Bet it STILL won't have a shared family calendar/contacts option.

I'm sure it will still bring Firefox to its' knees on Windows too...

Anyone remember what a EPIC FAIL the last major update was like from .Mac? :D

I saw this and could not resist.

They offer a number of free applications including Safari, QuickTime, and iTunes.

Almost nobody would use these things if they weren't free. Who pays for web browsers or software video and music players these days? Opera, the only major paid-for browser, has a 2% market share. Safari can only manage 5% and they're giving it away.

If you have iTunes, you can usually get a couple of free songs every week, plus one music video. They offer some TV show episodes for free every week (these are constantly changing).

Which I am sure they have discovered is a good way to keep people coming back to iTunes and spending money.

I don't expect Apple to be driven by anything other than profit - I'm just surprised they haven't come to the conclusion that offering a free or cheap remote wipe feature (in particular) and the find my iphone feature would be a big selling point, for enterprise users in particular. I can't imagine it costs that much to run - and even if it wasn't free, I'd give consideration to spending £10/year on it.

Their loss.

Grab some popcorn for the server meltdown if they announce free MobileMe tomorrow or next week. If they were going to do it, it would make a ton of sense for them to do it then, right before a ton of people get their iPhone 4s.

i would instantly change my e-mail from hotmail to a mobileme account, as is I do pay the $20 annually to microsoft for the premier acct so sync to my iphone and outlook. I would think the acct would have to sync to outlook for many to adopt it.

the ability to sync is what I need/want. It's not worth a $100 to me, but certainly $20 for the e-mail and contact sync'ing with the various devices.

perhaps a tiered system......pay for what you want. a'la carte

What about a free Gmail account? You can have all the data syncing you desire without any cost at all.

I have both. Several Gmail accounts and a MobileMe account. All of them serve their purpose perfectly for me.

That was my first reaction!

How would it work... Call your lost phone, ask whoever answers to run the Find my Phone app and describe what's shown.. :p

Presumably it'll work in the other direction too, finding your lost iPad from your iPhone/iTouch.
I'm sure you'd still be able to use the website too. This is more for, say, me to find my wife's phone when we're driving home from dinner and she realizes she doesn't have her phone on her. We can instantly check and see if it was left and the restaurant, fell under the seat, etc. The current Find My iPhone web page doesn't work well on mobile safari (for a long time it didn't work AT ALL).

Find my iPhone App...

Don't get me wrong, I love the ability to find my iPhone if its lost... but...if I don't have my iPhone, because...its lost...then what the h*$& good is the app on the phone I have lost??

Chris

It's for people with multiple iOS devices, which is becoming more and more common. An iPhone, iPod touch and iPad all owned by the same person.

Hopefully not.

Hopefully it will allow users to "log in" to the app with their personal MobileMe account info, so you can use ANY iDevice to find your phone.

Exactly, I don't really understand it. I mean I guess you could do it from your iPad or something? But it seems like a web interface would be easy enough to use for this rare event, and more universally available. Just kind of sad they have people working on useless apps like this when there's messed up things all over the place that have been problems for years that are not being addressed. Like the slow, unreliable iDisk, lack of decent typography in Final Cut Pro, incorrect gamma-tagging in the QuickTime h.264 encoder, poorly thought out file handling scheme for iPads, Air Disk that drops its hard drive connection periodically, and on and on.

I don't see how "find my phone" is useful on mobileme, it only states the area your phone is in which is a quite a large place.. and it isn't very specific so I doubt I can find it if I did lose it but I guess its better having an idea than not knowing at all.

When I tested Find My iPhone... It showed up exactly at my house and that's it zoomed in like all the way.

It really depends on the service where the phone happens to be and interference factors, specifically anything blocking GPS where it would have to drop back to cell tower triangulation. With GPS, it should get you within 10 meters or less, making it pretty easy to find. With tower triangulation it could be measured in miles (typically less than that, but still a much larger area).

I don't get the point of the find my iPhone application. Isn't it better to get to the next computer that then has most likely not this app installed? Then you track immediately via web? Why wait till you are home just because there is an app installed?

Why? Aren't you willing to pay for something that brings value to your life?

It would depend.

If Google gives you what you want for free, but you want Apple's version, it makes sense to wait until Apple releases it for free.
It also makes sense to compromise, and pony up the money anyway and get Apple's version.
It also makes sense to compromise, and decide to just use Google's services.

Intelligent post of the day.

Not really; as discussed above, a person could have more than one iOS devices (myself included), or use someone else's iOS device.

It might not be useful 100% of the time, but it definitely does have it's uses.

I agree, however, to the implications of your poor attempt to be witty - why did Apple waste resources developing this, when they should be spending it on universalizing the iDisk and Gallery apps, I'll never understand.*

*comment withdrawn in it's entirety if Apple updates the iDisk and Gallery apps like so after this update.

Still waiting for them to make MobileMe a free service.

I've seen several similar comments. Do you know that Mobile Me's predecessor Mac.com was free for the first two or three years, then one year at half price, before raising to the current $99? So I doubt they'll drop it back to free as they have no problem getting $99 for it from most Mac users that I personally know.

Family-shared calendar, Find *Family* iPhone

I really want Find My iPhone to find other iPhones in a family account. I also really want shared (read/write) calendar and contacts.

It's the Apple arrogance assuming that everyone has multiple iOS devices. They probably think everyone who owns an iphone also owns a Macbook, an iPad, an iPod touch, and a Mac Mini with a 24" ACD.

iWeb to the web

What I would like to see Apple do is take iWeb to MobileMe and create something like a "SquareSpace Lite". It would be an awesome video showing somebody on their iPad creating their own webpage on MobileMe.

They may make some aspects of MobileMe free, but I would rather see them add more value and cool stuff.

If they just let us access the regular site on an iOS device the app wouldn't be necessary. Besides how many of us carry around several devices together? Wasn't the whole point of them to eliminate carrying around multiple gadgets?

Seems like a giant waste of time. Time better spent on giving us an native iPad iTunes Remote app.

I was at a concert with my brother when he dropped his iPhone. I had mine with me so, sure I could use it to find his? but then again, if they just allowed me to use the site I would have just done that.

Apple's terrible implementation of the IMAP protocol in Finder means that iDisk is far faster in 3rd party apps, like Panic's transmit. This isn't a recent phenomenon either, it's been that way for at least the last five years.

Don't you mean WebDAV?

No wonder it's slow if you are trying to use it for mounting iDisk

IMAP is a mail protocol http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMAP

What a shame you took five years to discover this. Try WebDav http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebDav :)
