3Gs will have to support iOS 6 if they keep selling it or make a lot of uninformed customers mad then again they may never know iOS 6 came out.

Not if it's pay as u go. And I personally don't buy the 3GS rumor anyway. I say it's outta here.

They still need a 3G S+.

They need to tweak the 3G S by doing:

1) Add the Apple A4. This will be a huge cost savings and bring power management of the iPad/iPad 2/iPhone 4 to the 3G S. Also this will get rid of stocking additional parts. Keep the same 3G S clock speed.

2) Provide a Verizon/Sprint option.

3) Add in the 512 MB like the iPhone 4.

All this could be added while dropping the price and maintaining margins.

One thing I'm wondering is if it's possible one of the two major carrier companies (Verizon & ATT) will offer some sort of incentive to draw people who want to adopt the new version iphone to them.

Is it possible one of the two may open up the 'doors', so to speak, and offer unlimited data for a limited time to entice would-be customers to their side?

We know that both companies will be selling the product probably on the same day. I can't imagine apple giving the edge to either of them because playing the carrier card isn't something they've been doing. They've been hocking the fact that their product works on multiple carriers.

Just wondering... I'm holding out until I see further information regarding this. I'm currently with tmobile but have been waiting on the new iphone release to make the switch after my contract ran out a couple months ago.

Don't know if this has been said but if it is a 3gs and not native t-mobile and att bare minimum its pointless. Ill stay with my crappy tracfone phone before I pay att outlandish prepaid cost just to say i have an iphone.

I'd have thought there would be some sort of antenna redesign in the next iPhone, even if it is called the iPhone 4S. Can't imagine they'd want to continue using that flawed design.

There was rumours of them moving the antennas around the band not that long ago though, so maybe the same design but the antenna breaks moved around.

I'm not sure that moving the antenna "break points" around does much. I shift my grip numerous times during a long conversation and have pretty much avoided covering them by now.

3GS without contract won't be successful for USD350. There are much better phones for the same price. Motorola Defy and Samsung Galaxy S are 2 of them.

Exactly. No one will buy it at that price unless it begins to work for virgin mobile or boost.

Nah...

1. BGR is always overstating the credibility of their rumor sources.

2. Apple didn't take extra time on the next iPhone to do a simple bump. Not saying the outer design will change -- Apple might keep that -- but the innards will be all new.

Personally, I'm mainly hoping for a bigger screen and fantastic cell reception.

this rumor is incorrect ! apple not gonna to call the new iphone 'iphone 4S' (its sounds funny too) the next iphone will be 5 only.
Naming convention aside, I wouldn't be surprised if the next iPhone has essentially the same outward design. So long as they aren't adding any features that would require a new form factor, I consider this to be a good move. The current design is iconic. It is still among the best looking phones on the market. This would also allow accessorizes and cases to last a bit longer. On the down side this would mean certain changes would not be in this iteration (dedicated shutter button, second flash, moving the camera, larger screen...).

Keep in mind that the biggest generational leap in the iPhone history was the 3G -> 3Gs. This jump was done in the same shell.

Can we PLEASE stop calling it the 4S.

I think the 3GS rumor is likely correct as Apple made a point of iOS 5 working on the 3GS

However, given how much a mixed bag iOS 4 is on the 3GS I wonder how well iOS 5 will run?

I must be in the minority. I hear loads of people complaining about iOS 4.x on the 3GS but it has always worked perfectly for me on mine since day one.

Obviously I can only speak for myself here, but my 3GS runs fine on 4.3.4. I haven't had any issues, nor do I expect any. It is a great phone and is not dead since it will have iOS 5 support.

iPhone 3GS in Canada is "FREE"

Some Canadian carriers (Bell, VirginMobile[=Bell], Telus) have the 3GS for free with a contract. The law here in Quebec is that if you break your contract you have to pay only the remaining price of the phone (divide the retail price for the number of months in the contract). My wife got one recently and she is loving it, having seen the iP4 and iPad, etc. But for the kinds of apps she needs and uses, 3Gs is great! So, the "cheap" option is there already. I assume Apple is still producing it because some of the stores we've been to said they will be receiving new shipments...(?)

If apple wants to keep it's reputation as supporting it's customers (for a reasonable phone lifetime- Essentially the life of contract), it will need to support at least one add'l major iteration of software beyond purchase date.
You are correct but since the 3GS might be sold without contract, the duration of the contract is essentially zero.
Exactly. No one will buy it at that price unless it begins to work for virgin mobile or boost.
In most countries (likely 80+% of iPhone sales), you can get prepaid (or month-by-month) data contracts for your iPhone.
