I feel bad for the retail employees who will be dealing with this on top of the other trade ins. I wonder if they’ll have to have some computers opened up. Seems pretty time consuming already.
That's not been my experience at all. I buy the new iPhone every year and net enough from my old one that the upgrade only costs a few hundred dollars. Every December there's a gift card promo at Sam's Club and the cost looks like this:
$1249 (new iPhone 11 Pro Max 256GB)
- $400 gift card
- $725 (sale of last year's iPhone on Swappa)
= $124 plus a few fees
I'd say it averages about $200/year for me to always have the latest iPhone. Not a big deal.
Hmm... maybe it's time to trade in the old LC with IIe or 7600/132
Also, if they ask me for my serial number, why do I then have to tell them every detail of my machine right afterward. Shouldn't they know that?
Only problem with eBay are the fees. On $625 you would pay $62.50 to eBay and $18.42 for PayPal Fees if you had to pay for Shipping lets say around $30 for an iMac. you are left with $514.44 still $264 more then apple, But that does not include all the time spend. Taking photos uploading and shipping. Its not so cut and dry when your time is worth more then that additional gain. They quoted $250 for an iMac... I sold it on eBay for $625... I understand convenience, but leaving almost $400 on the table was silly.
This is true, but still, the extra money made is like 5 hours of work for me, so pretty well worth it. 5 mins to take the pictures, packing it takes no time when you keep the iMac box (never throw that away), shipped with UPS ground (my company has the highest UPS discount and our Shipping clerk handles the label - we basically have a UPS store in the office), I think shipping to Texas was like $17.Only problem with eBay are the fees. What can I get for my 2007 iMac? How about a 2008 MacBook Air (I think the Air still boots up, even!)
Exactly.I checked online for my 2011 imac and they offered to recycle it for me...
Oh there are way more problems with eBay than the fees. They will screw sellers themselves, if buyers don’t screw them enough. I’ve been screwed by a buyer that basically didn’t read the posting or the original specifications. He used me to test hardware and then sent it back abused. He pulled a dispute even before we finished discussing his issue. eBay took his side and screwed me out of all shipping costs.Only problem with eBay are the fees.
Narrator: It wasn't a competitive value.
And then you get taxed on the full sale amount.... right?Only problem with eBay are the fees. But it's a 2016 MBP, I literally can't change anything even if I wanted to. Also, they don't just ask about specs, they even ask me what machine I have (i.e. is it an iMac, a Mac Mini, Macbook Pro, etc), and the year (which again, is something the serial number should be able to give them). That’s an excellent point as I’ve had estimates for my Mac Pros that don’t take into account updates to RAM and solid-state drive, etc. I did call Apple a few times regarding built to order options and updates to systems that don’t show by simply using serial numbers and was informed the estimated price will increase if you phone them and explain any additional hardware that has been added to the device assuming it also follows Apple’s protocols. I have updated a few Mac Pros with non-Apple solid-state drives that Apple said they would take into account for the price differences which surprised me.
Cant wait to be offered $115 for a 2018 MBP.
I assume it was a joke, but not as much of a joke as you'd think. My 2016 MBP would get me 420. It also obviously depends heavily on the way you specced it, "2016 MBP" could be any configuration of machine across three different models. While I assume this is a joke, currently my Late 2016 MBP is $740 for a trade-in.

Ha! For my 2019 15.4" MacBook Pro with 2.4 GHz 8 core i9, 1 TB SSD and 32 GB, they graciously offered to recycle it for me! What a deal! While I assume this is a joke, currently my Late 2016 MBP is $740 for a trade-in.

There has to be a glitch or something with that site. The serial numbers don’t even match up on my computer telling me I have an i9 256GB when it’s an i5 512GB.Ha! For my 2019 15.4" MacBook Pro with 2.4 GHz 8 core i9, 1 TB SSD and 32 GB, they graciously offered to recycle it for me! What a deal!
They will probably tell you that they can recycle it for FREE... lolWhat can I get for my 2007 iMac? How about a 2008 MacBook Air (I think the Air still boots up, even!)
For iPhone and iPad, we do have a trade-in program in Canada. I have asked for quotes here and the valuation is similar to the US. They only want recent devices and will only take more or less spotless ones for a trivial amount of money tho. Basically, it's not worth it if they will take it. Having a second device on your hand is worth more than what they are willing to give you. They have to feed the refurb machine somehow. Makes sense.
Curious that they say this is coming to Canada, because Apple doesn't even have an iPhone trade-in program in Canada yet.
I'd love to trade my 13" MBP in on a new 16".
Still pretty low. I would keep the mac for that price. While I assume this is a joke, currently my Late 2016 MBP is $740 for a trade-in.

The buyer is taxed, yes. You can report, but FL has no state income tax. eBay does not send 1099s, PayPal only will for sales in excess of $20,000 per year. And then you get taxed on the full sale amount.... right?
Has anyone ever entered their trade in information in Apples website and felt like it was anywhere near fair? Odds are, whether it's them or another entity it will be sold overseas at least twice what they paid you.
Totally get it for yourself. I've just had really bad problem with eBay recently. I would take the trade in.This is true, but still, the extra money made is like 5 hours of work for me, so pretty well worth it. 5 mins to take the pictures, packing it takes no time when you keep the iMac box (never throw that away), shipped with UPS ground (my company has the highest UPS discount and our Shipping clerk handles the label - we basically have a UPS store in the office), I think shipping to Texas was like $17.
I bet their main goal is to drain the used market, which will result in more new sales. Apple doesnt exactly believe in supporting the used market, as everyone should be well aware of by now!
