Apple will ship three new iPad Pro models around Spring 2017, including 7.9-inch, 10.1-inch, and 12.9-inch models, according to Japanese blog Mac Otakara.

The report, citing "reliable sources," said the 12.9-inch model will feature a True Tone display like its current 9.7-inch counterpart, using advanced four-channel ambient light sensors to automatically adapt the color and intensity of the display to match the light in the surrounding environment.

The 12.9-inch iPad Pro is also said to gain the 9.7-inch model's same 12-megapixel rear-facing iSight camera and True Tone flash.

The smaller 7.9-inch model, which will succeed the iPad mini 4, will likewise include a Smart Connector, True Tone display, four speakers, and a 12-megapixel rear-facing iSight camera with True Tone flash, as Apple works to standardize features across its tablet lineup, according to the report.

All three new iPad Pro models will reportedly gain quad microphones, compared to the current dual setup, and retain 3.5mm headphone jacks.

Today's report mostly corroborates KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who in August said Apple is planning to release three new iPads in 2017. However, his research note claimed the trio of models would include a 12.9-inch iPad Pro 2, 10.5-inch iPad Pro, and a low-cost 9.7-inch iPad.

Kuo made no mention of a refreshed 7.9-inch model. It has been speculated the iPad mini could be nearing the end of its line due to Apple's focus on its larger tablet lineup, and the belief that recent 5.5-inch iPhone "Plus" models have helped lessen demand for Apple's smallest tablet, but today's report suggests otherwise.

Mac Otakara does not have a perfect track record with Apple rumors, but its sources have proven accurate on multiple occasions in the past. The blog was the first to report about Apple's controversial plans to remove the 3.5mm headphone jack and add new Black and Jet Black colors on iPhone 7 models.

The website also accurately leaked the iPhone 7's naming scheme, pressure-sensitive Home button, and larger earpiece cutout. It also said the new models would ship with a Lightning-to-3.5mm audio adapter, although 3.5mm EarPods proved wrong, and quashed rumors about the inclusion of a Smart Connector.

On the flip side, the timing proved to be wrong on its report claiming new MacBook Air models with USB-C ports would be unveiled by the end of June. The latest word is a MacBook Air refresh will occur "as early as October."

Glad for the mini, though increasing the price in a time when demand is less doesn't seem like the right strategy.

If they're all "Pro" models, then shouldn't they just be called "iPad"? Pro is supposed to distinguish the model over a lesser model of the same generation.

Nice to see an iPad 'mini pro' but I can't help but worry about apple's increasingly fragmented product line. Not that I want to be a proponent of the 'Jobs would be turning in his grave' attitude, but his vision of a more streamlined, simplified range of products is starting to become lost :(

Is there some error with the article? It states 3 models, yet alternates between the 10:1" and 12.9" models.

Which is which now? It makes sense to standardise between 7.9, 9.7 and 12.9" models. Else, 10.1" is too close to 9.7" to make much of a difference where tablets are concerned.

It makes sense to add 7.9'' to the Pro lineup since many people prefer the Mini size, while I don't understand why they'd sell a 10.1'' and continue to sell the 9.7'' they're too close

This has become an huge farce. The iPads sales right now are equal to the 2011 ones when only the iPad 2 was sold. Just drop the "Pro" moniker, keep 3 models, one for each form factor, and charge down-to-earth prices. Also USB-C with host functionality.

So many iPads. Would it be more difficult to answer a simple question: "Which one should I get?" I hope not.

    I have to disagree.

A streamlined product line made sense when Apple had limited resources and couldn't afford to engage on too many fronts. So it was better off focusing all its resources on making one great product than 2 mediocre ones.

Apple today is a lot richer, has a lot more resources at its disposal, and serves a way wider clientele. I don't think Apple can cater to so diverse a customer base with just 1 or 2 iPad variants.

3 variants of iPhones and iPads sound about right.

And we can't even get a MacBook Pro update!

The future is iPads people. It's not looking good for Macs.

Fragmented? The end result will be three harmonized models, differentiated by screen size.

BTW, it was Jobs who introduced the concept at Apple of Good, Better, Best - establishing three base price points for different models within the same family (though performance was often the differentiator).

Well, Tim Cook did call the iPad Pro the future of mobile computing.

You can't accuse Apple of not putting their money where their mouth is.

Purchased iPad Mini 4 and iPad Pro (1st Gen), those will be my last iPad's unless they do some serious changing to the OS. I can do everything and more on my phone these days, sure can't use Apple Pencil but that's not exactly amazing anyway. They really dropped the ball on the whole iPad line and it's really showing the last couple years. Change the OS to match that of a bigger screen, add usb-c support and a few more goodies to make this a notebook/laptop replacement.. otherwise it's lost it's place in the market.

This whole Pro thing is just a marketing ploy to make more money, shifting everything towards the Pro name. It can't all be Pro but they certainly make that out in the price!
