you're acknowledging the oversight so should we expect more action from Apple other than cases

You would have to be pretty spoilt to expect more than has been offered.

by compensation do you mean that if someone wants to buy the iP4 they should know that they're sacrificing signal for the other benefits?

What sacrifice? The signal on the iphone 4 is better.

Its true that you can make it worse if you try - but if you know that - why try make it worse?

If i had to choose a phone for a critical situation - i would go for the one that has a wider area, even if that means holding it differently.

if you don't understand that - maybe another forum will benefit from your wisdom?

lol dude, I've had almost the exact same experience as you, identical products as well, and I'm keeping my iphone because I believe they'll come good.
I just liked the points you were making and wanted to play devils advocate to hear more from you and continue the debate in a positive nature. I'l stop now tho. :p

I disagree with this tho, respectfully mind you ;), I honestly believe that some people hold the phone in their natural way, with good intentions, but suffer because of the location of the oversight.

I noticed that the droid x is able to upload hd video straight to YouTube.. Will the iPhone ever be able to do that???

WOW...serio??? I feel the whole, "fixes the signal strength display" is a clever way Apple will add more bars to the display while not improving any signal strength whatsoever...just my opinion :)

That's as silly as saying "Obama said CHANGE! That must mean he's going to pay for everyone's every need out of his stash!". "Fixes the signal strength display" could mean anything, for example, maybe the signal strength was supposed to go up and down like a yo-yo, but it doesn't so that's a bug... I know that's completely ridiculous, but I'm just trying to give you some perspective. :D:cool::apple:

The fix and the policy is all good for the bewildered consumer and life goes on. However, had Apple focused more on function rather than pure sex appeal, this whole antenna issue could have been avoided.

Sidebar: I can hardly wait for the next glossy desktop display. :(
Regards,

iMac = another example of form over function.

Well, at least Apple is now offering free bumpers and a chance to return the iphone 4.. So I'm happy about that. But its a little disappointing that Steve decided to go ahead with the design just so the iphone 4 looks better.

Agreed. Form follows function. IPhone 4 design failed to do this.

Apple probably planned to sell hundreds of thousands of their own cases, not millions. So getting potentially 2+ million cases from their sources and from other vendors is simply going to take some work.

That's weird. If there are so many people who claim to have absolutely flawless and perfect iPhone 4's, then it would stand to reason that they would not need a case and thus there would be no shortage. According to Apple's own numbers, they should need apporoximately 15,000 cases (.5%). The remaining 99.5% have perfect phones.

Oh goodness - are you suggesting that The Lord God Jobs is somehow playing with the numbers, and that more than one in 200 Iphone4 buyers wants the rubber band that is a band-aid for the inherent flaw in the antenna design?

Wow.

That doesn't really follow. Some people may have perfect phones and just want a case because they think it looks nifty, it makes the phone easier to grasp, cases protect against drops and offer protection from scratches, etc.

Well played.

Yeah - Kind of lost my perspective at the end - late night after long weekend your honour, previous good character etc. ;)

I disagree with this tho, respectfully mind you ;), I honestly believe that some people hold the phone in their natural way, with good intentions, but suffer because of the location of the oversight.

Yeah - its a great phone, but not perfect. Wonder what the solution will be?

Wonder what it will do to the residuals? :D

really?

At its iPhone 4 press conference today, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced the results of the company's investigation into complaints of signal problems on the new device. According to Jobs, the issue is being experienced by a very small proportion of customers but that the company wants every customer to be satisfied.

To that end, Jobs outlined three steps the company has taken:

- iOS 4.0.1 fixes the signal strength display issue by recalibrating the "bars" displayed, and all customers should apply the software update.

- Apple will provide all iPhone 4 customers who purchase their phones by September 30th a free case. Customers will be able to choose from Apple's own bumpers, as well as third-party cases sourced from other vendors. Customers who have already purchased a bumper can receive a refund. Apple's site will begin taking orders for the free cases beginning late next week, and the company will re-revaluate the case situation as it gets closer to the September deadline.

- Any customer who is still unhappy with their iPhone 4 can return it, provided it is undamaged, within 30 days of purchase with no restocking fee charged.

Jobs maintained throughout that the issue was one common to other mobile phones and according to their data, this affects a very small percentage of iPhone 4 owners.

I have a little believe in this information, but still admire this responsible case!

Most cases sold for the previous iPhones were for protection.

It stands for reason, that most of those who purchased cases were doing so for the same reason.

That doesn't really follow. Some people may have perfect phones and just want a case because they think it looks nifty, it makes the phone easier to grasp, cases protect against drops and offer protection from scratches, etc.

This too - agreed.

I have a question for you folks: has anyone tried using the iPhone in Japan, where cell tower configurations are usually more in the "lots of smaller towers at lower power" than the "few towers at higher power" that is the standard in the USA? I ask this because if Japanese iPhone 4 users don't experience the same problems as iPhone 4 users in the USA, it's also possible that the iPhone 4 was not properly tested for US cellphone tower configurations.

Apple employee told me last Sunday that this week they'll be doing refunds on the cases on the internet. I have not seen anything on Apple's site about it thus far. Has anyone gotten a refund and, if so, how?

thanks.
