I wonder if Apple is spreading all these rumours?

They are so contradictory, basically there is no information.

I really hope this is true. My Hero is getting VERY long in the tooth, and although it's survived two full submersions from our kid, I'm not confident it will make it much longer. The speaker is flakey; the touch screen is suspect; and the OS is laggy. All these are reasons why I'm really wanting something new, and I'm waiting for the next iPhone to surface....

I would love it if the 3GS was free with contract.

I want to know what the unsubsidized iPhone 4 price would be after the iPhone 5, however. Would be nice to have a "weekend phone" as a backup and just pop the SIM in there. Can't do that between iPhone 4 and 3GS cuz of that stupid micro SIM that no one else but Apple uses.

Iphone 4S? Epic fail on Apple's part (and yes, I know they will sell millions). 15 months to put a new CPU in an iphone. Not impressed.

I see what you mean but think of it from a marketing perspective. It isn't taking them this long to update it, the release schedule is planned carefully.

You would have to be nuts to buy a 3GS!

Not as nuts as you'd have to be to buy an iPhone 4S if they don't improve the build quality, fix the antenna issues (ie: change the design entirely), and do something other than slap a slightly faster processor on the inside.

No front facing camera no sale

even if it is cheap and dirt and ridiculous quality , we need front facing camera for face time.

They need to tweak the 3G S by doing:

1) Add the Apple A4. This will be a huge cost savings and bring power management of the iPad/iPad 2/iPhone 4 to the 3G S. Also this will get rid of stocking additional parts. Keep the same 3G S clock speed.

2) Provide a Verizon/Sprint option.

3) Add in the 512 MB like the iPhone 4.

All this could be added while dropping the price and maintaining margins.

i think the rumor is plain wrong ...

I'm gonna go with that one too. First they say the new phone is gonna be a 'complete redesign' and now this. So they have been on both sides of the spectrum. Since they covered it all, when the new phone is released, BGR can say they were correct (just nevermind the other false BS they spewed).

Are you serious?launching a new phone with the design of the 2/3 year old iPhone 3GS?
they should have the 3GS at 350,4 16GB at 500 and 4 32GB at 600,then new release it should look like this 4 16GB 350,5 32GB 500 and 5 64GB at 600.

I live in Canada. My wife wants an iPhone. (I've upgraded every year since to original). But the $50/month for a basic voice/data plan is what is stopping her as opposed to the upfront cost (she would likely go with a contract anyway). We need cheaper monthly billings.

The 3GS is still a fine phone. It's better than the vast majority of mid-range phones folks are using, by a country mile. Perhaps they should bump the 3GS to 512MB RAM (as RAM is so cheap these days) and that would greatly extend its viability for iOS 5 and beyond. That's the only issue I ever ran in to with 3GS, 256MB RAM gets pretty limited after some time. In fact that's the only reason I went for iPhone 4, save the better camera.

What's hilarious is that iPhone 4 still runs toe-to-toe with the latest handsets out there despite being "dated" by many commentaries. If all they do with "4S" or whatever it will be is throw in a dual-core A5 and a better camera I'll be tickled as I *LOVE* the iPhone 4 physical form factor. It's great.

Always lots of doomsayers but Apple will sell the beejeebus out of whatever they release, and you know it!!!

LOL! I love it when people say "epic fail" on Apple. Heard it with every update of every product and yet they still sell like hot cakes.

I'm just curious as to why keep the 3Gs? They should just go iPhone4 and 4s. I'm guessing the 4s will be much more than just a processor update.

Epic Fail... funny!

you are so right. when you're at the top, i guess it's hard to make any 'mistakes' . Yes, they've had (supposedly) problems putting in a really powerful chip into this next phone. the A4 processor is still plenty fast. it's not always about speed that matters. I haven't heard one person with the iphone 4g complain about its speed. this isn't RIM saying it's coming out with a tablet that doesn't even have frickin' EMAIL - for which they are KNOWN FOR. Now THAT, was a major fail (and the lack of sales proves that)

yup...their stock just hit $364 per and they've ordered (apparently) up to 25 million of these new iphones and they will sell like hotcakes.

epic fail my arse :)

By "slightly faster" do you mean the A5 which has 2-3 times the CPU and 5-10 times the GPU performance ?
These are night and day performance differences.

There are quite a few people like myself who would love an iPhone but are put off by long contracts/data plans. Just last night I was contemplating buying a 2nd hand 3GS.

Yes it maybe 2 years old but it's more thank adequate for most peoples uses. I just want something Apple based that I could use on the go on pre-pay/pay as you go and that is cheap/doesn't require huge month outlays.

I can see them keeping the 3GS and severely cut the price. I think the price points in the story are wrong though. It wouldn't surprise me if they slashed the 3GS price way down to something like <$300

Of all of the rumors floating around right now, I'm most inclined to believe this one. It makes sense that there will be a newer iPhone model, but I don't see a complete redesign taking place just yet.

Ok seriously: why would Apple sell the iPhone 4 alongside an iPhone 4S?

For the same reason they sold the iPhone 2 next to the 3, and the 3 next to the 3GS, and the 3GS next to the 4. Not everyone wants to spend $200+ on a phone but still want something somewhat technologically relevant.

...they should bump the 3GS to 512MB RAM (as RAM is so cheap these days)..

Not 'quite' so easy. This is not the same as the RAM in your PC. The A4 is an SOC design. The RAM is physically a part of the same package on the logic board. As a result, increases in RAM amount to lower A4 yields.
Still, I agree. Adding more RAM is a smart place for Apple to allocate production costs.

Rumors of Apple releasing a low-cost iPhone carrying an unsubsidized price in the range of $350 have been circulating in recent weeks, with one analyst claiming that Apple will in fact be using the iPhone 3GS to fill that role, slashing its price to free on-contract and $399 without contract. The 8 GB iPhone 3GS currently retails for $449 unsubsidized.

To anyone thinking a free 3GS on contract wouldn't be a big seller just because it's an old model...

I would love it if the 3GS was free with contract.

More often then not, the 3GS is for free on contract NOW.

I've been tempted to get one for that reason, but then realize that it's already a 2 year old phone and will be 4 years old and completely outdated by the time the contract is up.

Wasn't there a rumor late last year that Apple had already begun work on a new handset? I doubt they're going to release an "iPhone 4S", especially after all the heat they got over the iPhone 4. With iOS 5, there's going to be an iPhone 5.

Did anyone see this on the weekend? http://www.gizmocrunch.com/apple/7609-iphone-5-3gs-4 AT&T started selling refurbished 8GB 3Gs' for NINE DOLLARS with a two year contract. Yeah, it's quite possible that the 3Gs may be headed for pre-paid, but the only problem I see with it is where's the Verizon model?

There is no Verizon model.... never was. I highly doubt Apple is making this phone anymore these are refurbished or over stock.

I am waiting for 1GB & 64GB

I am waiting for the next revision of the iPhone. I have a 3Gs and just completed the contract. I could get a iPhone 4 now but hopefully the wait will be worth it. It should be if there are any improvements in storage or RAM. Ideally for me the 5 (or 4s) will have 1GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. I know a lot of people don't care about specs but I do. I need enough RAM to have different Safari pages or tabs without reloading every time I switch between them. Also 32GB barely holds enough Apps, movies and music for me. Some of the game Apps are getting pretty big. If I can't have both 1GB and 64 GB I think I will be happy with just at least one of those upgrades. If neither is introduced I will be sorry I waited. 512MB and 32GB just doesn't cut it any more.

If this turns out to be true, it will mean there would be an iPhone 4S in addition to the prepaid iPhone 3GS available within the next month to two. Let's do one better, though. In addition to that news, we are told that Apple will continue to sell the current iPhone 4 as well, finally giving the company a full range of devices in the lower, mid, and high-end price segments.

Really?! I think Apple will have a problem differentiating the iPhone 4 and 4s as mid and high end.

Personally, I think this is all just FUD - maybe even spread from Apple.

Essentially, Apple are doing their best to avoid a repeat of last years shenanigans when Gizmodo gave us all an early preview of iPhone 4. Apple have clamped down, and now people are just taking wild guesses about what will be released and when based on no info at all.

I don't believe we'll have waited almost 18 months just to get an 's' on the current device. But I guess we'll all see soon enough ;)

RTP.
