When I bought my 2019 Mac Pro in January Apple gave me $1700 for my 2013 Mac Pro...considering I’d had it for 6 years, no matter how you swing it, that’s a damn good offer. They’re not selling particularly well on eBay, and especially not at $1700. Combined with the student discount I bought the new computer with $3k off the config, which came close to the original 2013 price tag of the trash can I sold them.

Mileage definitely varies across Mac’s, but I can’t imagine their offers aren’t close enough to offset the inconvenience of eBay seller fees and shipping...?

At least for those who want to do an Apple trade, they won't have to deal with Phobio. For my trades, I like CashForYourMac.com for the great quotes and customer service.

They will run a diagnostic (you know, like you can do yourself at power on) they will know everything passes, or doesn’t. Probably won’t care about battery, because they will have to replace it anyway. They are trained to spot blemishes, cracks, dirt. All in probably 10 minutes max

That’s a good point. And the values won’t be super high anyway which accounts for anything faulty slipping through the cracks.

So... well paid Apple employees have to inspect the machine, clean it, wrap it, and put it in a box along with new accessories. It probably takes about an hour of the worker's time. Now they need to list it and add it to their inventory and wait for a buyer. They probably offer free shipping and free 14 days return on it as well. All of that should at lease cost them $300. Add some profit and there's your offer for your old devices. I still have a 2015 Macbook Pro that I don't use anymore because I'm too lazy. I may use this service and walk into the Apple store for a gift card when I visit a shopping mall.

it‘s a joke. Before mobile devices were unlocked and were still on two year contracts, many of us used to sell our iPhones unlocked via jailbreaking methods on eBay for $400-$600 every year which allowed us to trade up without having to be on a contract. That changed everything and iPhones and most mobile devices are well over $600 out of pocket now.

We’ve essentially traded value for convenience as now most goods are valued less even if you sell them on your own due to the trade in values set by major corporations and the plethora of selling apps.

That's not been my experience at all. I buy the new iPhone every year and net enough from my old one that the upgrade only costs a few hundred dollars. Every December there's a gift card promo at Sam's Club and the cost looks like this:

$1249 (new iPhone 11 Pro Max 256GB)
- $400 gift card
- $725 (sale of last year's iPhone on Swappa)
= $124 plus a few fees

I'd say it averages about $200/year for me to always have the latest iPhone. Not a big deal.

Apple gives me $1010 for my laptop and I’m about to sell it to them. Can I really get much more than that in a private sale? Doesn’t seem like it (MBP 2018 low-end base model).

I would stick with these three:

Swappa with your phone listed competitively will almost guarantee a fast convenient sell and net you way more than these trade in offers.

eBay will has the potential to get the best value of your device if you can manage shipping / listing etc.

Macofalltrades although I haven’t used it seems to usually offer the best rates against competitors, for a trade in

Wondering when will the apple store in my neighborhood going to reopen... I think it got looted last week.

More like 50% less.
Looks like that but just like a car nothing stopping you from selling it privately. Apple isn’t going to start selling several year old used Macs so they are going to be refurbishing and wholesaling them out to bargain sites.

Ya. Less trade in value for the convenience of one stop shopping at an Apple Store. That’s the caveat.

I use the in store credit here and there for my iPhones or Apple Watches since I’m not too worried about squeezing every single dollar of value out of them. Not that I don’t like a better deal, but not having to deal with a third party online is worth a few bucks lost for me.

I have a 2015 iMac with an i5, 16GB RAM, and M359X GPU boxed up. I wonder how much Apple would give me for it. 🤔

They wanted to take my details and wait in the queue to give them an obviously broken MacBook Pro for recycling, so I just left it in the queue and walked away. :D

Of course nothing is stopping you from selling privately, that's what the 50% less is in comparison to.
