I'm definitely not renewing MobileMe. Although find my iPhone has come in handy a couple of times (when looking for my iPhone around the house while it was in silent mode), it's not worth $99/year (or even half that!). Everything else it offers is done better and for less money (often for free) by others.

So what could I use for all the things in this list:

Not only useful for syncing, MM also makes clean installs a breeze.

Apple learned the value of being able to wirelessly brick a phone in a real world situation. Steve probably felt it is a security feature that customers deserve considering how easily a phone can be lost. Especially for enterprise. Good reason to buy an iPhone ads and such. He is a kind and noble leader:apple:

Going out on whim here, but could the MobileMe service be used for application data saves on iOS devices? This is the most significant use of a cloud based data sync that isn't currently available for iOS.

For what it offers, Mobile Me should be free. I stopped paying for it a year ago because I found it nearly useless. Access from countries outside USA was very often terribly slow or in maybe cases not even possible at all.

I really tried to like it but ended up going for alternative services which work much much better than :apple:'s - for free or very little money.

I currently pay for MobileMe and use all it's features.

Yet that said, I find it woefully overpriced. If not free, Apple could cut down the price by half, and still make a nice profit. At the current MSRP it leaves a bad impression and reinforces the fact that there is an Apple Tax Premium. Fanboys will deny it till their final breath, but it's very real. What a racket.

I can't believe people pay more than 65 bucks a year for this. I always just buy a copy for that price on Amazon and plug in the code. Comes out to about $5 a month.

crap if this is true, i have a one year family pack still thats unopened that i'm gonna have to sell ASAP before they release 4.2...only reason i have it is for the push contacts and calendar and all that.

Among all of the features, I am only interested in Find My Phone and Remote Wipe. I am happy with Dropbox, but if iDisk support is built into the system so that every app utilizes it automatically, that may come in handy. In any case, I rarely use Dropbox, so it does not matter all that much.

I don't see the utility of "Contact/Calendar/Safari/Notes over-the-air sync" for myself. They get synced and backed up when I am charging my phone at home, that is frequent enough for me.

MobileMe calendar syncing keeps the sanity in my household with multiple family members with multiple computers and iDevices. It's the only way my wife and I can keep up with what each other and the 3 kids are doing, and where the conflicts are.

Wow, I have just made arrangements to stop using mobileme and now it looks like they're revamping it. On top of that thanks to this post I found out I don't have to pay nearly as much for it if I do decide to keep it. I think the only thing I use it fore is calendar/contact sync.

60 day trials

Am I the only one who thinks these settings are only to count the number of 60 day free MobileMe trials you have used and then cut you off?

MM should be free.

FREE mobileme? No way, too good to be true for Apple. I just don't see it happening. $45 on ebay will get a year of service though :)

Great advantage of syncing calenders and email etc.. across devices that use mobileme which would be nice to do for free.

What i'm hoping for is that this creates a new payment plan that offers more storage space but at a cheaper $/GB (like $200 a year for at least 100GB of cloud storage)

My thoughts exactly. Everyone's misreading Apple's intentions. This finding simply indicates that Apple is planning to gun down on mobileme free 60 day abusers (those of the likes of SAD*FACED*CLOWN).

I've been using mobile me for free for the last two years via the free 60 day trials. Just can't seem to decide if I want to subscribe I guess

errrr, Enterprise has had the feature to remote wipe an iPhone for a while now.

Honestly, MM isn't really a money maker for Apple, so they probably see it as more valuable to them to just add these services to the feature list for the iPhone, and hopefully sell more iPhones because of it.

Me.com's login page has also been changed. It used to be you'd enter your MobileMe username. Now, you enter your username@me.com. It has javascript to populate the me.com, but if you use a password filler like 1password, you need to make sure @me.com is in the field.

That change definitely seems like they'll enable non-me.com apple ids.

They already do, partially, on the back end. If I try to sign in with my apple ID, which is a gmail account, it tells me that my 'account has expired' and directs me to renew it, resulting in an infinite sign-in loop. If I try to sign in, however, with an unrelated email address, it tells me the member name is invalid.

I suspect that they are currently testing apple ID sign-ins for debug users and have to manually set the expiration date on users they want to let sign in.

Now, if you assume, hypothetically, that they are going to give MM away for free, one could assume that the apple ID-based login is because the free accounts will not include email. Let's just hope that, if I drop my paid account, they will have let me link me @me.com sign-in to my apple account so I don't lose anything!

Apple mail like Google mail?

Maybe this will mean that everybody can get a free Apple Mail account like google mail!? So Steve can now analyze our contacts and messages.

Time machine will save that info for a clean install. Dropbox helps. iTunes can sync the rest when you connect your iOS device. I decided not to renew my MM a few months ago and although it is nice to have i am doing fine without it. Certainly way overpriced. Even after Amazons discount. Find my iPhone was the one thing i would choose to have if they opened the suite up and let you choose to pay for certain functionality individually.

I pay the regular yearly fee for this service. For my money I should hope that very few Premium features of the service I pay for find their way into this supposed free version. Or else cut the fee I pay in half.

100% agree. In addition I have not been very impressed by MM so far but keep it hoping it will improve overtime...Not sure what Apple strategy is if they give free service they are also reducing their revenue stream...Does it mean less focus as less investment in the future??
