We are still waiting for Siri in our language. TV app, News app, apple pay, and a lot of ****.
I really don't think increasing hardware sales is Apple's primary purpose with this original content. People temporarily sign up to HBO and Netflix to watch shows, then quit when they're done bingeing. These people are not going to run out and buy a $100 Apple TV just because of a good series, they're going to run out and get a hacked Firestick for $25, if they don't already have one. Increase in hardware sells linked to great programming is going to be practically nothing for Apple.Of course they will. Apple's original content is nothing more than a means to lure people in the Apple ecosystem. Once they're in, Apple can earn that $$$ via hardware sales.
- The TV content mentioned in this article
- In-person support at the Genius Bar
- MacOS operating system
- iWork office suite
- iCloud Drive, Mail, Calendar, Photos, etc.
- GPS navigation
- U2 album Songs of Innocence
- Beats1
- Apple Camp (free 3-day "summer camp" including music making, coding, movie making, and robotics classes for kids)
- Apple Today (free classes for photography, music, coding, and also basic training for their products and applications)
- Ongoing free upgrades to new versions of their Pro software (for example Final Cut Pro X)
I was quite obviously being hyperbolic, but some of your examples are absurd.
GPS navigation has been free for everyone from every company for years before Apple Maps. iCloud Drive is woefully inadequate and far below competitors with a measly 5 GB of free storage. Most of the rest are major selling points of Apple products which would be wildly overpriced if they weren't included, so labeling them "free" is debatable.
It's only a game changer if Apple have decent content. Given the content they've created so far, and the limitations they've put on creators its likely to be very mediocre and/or crappy reality shows.

I'm already offended by the lack of offensive shows. They will fail if they aim for nothing but the rated G crowd, or even PG for that matter. There's already too much competition and prematurely putting extreme limitations on content is a stupid business move. They're in such a bubble at Apple HQ that they actually believe this is a void that needs to be filled simply because it fits their wishful thinking.
Most content on TV these days is very poor quality because it is driven by ideology not storyline. I don't see Apple being any different, so I don't see Apple capable of producing outstanding content. It might be good enough for teenagers and recent college grads, Apple's target demographic, but anyone with any experience will not be fooled.
Isn’t iWork free?

You make a valid point, but that's cause it's crappy app. It's there to sell hardware and doesn't cost Apple much. Original contents/TV will cost much more than seldom upgraded software.

One man's trash is another man's treasure.Crappy!??!
Have you actually used it (them)?
Sure they have limitations, but I'll take Keynote and Pages over MS word and PP every single day of the year.
For educators the apple suite of free productivity proggies is extremely useful and they are really easy to use. I'd pull my hair out if I had to use MS word, Excel or PP. I just had a coworker swap over to Apple MBP and he says his ability to produce lessons and content is far better now than when he was on Windows.
In saying that, there are a few things I desperately wish Apple would add to Keynote, but this thread is not for that.

As for free TV shows... who cares. As if the programs Apple are going to make will be anything beyond bland. Like most of everything made for TV today it's all overly dramatic. Can we please get some edgy comedies back??? Without Curb, TV would be a barren wasteland for edgy comedy.
Surely there'll be a paid for version for people on other devices? Nobody wants a world where the stuff you can watch is completely decided by what device you have do they?
Does Amazon’s Alexa or Google Assistant support your language (no need to keep it secret)? And indeed for instance Apple Music is available in far more countries than Spotify or its other competitors. No reason to think this will be any different.Free to any user around the world except that they have to live in the US.

I said professionals. That excludes drunk office workers, who play dodgeball on weekends...

Ugh, I hate platform exclusives. It’s bad enough with games, don’t let it happen to TV!It's possible, they did it with Apple Music, but I think Apple likely sees it as a value add to their ecosystem. That's not something they would give away easily. I wouldn't be surprised if it were something they kept in house to drive people to their own hardware. It would be a big advantage.
