But the 3GS is more than two years old, even people interested in the low price will want something newer than that.

There is no way after a 15 month delay that apple would only upgrade to an A5 processor and an 8 megapixel camera for a 4S. I believe that they will keep a similar design that will be thinner and perhaps put aluminum on the back, same screen size, A5 and 8 megapixel camera.
NO go without a bigger screen and LTE... Until then I guess ill hold out for the Samsung Galaxy SII.

iOS 5 runs just fine on the 3GS. Virtually every new feature in iOS 5 runs just fine on the 3GS. In fact a lot of stuff runs fastereg Safari is noticeably faster. So that's the equivalent of the 3GS on iOS5, let alone any software updates beyond that.
I don't think the 'name' of the next iPhone will be 'iPhone 4s'. I think the 3Gs was just named that to reset the numbering:
1st iphone - iPhone 1
iPhone 3G - iPhone 2
iPhone 3Gs - iPhone 3
iPhone 4 - iPhone 4
iPhone 5 - iPhone 5
...
If I had to guess, I think apple's plan was to keep the similar design as iPhone 4 for the next one but the antenna-gate changed the road map. Also was to keep the June/July timeline. iPhone 5 will be an updated design, that is why it is late.
There will be no iPhone 4S.
Apple for marketing reasons called the seconded generation iPhone the iPhone 3G because the first one didn't have it and Apple wanted to make a big thing the fact that the new phone had 3g.
Apple then had to come up with a different name for the third generation iPhone because the iPhone 3 would have been confusing, so they stuck an S on the end and said it stands for speed.
The forth generation is the iPhone 4 and the fifth generation will be the iphone 5. Apple likes to keep it simple unlike others i.e. Nokia 6303i classic.
I'm still using an archaic 3G. Not 3GS, a regular 3G.
After iOS4 came out, it became literally unusable. Even after they put out that iOS 4.1 or whatever it was that was supposed to be a bandaid for the 3G users, it's still garbage. Camera takes 15 seconds to open, typing has massive delays, everything is like that. It's a *terrible* user experience at this point and I can't wait to throw it through a wall when the new iPhone comes out.
This is not gonna happen...
There will be three phones.
Iphone 5...with screen to edge display...and 4 inches $199 with 32GB
Iphone 4 discounted to $Free with 16gb
Iphone 5 nano... priced at $99 16gb
The 3GS is dead...
I predict-
3GS will be free on contract.
4 will be middle of the road phone.
5 will be new/high end phone.
The 5 may look like the 4, and hopefully use the same cases (unless screen is edge-to-edge), but I can't imagine they would have a new phone that looks identical to the 4. I know they did that with the 3GS, but come on, we are into the 4th year already.
Not necessary - if the carrier lock software is on a non-flashable chip, then it can't be changed unless you remove and replace teh chip. So, except for someone with surface mount soldering skills and equipment, VZW's statement could be true.
More to their point, is that even if you could unlock it you couldn't use it on another US carrier; which is what most VZW subscribers would expect if VZW unlocked their phone.
I agree, the competition is too strong to be releasing the same phone with upgrades that the consumer can't visibly see.
you are so right. when you're at the top, i guess it's hard to make any 'mistakes' . Yes, they've had (supposedly) problems putting in a really powerful chip into this next phone. the A4 processor is still plenty fast. it's not always about speed that matters. I haven't heard one person with the iphone 4g complain about its speed. this isn't RIM saying it's coming out with a tablet that doesn't even have frickin' EMAIL - for which they are KNOWN FOR. Now THAT, was a major fail (and the lack of sales proves that)
yup...their stock just hit $364 per and they've ordered (apparently) up to 25 million of these new iphones and they will sell like hotcakes.
epic fail my arse![]()
How much does it cost to build a 3GS?
Can't be more than $250, if that.
Still rockin' a 3Gs and it works fine with iOS4. If they do keep selling the 3Gs that's good news. They must feel that iOS 5 works well enough on it to continue to support it. As long as it continues to work, I'm holding off on a new iPhone until it hits the next gen networks.
The Iphone 4 costs $171.35 to build. So the 3GS is far less.

Who cares if they make a low res iPhone. The 3Gs provides a very good user experience at a far lower price.
On the other hand, I agree that low-res Apps need to die.![]()
i wish they would get back to the curved back, the 4 hurts my fingers after chatting on it for a while and its also easier to drop. curved back + bigger screen and im sold ... well in january that is
