The Digital Hub Comes Together

If it turns out the way we've been describing it, this remote feature is going to be freakin' cool. This is exactly what I've been looking for to tie my ATV, AE and iTunes together.

I love features that are fun to play with/fun to use. The digital hub is starting to come together!

Wow! What would be *REALLY* cool is if the phone rang, it paused iTunes or your AppleTV. That would be a very kick ass feature.

If they don't add it, I will need to email Steve Jobs to suggest it :D

You could probably do that with Perceptive Automation's Indigo home automation software and Ovolab Phlink telephony software.

I'm still pretty new to Insteon, but I'm pretty sure there's a way to make that work.

I am happy this application is coming, and reportedly it is free.

But I wonder why Apple didn't simply include this as part of the new firmware, like Stocks, Weather, Maps, etc? Before people say that not everyone will need this, one could make the same argument that those apps are less used than this would be.

Yes, the Airport Express does exactly that.

A little different than what you're doing, but I have an Airport express in each room of my loft that I want to hear music (Bed, Bath and Kitchen) and an :apple:TV in my living room. Each is connected to a small amp and speakers.

When I want to listen to music in a specific room, I play it in iTunes and select the one or more rooms where I want that music to play.

This app will allow you to do all that without going back to your computer.

LOL! I have the same thing! Bedroom, Kitchen, Living Room, Entry, and Guest Bedroom all have this setup.:D:D I use the JBL Creature speakers. They have nice sound and look cool if someone happens to look up at the top of the furniture they are on. LOL

golly gee beave!

Wow...sounds like the signal app that I've had on my iphone for months...

THis is just fantastic news. I've been waiting for this ever since I tried Remote Buddy and found it to be very, very laggy.

To those using Alloysoft's Signal, is it responsive? For example, when I was using Remote Buddy, if I did an operation that required drilling down into folders and such, it was just way too slow to use. For example, from playlist view, go to artist view. Choose a letter category of artists, then choose an artist. Then choose an album and then a song. That's maybe 5 operations, and it could easily take a minute using Remote Buddy.

Oh well, sounds like I won't have to worry about any of that soon. And free, too! Maybe it will sync the .xml file to the iPhone so that library navigation is instant.

that is really, really cool

I am so looking forward to seeing all the new apps.

Any idea on the approx number that could be available on July 11th?

I'm going to turn you in, you illegal hacker! :p

I agree though. I'm sure many of the first apps in the app store are going to a lot of things us jailbreakers have been using for months.

iTunes is neat, but it would be amazing to get an Apple TV remote. The standard one is kind of lacking. How awesome would it be to get one with full buttons, plus maybe a quick menu to get you to Movies/TV Shows/etc with just one push (from any other place in the interface)
It would be nice, but it goes against Apple's KISS philosophy.

Anyway, I'm glad I bought my 32 GB iPod touch, nice to see that in addition to 2.0, it will also gain some additional functionality.

Well, the free SDK topped 250,000 downloads, but not all Apps. will be available at launch. There is also the iPhone development program members, and Apple will have some Apps. like the one mentioned here.

Just a guess, but I think between 5000-7500 at launch, but more to follow in the days after App. Store release.***

*** I do not have a source, it's just my guess. Don't hurt me! LOL

Okay... to make the ultimate come to be.... Apple need to do one last thing... Provide 'multi-zone' support within iTunes...

I want airtunes living-room to play this playlist / or single song
I want airtunes family-room to play that playlist / or single song
I want airtunes deck to play some-other playlist / or single song

This would destroy multi-zone whole house audio systems as we know them today... Those systems can run into 'thousands of dollars' and with install fees you could probably double the hardware cost and add it to the bottom line.

The 'messy part' is how to provide such potentially complex and user-unfriendly task and wrap it up in an elegant easy to use Apple UI.

Very cool! I've wanted a remote solution for my Mac Pro and this will do quite nicely. :)

This vs Squeeze Duet

Will have to wait and see what this really means, but if it will allow you to select AirTunes Devices including :apple:TV remotely, then this may be a good alternative to the Squeezebox Duet I was thinking of.

We already have a Squeezebox 2 in the living room, sitting next to an :apple:TV, but prefer the Squeezebox for music, as it doesn't need the TV for menu's.

The Duet would be for the kitchen, which already has an Airport Express for music... this app may well wrap all that up very nicely

I was considering the 'Touch as a basic mini Tablet anyway, for browsing, email (even work email if the ActiveSync works as suggested) etc....

... $300 for a 'Touch or $450 for the Squeeze Duet. hmm..

Don't worry I wont hold you to it... Given the fact that out of the QUARTER OF A MILLION people who downloaded the SDK translated into TWENTY FIVE THOUSAND developers who has a serious desire to pay the developer membership fee and in turn have access to the iPhone 2.0 firmware and have the ability to publish their apps on the iTunes App Store...

Well Apple only chose to allow 4000 of the 2500 admittance... So to think you'll see anywhere near 5000 apps at launch isn't really realistic... I'd be shocked if we see even 400... Apple is clearly doing things in a very slow and deliberate pace... The last thing they need is for a major screwup happen and put a huge black eye on everything they've done to date... I don't blame them even tho I'm mad for not being one of the 'chosen'. :(

BUT - Apple only accepted about 4,000 people into the developer program (which is required to upload your application to the Apps Store).

I bet we see about 100-200 apps at launch. I'm looking forward to the Connect 4 app the most :)

Holy smokes!

Is this basically Sonos?

I don't need an iPhone but I think I'd buy one just to Sonos-fi my Airport Express setup.

Coverflow on my iPhone to control iTunes in my house, I think I'm impressed!!!!

Ummm... I'm gonna go way out on a limb and say that perhaps it so people have a reason (or one more reason) to take a trip the the new App store?

Dave

Perfect!

I've got my iMac hooked up to my stereo, and that has 4 sets of speakers, including a pair out on my back deck. Now I won't need to run inside during a BBQ or party when a song comes on that nobody likes - just whip out my iPhone and get something good playing :)

I'm looking forward to getting an iPhone for this reason.

For now I have my Airport Express hooked to my amplifier. I then use my laptop out in the backyard. Works great and you can play CDs too.

You are probably right.:) Wishful thinking on my part. I do wonder how long it takes for the "App. Store Team Pros" (sounds like an Apple name:D) to process each App. and declare it worthy of being included in the store. So maybe more like 5000 Apps within the first 2-3 months is more realistic...
