That's wild. But yeah, the M1 kicks ass. We should get an M4 next year, so I guess there's room for a 600$ MacBook. I'm thinking 256GB/8GB with 12" display. And if you want more power either get an entry level MBA or iPadPro which should come with an M3 or M4.

Not really buying this one. I think Apples version of the Chromebook as the iPad.
Hardly, Apple will not put IPad OS in a MacBook. It will have MacOS and therefore have and be able to do everything that an iPad cannot.
I don't understand you people who always think an iPad can replace a MacBook. As long as IPadOS remains so limited, it will never be able to do that!

Apple and ‘cheap’! And Chromebook’s are aggressively priced!

I‘ll believe it when I see it too. If they are real I bet they have a ton of conditions attached, like only purchased through schools or colleges etc, or prove you are a student in order to purchase. No access for the masses outside education.

I never said an iPad could replace a MacBook. I said Apple probably thinks an iPad can replace a Chromebook. A Chromebook does not use a full-fledged computer operating system after all either.

But again, I was talking about what I think Apple thinks. Not what I think. And we all know Apple thinks an iPad can replace a Mac. They regularly say so in interviews and ad campaigns.

I hope this rumor is true because this is exactly what I was hoping for.

Apple has so much untapped potential in the education sector, and I'm sorry to Apple but the iPad just isn't enough beyond basic educational and maybe some basic engineering apps.

Students and teachers need a full-fledged operating system. And with Apple Silicon, there can genuinely be a very solid budget option. Just slap an M1 chip on there and you're golden.

I wonder how low they can realistically price it though.

If I had to guess a spec, basically the 13" MacBook Pro with the Touch Bar removed, M2 chip, 128/8GB starting configuration, rebranded as the 13" MacBook for $799. Might add MagSafe as a bonus if you're lucky... I think it would get the M2 chip so they can end production of the M1 once the iPad Air also goes M2.

The 13" Pro possibly gets replaced by a low spec 14" with the standard M3 chip, standard LCD display, fewer ports, and lower starting configuration.

What's more interesting is "MacBook Series" - which would suggest a whole line of computers?
