As if the United States hasn't been charged tariffs…? It is a negotiation.

Half the regime has explicitly said “this is not a negotiation.” Trump can’t speak in coherent sentences but has repeatedly indicated it isn’t about other countries’ tariffs (or at least not only about them).

Regardless, the US generally doesn’t charge tariffs because we have a lot of money and buy a lot of things. Americans vastly prefer access to cheap and plentiful goods to having lots of sweatshop jobs. This really isn’t hard.

It’s likely the foreign goods with the tariff are still cheaper than American aluminum.

That’s the problem with these tariffs. They hike prices but not enough to make American goods worth it.

And that’s assuming the US even has capacity to produce more goods, which it largely does not. And increasing capacity could take years if not decades.

If companies like Apple manufactured all their devices (and their components) in the US they'd only be able to sell to the US market (not competitive against alternatives in foreign markets). And they'd only have the US market if you limited (tariffs, etc.) sale of any foriegn competitors in the US. Given these, the US made devices would sell in the US though at a higher price than now. This also might not add many jobs given that these new factories would only staff enough to sell to a US market and a smaller US market than now (due to higher sales price). We need logic, not just patriotic feelings without logic.

China can just make up half a trillion in trade with the world's largest economy by selling more to who? Germany doesn't want half a trillion more Chinese trinkets. They have enough. Who are they going to sell to?
No they can’t but you’re missing the point. They don’t have to. They are not answerable to anyone. They can take a hit to the economy, lose jobs, etc and nobody could do a thing. Trump is in his final term so he’s not going to face the electorate again but his supporters in Congress will still have fight elections in the future. There is a big difference.

Are you sure? They will simply sell more stuff to other countries instead. They will take a hit but they are not a democracy so the CCP can do whatever they want.
What has stopped them from selling to other countries as of now?

That is incorrect. They've said explicitly that for countries that don't retaliate, we are at a maximum tariff levels. Through negotiations, all we will see is levels come down. Nearly 70 countries have reached out to negotiate.

And this is all BS anyway because these tariffs are not really reciprocal. Vietnam had a tariff of about 4% on American goods but we are slapping 46% on their goods. That’s not a reciprocal tariff.

Well that's Trump's life policy (paraphrased here): "If someone attacks me I don't respond proportionately but rather become psychotic and do crazy things back"

Part of me has this desire of schadenfreude so the electorate suddenly gets so tired of this they throw out the incumbents during the midterms and override Trump’s veto on tariff power.
I don’t think Trump has passed any of this stuff through Congress. He’s used Executive Orders to bypass Congress on most things and invoked old laws to justify the tariffs. It’s no wonder he likes Putin so much.

Hopefully this means no Indian iPhones being sent to Australia. If that starts happening, I’ll be switching to Samsung quicker than you can say ‘public defecation’!

Apple saying they can't bring iphone production to the US because there aren't enough skilled workers is such a cop out. The real reason apple won't start manufacturing in the US is all the government regulations and unions, which is why the US needs to deregulate and become right to work.

Westerners are also "too good" for boring, repetitive assembly work.

Apple has the capability to have fully autonomous assembly lines with near-zero human involvement. I'm not sure why this hasn't happened yet.

No, you’re just making things up to fit your narrative. Trump said literally today in the Oval Office that he won’t reduce tariffs on the EU even if the EU reduces theirs to 0. Lutnick and/or Hassert said yesterday that there won’t be any negotiations. And Navarro has a piece out in FT explicitly saying “This is not a negotiation.

This all being a negotiation also makes no sense. If one buys Trump’s claim that he’s trying to bring manufacturing back to the US then there’s nothing to negotiate—the tariffs are there to force companies to produce in the US, which wouldn’t be effective if countries could just negotiate lower tariffs.

Trump is trying to protect the Florida shrimp industry by making it more expensive when you buy shrimp from Vietnam.
