it is another way to keep you locked into the eco system after having all of your passwords saved to their new password program....
If it's cross-platform like many are hoping for, then you won't be locked into their ecosystem. That's the thing. If it's NOT cross-platform, then I agree... it likely will be free for that reason. We'll see in a few days.

It is great that this will be compatible with Windows, but if Linux is not supported then I will continue using 1Password as I use Windows only if I have to. By choice I use a Mac or Linux on a PC.

Yes thru the passwords UI on macOS and iOS.

Wherever it’s been suggested to use Authy or Google authenticator I’ve used the apple authenticator without problems.

Also on sites where authenticator 2FA is not available, Apple’s integrating PIN by email (and doing it via an HME address singularity assigned to one site) has allowed me to move most PIN receipt off PIN via SMS, so in preferential order:
- authenticator
- PIN via email to HME
- PIN via SMS
- no 2FA

I was using Sign in with Apple but so few sites offered it and I didn’t really like the additional balkanization it caused, so I reverted those accounts to 2FA password once Apple introduced their authenticator.

Im still not using passkeys as I want to see how it develops. I expect that it’s safer and easier to use but don’t think I have any immediate need to move from the current setup.
Interesting. How do I access this? I have never seen it.
Everyone's reacting like this will be a free value-added service Apple will be providing, but I'm not reading anything that says it will be.
Most likely because the article says it’s an app version of functionality already offered. There is no chance (IMO) that Apple’s password manager functionality becomes entirely subscription based. If this is a standalone app in addition to Keychain then I can see it, but two overlapping services doesn’t seem like Apple.

I certainly hope it will be and good enough for me to replace 1Password (still using 1P7 on a one-time paid license and refuse to do a sub), but it's no secret that Apple is constantly looking for more revenue avenues. Other services like Apple Music, TV, News, etc are all subscription based, with some free content. I guarantee you that if it is cross-platform, then a sub will be required. There is simply no incentive for them to do this and make it free for the whole world outside their customer base.
This won’t be a sub. It’s not a service. It will be part of the OS.

I'm somewhat confused why people seem delighted by this. My settings app is always on the home screen of my phone/iPad and passwords isn't far from the top of the list. Now I need another separate app/icon to do exactly the same thing as it always has?!?!

Would make sense to have a separate app if it was cross-platform, but I'll eat my hat if it is. 🤷‍♂️ That was the only reason I could see a usage scenario of things like 1Password in the first place, but never bothered.

I'm similarly still not sure why I need separate Music and Podcasts apps these days to create more icons/windows and clutter.

When you've stopped shouting at clouds, you can simply long-press those apps and remove them from your Home Screen. Problem solved. But they're there because others among us actually use them.

I do use them. But it was more convenient when Music and podcasts were in the same app. So you've failed to make any useful point at all with this reply.

I'd actually be interested in using it but the only way I'd consider giving up my current password manager (Bitwarden) is if it was available for all the platforms I use daily - including third-party browser plugins and Windows. Without that, it's just another way to trap you in Apple's ecosystem.
Same!

Music and Podcasts are separate apps because they're separate things. I rarely listen to Podcasts but I use Music all the time, so I hide Podcasts but have Music prominently on my first Home Screen.

1Password has had a good run but if this works well and can import all my passwords and associated notes like serial numbers, version changes, etc, it’ll be Tschüss Tschüss 1Password. I’ve been looking for a reason to jump ship ever since they embraced the subscription model.

Is this going to be viable for those with devices outside of Apple's walled garden? I've been using the free version of Bitwarden for a few years now and have found it to be really excellent all around.

And you know this, how?
Because the feature is already deeply embedded into the OS and doing what you suggested would risk breaking not only that part of the OS, but other parts of the OS, thus potentially rendering the OS unusable. What you suggested is illogical on multiple levels.

Name me one single time Apple has done something like what you are suggesting with the OS.

Some are better than others. LastPass had multiple breaches and rubbed salt into the wound by hiding it for a while. 1Password has more trust because it has a stronger history and is located in multiple countries for added security — both from a hacking perspective and, I believe, from how much it can be forced to do things by governments.

Good point... I hadn't even thought about governments potentially requiring password to be handed over.

There is already a chrome plug in for iCloud Keychain.
But will it work with this new Password app? I also forgot about that plugin, thanks for reminding me. I honestly don't trust it, but it does look to be officially from Apple themselves, right?

Well, I hope they update it or make a new one that works very well with other browsers for this new Password app.

Are you saying that Keychain stores TouchID?
If you want to have Touch ID unlock 1Password, then 1Password needs to store your 1Password key in Keychain. When you unlock your 1Password vault with Touch ID, the 1Password software gets the 1Password key from Keychain and uses that to unlock your vault.

At least this is the way it worked a couple of years ago when I fell victim to the trojan.

I re-read the article and noticed that it did say it will work with Windows PCs. So why don't you tell me how Apple plans to embed the feature into Windows, and also tell me when Apple has released a feature wholly free to use for Microsoft's customers?

EDIT: Meanwhile, allow me to point out that the article headline says “Standalone App”. Also allow me to point out that iCloud, Music, and other “embedded” features of macOS and iOS have subscription tiers.

That’s pretty concerning. Maybe I should turn off the face and Touch ID for 1P on my devices

Erm, iTunes?

There is an extension for chrome and it’s on Mac and pc
Oh wow. I had no idea that existed.

It seems so not like Apple it didn’t even occur to me as a possibility. Surprised I never heard of it before either but that does make iCloud passwords much more comparable to the paid alternatives either than a few missed organizational possibilities.

It also further decreases the likelihood of the upcoming app being a subscription

That’s not how it works. I’ll see if I can find the article I read about it, but it’s been ages when I saw it.

It works like a yes or no.
Does the finger print or face match - > yes -> then unlock.

My keychain isn’t even on, and I nothing stored in it. I also have apps that just use face if to secure them, but they don’t have a password/passcode to unlock them.
