What would I need to buy in order to use this to control my stereo at home? I have a stereo exclusively dedicated to playing the speakers located throughout my house. However, it's a pain because each room only has volume controls on the walls so there's no way to control the music playing. So what I do now is just leave it on a radio station 24/7. Is there something I could buy and hook up to my existing stereo to play my itunes over wi/fi so I could control the music with my iphone? Since it will only be used for music, it seems a shame to fork out the cash for an appletv.

I don't understand.

Why advertise that it's a remote that controls iTunes from anywhere in your home? If you're in your bedroom and your Mac is in your office, how would controlling iTunes remotely benefit you? Or is it assuming your speakers are so loud you would hear iTunes from wherever in the house you are?

Or is that they maybe mean this app gives you remote streaming of iTunes movies and music onto the iPhone? See...that would make sense for ANYWHERE in the house....but why a remote control you can use anywhere?

See my above post. :)

Maybe Airport Express Airtunes will be able to be controlled by the iPhone remote?

yeah, but I've been finding it real difficult to make a decent phone call on my $19 remote lately

Or even on my expensive Philips Pronto for that matter... :D The iPhone / Touch as a remote will BE HUGE in the low to mid end home theater / home automation circles... mark my words on this one. Apple is going to put a lot of overpriced devices out of business real quick.. that you can bank on.

Yes, the Airport Express does exactly that.

A little different than what you're doing, but I have an Airport express in each room of my loft that I want to hear music (Bed, Bath and Kitchen) and an :apple:TV in my living room. Each is connected to a small amp and speakers.

When I want to listen to music in a specific room, I play it in iTunes and select the one or more rooms where I want that music to play.

This app will allow you to do all that without going back to your computer.

Wow! What would be *REALLY* cool is if the phone rang, it paused iTunes or your AppleTV. That would be a very kick ass feature.

If they don't add it, I will need to email Steve Jobs to suggest it :D

Apple released a pre-release version of iTunes 7.7 for developers tonight. In the Read Me of the iTunes installer is a hint at a previously unannounced iPhone/iPod Touch application:Apple reveals that they will be offering a free app on the App Store that allows you to remotely control iTunes in your home from your iPhone or iPod Touch. The application will presumably work under Wi-Fi to control playback of iTunes.

Apple has previously patented methods to implement such an iPhone Media remote control.

[EDIT]: I have confirmed that "Remote application for iPhone or iPod Touch" is in fact mentioned in the installer's Read Me, so disregard my question here.

Which Readme are you looking at? I've downloaded iTunes 7.7, and the "Read Before you Install iTunes 7.7.rtf" makes no mention of the word "remote".

Is there a different readme file, or is this report BS??

This is killer. (And a totally smart move by Apple. Get people to start downloading right out of the gate.)

I hope it controls my AppleTV too. Finding the tiny white remote is a pain...

sweet. I asked for this feature about a year back and now its finally here. Keyspan and Sonos must be really peeved right now. I can't wait

what else?

what I'm wondering is when and with what else is this going to be announced? are there a slew of other apple apps that are going to be announced before jul. 11? available for download on the app store? interesting.

When you run the installer, it is in the Read Me window that most people click through.

OK, thanks. I've just re-run the installer, and can confirm that "Remote application for iPhone or iPod Touch" is mentioned in the "Read Me" portion (under "What's new in iTunes 7.7").

Sweet!

This is awesome! Thank you Apple! Since I have my macbook hooked up to two :apple:TVs around my house using airTunes, I can control everything from my iPhone! YAYA! Cant wait to have a party with music surrounding everyone!!

That's mENtaL!!

Was just about to sell my Touch, think I'll hold onto it now. I just hope that someone will find a way to implement this into Apple TV.

another apple product to buy

Perfect!

I've got my iMac hooked up to my stereo, and that has 4 sets of speakers, including a pair out on my back deck. Now I won't need to run inside during a BBQ or party when a song comes on that nobody likes - just whip out my iPhone and get something good playing :)

Well with this it will make me go get the airport express(2) to hook up around the house.
