“I’m tired of Apple slowing down my phones so I’m going to buy a Samsung which will not lag like crazy within a few months! Take that Apple!”

It’s insane how many casual phone users seem to think there’s only Samsung as the only other option out there, and even worse that they are notorious for slowing down over time yet you get comments like this. A flashy looking phone though so whatever, eh!

Don’t even know how to call this. This is worse than antenna gate and chip gate combined

I will tell you what this is. This is the worst day in weeks for the astroturfers. They're like an 8 year old who got something shiny under the tree a few days ago- and accidentally dropped it off a bridge.

Apple owns this. The trolls are desperate now.

Ain’t they great?

Only solves part of the problem. For years Apple have sold phones to people who thought their old phone was dying and that they needed to get a new one, when really all they needed was a battery. I think they should address that issue.
Apple wasn't throttling the phones and there weren't unexpected shutdowns but with the CPU gains Apple has been able to make lately, this was just a necessary evil if they wanted to support phones that were older than 2 or three years back.

Nowhere near the oddest thing posted in the DM comments but I take your point :D

“I prefer when my phones explode!”

My 2 cents -

Well, I am not entirely convinced that Apple is handling it the right way. Few questions that stand out -

1) Could they be defective batteries or design issue & Apple fixed using software fix ?

Understood - batteries wear out, but this question needs to be answered by Apple. I have Iphone 5, 6; My iphone 5 still operates better than iphone 6. My iPhone started seeing problem in first year itself. Could the problem specific to certain batteries or certain manufacturer ?
Could this be a design issue ? Apple made a mistake to design phone with smaller capacity battery ?

2) Is Apple planning compensate the switchers in anyway ?

Did Apple know that slowing down iPhone would increase probability of switching to newer iPhone ?
Obviously YES. Apple hasn't acknowledged or commented on this, but I am sure Apple would have data of the users who were seeing slowdowns and then switched to iPhone 7. What are these numbers ? Are these numbers substantial ? Is Apple planning to acknowledge that , say X% of users likely switched to newer iPhone 7 ? Can this data be quantified ? Yes !!

3) How much slow down was needed vs how much was done ?

This needs clear answer. on iPhone 6, when I get a call, I hear the sound first and then I see the screen illuminate.. With few seconds of gap in between. I clearly see slowdown. I never understood why (I didn't know until now). My phone is acting worse that a nokia button phones when it comes to answering the calls. I did multiple resets thinking it could be SW issue.

I have been a big Apple user for more than a decade now, but I don't entirely trust Apple anymore like how I used to.

I hope Apple takes care of this right way, not in a minimal way !!

Or when Google comes out with Pumpkin Pie with great new features and added security, but they can’t upgrade because Samsung and/or Verizon won’t let them. If they’re going to troll, at least threaten to go to a Pixel as a reasonable alternative to a phone with less restrictions.

They do new phone with 4000Mah instead 2000Mah so if the phone needs at least 80% of 2000Mah to deliver full cpu (1600Mah), then with a 4000Mah at 80% = 3200 so still twice more than required!!!

No Apple made a misstake to design phone with smaller capacity battery... Now they have to pay!!
You don’t understand how batteries work. More capacity doesn’t mean more power delivery at one time.

My Note 4 had a huge battery and shut itself down all the time. And guess what? No battery replacement, no software update, no explanation for why it shuts down, no support at all. APPLE actually made me understand why my Samsung was shutting down by talking about shut downs to protect electronics.

It should go without saying that we think sudden, unexpected shutdowns are unacceptable. We don't want any of our users to lose a call, miss taking a picture or have any other part of their iPhone experience interrupted if we can avoid it.

*drops mic*

FTFY.

Really guys, Friggen kudos to Apple for even caring enough to be transparent about their software (like seriously, DONT LIOKE IT DONT BUY IT? DERRU)?) & then even further offer an unnecessary (IMO) remedy?!

I have not read the mass response yet, but it better not be stupid.

Exactly this. A lot of internet-only electrical engineers making all sorts of claims based on their minuscule understanding - most don’t know a watt from an amp.

What annoys me about this and other things like it is that it sets the precedent that an uninformed public can develop an "outcry" over anything get a result out of Apple. Real shame. The public didn't deserve this level of compromise from Apple. Intelligent CPU management of a device powered by lithium-ion battery is expected and appropriate, and really no one's business besides the engineers.

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

do you have proof other OEMs permanently clock down their products?

Strawman argument. Won’t even bother to respond.

Oh but here’s s lovely anecdote that just happened yesterday. I was out and this couple with their kid handed me their phone to take a photo of them. It was a Samsung S5 or the S6, not sure which. So the camera app itself took a few seconds to launch. Then finally, the time between when hitting the shutter button and the actual picture being taken was excruciatingly long. Not exaggerating when I say it was literally between 5 to 8 seconds between when tapping the shutter and the pic actually being taken. I thought it was broken. I could’ve taken about 20 pics or more in the same period of time on a throttled iPhone 6 I’m sure.

Android fanatics are just so used to and accepting of crap performance on their older phones, throttling or not, it would never become a full-blown issue to begin with.

Amazing news and uncalled for. I imagine all the trolls will have to find something else to whine about. Apple has stepped up and addressed something that was not a big deal.
[doublepost=1514498245][/doublepost]

Android "Oh crap. Hope they don't find out how we make incompatible OS, Apps and everything else crappy"

The only reason Apple "stepped up" was because of all the bad PR they were getting.

I actually left various replies (there were many saying they would be leaving for Samsung), and instead recommended them either a Pixel or Pixel 2 because they don’t slow down over time. I’m pretty certain I wasted precious finger-typing energy though.

You’ve always been able to do a battery replacement request online and ship the phone to them (at their expense) and they’ll ship it back. Turn around time is pretty fast.
What the security? Like I can put a really long word passcode or wipe and restore when I get it back?

iOS doesn't display mobile and wifi data usage in a clear and detailed manner either. I was shocked to see how much better of a job Windows 10 Mobile does. Apple can really learn a thing or two from Microsoft these days in...UI/UX.

Yeah, I never understood why this was ommited either, ditto WiFi details. These feel like simple implementations that just never got prioritized.

I do hope iOS 12 adds some these strange omissions. Seems every major release, knocks a few of these out.

Should be $29/£29 to change the battery in an iPhone anyway, that price is far more reasonable, 79 is a ridiculous price for a battery change.

Hey but nobody was complaining when reports came out that the geek bench scores for the iPhone X blew all other phones out the water.

I honesty don’t know of any old, stock tech that operates as efficiently as it did on the day it was released.

Maybe an option would be to release a pre throttled iPhone with the same battery.

Can’t complain about a “slow” phone if it’s already “slow”.

Nothing surprises me in this age of Idiocracy anymore. Not hard to notice that, even on this forum, the level of discourse has really diminished in quality over the past few years.

Not too worried either way. This will confirm I might keep my iPhone 6s longer or give it to one of my kids and pickup the next iPhone next year.

All the people saying they are going to switch I doubt it, if they do most will come back. Want to talk about messing up my iPhone my work’s BYOD running horrible airwatch agent, airwatch browser and airwatch locker. So many problems, I got so mad about my problems I bought another line and got an android and added BYOD for that crap. It stucks to carry two phones but it’s worth it. I switched to Android twice since the first iPhone and I always came back.
