that if you combine this offer with this discount you can get an iMac for $300 less. Or "educational" pricing restrictions can be somewhat relaxed. Bundling deals, combined with some other limited time offers etc etc. If people think the discounts are either unintentional, or that they are getting a special discount off the "normal" price, but the "normal" price is still considered real, then the market positioning will be maintained. Obviously this game will wear thin eventually, but it could be good for at least 12 months while $new_insanely_great product is readied.

Finally, there is zero chance that any tablet or netbook will be competitively priced in that space. Firstly, there is the above reason (brand position). Secondly, if it's any good it will be in demand, so why make it cheap? Finally, there is the inevitable cannibalizing of macbook, MBA or even touch/phone sales. This last point can be reduced by using an iPhone like OS, but at the cost of significant development, and potentially yet another App store, which would be a no no. With the other news going on, it sounds more like they should concentrate on beefing up the iPhone/touch. More power, external (slide in?) monitors, keyboards, projectors etc might offer a differentiated solution rather than the same old crappy underpowered netbooks running desktop OSes. Serious people will still end up with an MB[A|P].
