Apple is planning to launch a Mac trade-in program at its retail stores in the United States and Canada next week, reports Bloomberg.

The new program, which kicks off on June 15 in the United States and June 18 in Canada, will allow customers to exchange a Mac for credit that can be put on a gift card or used to cut the cost of a new computer.

Apple has long allowed Mac trade-ins on its website, but has not accepted Mac trade-ins in its retail store locations. The new Mac trade-in option will join in-store trade-in programs for the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.

According to Bloomberg, Apple may be introducing the program as a way to boost Mac sales by providing customers with an easier way to get a credit for an old machine. With the new trade-in program, customers will no longer need to hassle with doing a trade-in by mail, and can get an immediate credit when making an in-store purchase.

What can I get for my 2007 iMac? How about a 2008 MacBook Air (I think the Air still boots up, even!)

Nice. This definitely simplifies the process from shipping in a system, waiting for confirmation, evaluation, then credit to purchase a new one as it can all be done in store at once. Essentially what they have done with iDevices.

I’d rather sell to Mac of all trades. When I sold my MacBook Pro a while ago it was a super easy process and the check matched the quote. It was a higher price than most other places as well and much easier than dealing with private parties.

Has anyone ever entered their trade in information in Apples website and felt like it was anywhere near fair? Odds are, whether it's them or another entity it will be sold overseas at least twice what they paid you.

it‘s a joke. Before mobile devices were unlocked and were still on two year contracts, many of us used to sell our iPhones unlocked via jailbreaking methods on eBay for $400-$600 every year which allowed us to trade up without having to be on a contract. That changed everything and iPhones and most mobile devices are well over $600 out of pocket now.

We’ve essentially traded value for convenience as now most goods are valued less even if you sell them on your own due to the trade in values set by major corporations and the plethora of selling apps.

They have to feed the refurb machine somehow. Makes sense.

Curious that they say this is coming to Canada, because Apple doesn't even have an iPhone trade-in program in Canada yet.

I'd love to trade my 13" MBP in on a new 16".

I find it to be a smarter decision by selling them myself. I realize that this trade in is no different than when folks trade in their vehicle. However if I can get significantly more by selling privately, I’ll go that route.
Sold my iPhone X right after the Xs models were announced. Paid $1099 at launch and sold for $875.
I guess if you have a disposable income or the private party value isn’t much more, the trade in makes perfect sense.

I feel bad for the retail employees who will be dealing with this on top of the other trade ins. I wonder if they’ll have to have some computers opened up. Seems pretty time consuming already.

I got a killer offer on an iPhone 6 back when they were doubling credit to push XRs. Way more than I could have sold it for online.

I think we do. At least in Toronto, they were quoting me prices for my used iPhone.

It would be nice if the discount was taken right off the newly purchased item. At least you’d save a bit more from the provincial/state sales tax.
