So, Phil said "when you have a vision of a wireless future, you want to get there as soon as you can" but will ship iPads with a headphone jack? o_O

It seems like the iPhone 7 was just a test phone to see how the reactions were towards no headphone jack. Now they re-introduce the headphone jack in the iPads? LOL

Nice, I have an old mini so perhaps I'll jump on this next year, though my iPad usage has plummeted

it was better off focusing all its resources on making one great product than 2 mediocre ones
So what exactly about today makes it better for Apple to release multiple mediocre products instead of one great product? The market is more diverse so let's serve them all poorly instead of picking one audience to serve well? I guess you can take in more total profit that way, but I feel like the long term cost to the Apple brand will be too high. I can't even whole-heartedly recommend Apple to friends and family any more, and even if I tried, it's really difficult to explain which product is right and which to stay away from.

This has become an huge farce. The iPads sales right now are equal to the 2011 ones when only the iPad 2 was sold. Just drop the "Pro" moniker, keep 3 models, one for each form factor, and charge down-to-earth prices. Also USB-C with host functionality.

Agreed and also feel they should all be released at or around the same time.

I can see the iPad taking lineup cues from the MacBook where more powerful Pencil enabled iPad Pros would be slated for work while lower powered iPads would be for general use. The Pro line would suit the larger and medium screen where the smaller screen of an iPad Mini does not at all seem suited to pro use.

I'd have the lineup look like this:

iPad Pro (A10x, True tone display, Pencil)
12.9" (128GB, 256GB)
9.7" (128GB, 256GB)

iPad (A10)
9.7" (64GB, 128GB)
7.9" (64GB, 128GB)

They already have 67 different variations of the iPad. Do they really need to add yet more? This is starting to look a little like the Late 90's Apple phase where they had far far far too many products - and nearly killed the company.

And as others have pointed out, if its going to be improved to the standard of the other two Pro iPads, the 'Pro' element is kind of redundant.

So the main thing you are objecting to is the naming, otherwise having three sizes with similar specs is pretty much what you want?

Adding "Pro" to the name does not make much difference for people who actually need to create content. iOS simply cannot seal the deal and the limited solutions it offers are at best lame versions of the apps available on OS X and Windows. The crippled, idiotic file system iOS forces on users is another insult. Apple is just blowing smoke with this "pro" marketing nonsense while their customer base of actual professional users loses patience and moves to a different platform.

I will never buy an iPad without a real operating system. iOS works great on my 6S Plus, which is essentially a small tablet. iOS just won't suffice for something as expensive as an iPad.

Fragmented? The end result will be three harmonized models, differentiated by screen size.

Within the supposed "Pro" line, that would be true. But the existence of a "Pro" series implies the existence of another ("consumer") series as well. So that suggests more than 3 models - maybe 6.

There's no need for a Pro designation (or Air) in the iPad lineup anymore. Just offer 3 standard sizes and be done with it.

i guess i won't get a new iPad this Christmas, I will wait until the spring to update my iPad Air (1), typical Apple, selling old devices during the holiday season, then cash in on the new ones early the following year :D (that business model works for them though $$$)

My iPad Mini has basically become a Reader's Digest. Other than bathroom time, occasionally surfing before bed or using it as a second screen to stream a second (or third) game during football season, it provides little value.

In fairness, my wife does use hers for 90% of the things she used to use a laptop for. So everyone is different.

If they're all "Pro" models, then shouldn't they just be called "iPad"? Pro is supposed to distinguish the model over a lesser model of the same generation.

Not necessarily. It's a brand new generation of iPad. Even their entry model will have the relative power of the larger models and that translates into the product names.

Microsoft has the Surface or the Surface Pro. Apple is saying they offer great performance in three sizes.

Well if that is all they are adding to my big Pro is a camera, and a 'true tone' display then I am glad that I bought when I did and did not wait for the second version. The only thing that would make me salty is if they got a new apple pencil that does more than ours, like have an eraser or something.
Likely most of the improvements are going to come in the iPad software, and that is why the hardware upgrades are so lackluster.
