Do you think it would be safe to think that there will be no issues with over heating?

How much video ram would the AMD Radeon M380 - M395X have?

13 inch rMBP doesn't even have dedicated graphics which is one of the reasons I never bought one. Currently looking for the right laptop though, and a surface could be the way to go - for me anyway.

The new Surface Book does indeed look impressive, I don't care what anyone says. Apple really needs to step it up the 13" rMBP, period.

This is what I am wondering. I really hope they do. I need an upgrade bad and don't really care about retina or 4K.

After moving between my rMBP 13" and my wife's 21" (non-retina) iMac to do some maintenance work, believe me, the display difference is worth it, even if you don't think you need it for much, just to make everything clearer and sharper.

I would prefer Skylake iMacs with thunderbolt 3.

I'd be interested in just the base 21" with quad core and Intel graphics.

I guess the next iMac will be quite the powerhouse

Both AMD and nvidia are moving from 28nm to 16nm next year.
So you'll have 2x graphics performance increase on GPUs.

I ordered my 27" BTO iMac two weeks ago. It just got another bump to ship on the 16th. I suspect something is being upgraded.

why AMD? el capitan still lagging, goodbye 60fps OS forever. at this point cap the frame rate @30fps and make an AD campaign about the cinematic effect of lower frame rate

I was thinking the same thing, I owned a 27" iMac and although I loved it, it did seem a little too big. I might pull the trigger on the 21" if its has enough VRAM and ability to put a i7 processor in it. I would get it maxed out! Hopefully 4GB VRAM Core i7 processor, ill get the standard 8gb ram and then upgrade, 1tb fusion drive :)

Yeah, my worries is that the good GPUs will only be available in the 27". My iMac's GPU just failed last week. But Apple is replacing it for free. My plan is to make my mid-2011 last until sometime next year. So this refresh isn't going to be something I will go for in any case. And if Apple doesn't sell a 21" that works for me, I may try to stretch the 2011 farther.

27 inch really blowed my mind.! this one may be more affordable!! Great great!

My guess is that it will start around $1600. It could go to $1700, but that puts it a bit close to the 27". I don't think it will debut any cheaper than that.

No Skylake I assume?

I assume there waiting for Skylake

Intel shows desktop class cpus as launched, so it shouldn't be too far off.

With a mobile GPU... Well, there goes performance. Most desktop-class GPUs have a hard time pushing such a resolution, let alone mobile GPUs.

As long as they also have some upgraded Thunderbolt displays I'll be happy.

You'll be waiting for some time. They haven't updated displays in lockstep with the imac. The thunderbolt display didn't receive the redesign or updated anti-reflective coatings. I see no reason why this would change now. I think that if they go with thunderbolt again, you may see an update with thunderbolt 3, but I don't expect them to bother with that display this year.

Hmm, might do this + an iPad Air 3/Pro depending on what Apple does with the rMBP next year.

4096x2304, so 2048x1152@2x? That's more workspace at the Best for Retina setting. Surprised to see that considering no one would have complained about 3840x2160. Now just make the 15" Pro 3360x2100 (1680x1050@2x) at the next major revision.

After the today's Microsoft presentation, my feeling is that waiting for an entire year for a 4K display on a 2 years old machine is meaningless.

It is impossible to shoehorn M395X to the current iMac 21.5" form factor. It alone eats all the 125W heat-dispatch capabilities it has. And no 95W 6700K Skylake's will go there either.

So, it could be (5k model comes maybe later):
  • Broadwell 65W with Iris Pro 6200, 8GB DDR3 1866, 128GB SSD as a base model
  • Better model with Radeon M380 4GB vram, SSD 256GB
  • 5k iMac with Skylake i5 65W, 8GB DDR4 2133, M390 4GB vram, SSD 256GB as base model
  • better model with Skylake i7 65W, M395X 4 or 8GB
There. That could be it if the current form factor stays. If hard-disk disappears from 5k model, they could use the extra space for water cooling or other means of heat dispatch and Fiji GPU.

Based on Apple's past, it will only be Broadwell (milking it) and save Skylake for next year's update, but here's hoping. Hopefully they will have Skylake, as I may be tempted to upgrade (from my late 2009 27" iMac)

Apple will deploy Skylake CPUs in their computers when they can reliably get the volumes they need from Intel.
