As a travel blogger who ditched his heavy dslr & lenses for an iPhone to take all my pictures with, this news makes me very happy. Better sensors are needed for better pics. I'm probably one of the few excited for the iPhone 7 just because of the dual lens camera.

You've never missed the ability to zoom in with a dedicated camera? Or I suppose you could be satisfied with a digital zoom. I guess social media doesn't require high resolution images, so zoom crops are sufficient.

Not to mention DOF.

Barely a drop compared to the amount of people in Cupertino.

Sounds like you have numbers handy regarding their employees engaged in R&D. Can you post those here, for both Cupertino and their facilities around the world?

This is probably the biggest thing to come out of Grenoble France since Andre the Giant.
You have no idea what Grenoble is.

Everytime there has been some news about a new Apple location around the world, it has been a small team that was already there.

They don't open big R&D centers like other companies. Even in the US they have been largely Cupertino-based.

Except the upcoming Indian place. That will be the first one.

Rochester NY could have benifited from this... Thanks Apple! #sarcasm

Rochester NY is full of imaging talent.
you of course are referring to the Kodak. And that may be true, but was their imaging researches located in Rochester? I thought Kodak had sold off its digital group years ago.

It is "geological action".

And why is it a "weakness" of Apple to have most R&D in Cupertino? Or, why is better to spread R&D people halfway around the world in different time zones? Not exactly the best situation when you need to collaborate on something.

Y2K could be a joke compared to The Big One.

I don't get why when I've compared Samsungs S's camera shots vs iPhones they always appear clearer and nicer. And those phones cameras seem to capture pictures easier meaning less fuzzy pictures. Is it just me or is this true?

My sister has a samsung phone and I can always tell the difference between her phone and mine because the quality is so much lower on hers. At least with video the quality is noticeably lower on hers; with still shots, they're about the same, at least when viewing them on a phone screen. Displaying them on a 55" 4K TV might make it easier to see a difference between the two still shots.

Well... Apple has large R&D centers in Beijing, Shanghai, Indonesia, Cambridge, Austin, Herzliya, and other cities. The Herzliya facility has more than 800 employees. Coming online are India, France, and Japan - the latter with a quarter million square feet.

Is that not enough, or is there an important point you are trying to make? If it's not enough, how much worldwide R&D should Apple have?

I never heard about any large scale software development work done outside of Cupertino.

It’s kind of true. Samsung devices are known for oversharpening images. This makes them look sharper, but somewhat unnatural. Try taking a picture of grass or pavement to see how weird it can look.

Maybe - but I can tell you that my Note 5 takes much better pictures overall than my 6 and definitely in lower light.

This is what happens when you can't repatriate corporate profits back to the US. If you're going to spend it, you might as well spend it where it's at. Think of all the high tech jobs lost in the US due to horrible tax and regulatory laws and policies.

Maybe if you want to repatriate the profits more or less freely, you should first pay proper taxes in the rest of the world.

And when you're done taking all these beautiful photos you store them in the joke of an application that is Apple Photos, reminiscing about Aperture and boy, even iPhoto to some extend.

Understood.

While you guys are busy bitching about Photos, people use it very happily.

My girlfriend is the typical tech illiterate, yet she figured out the new app, including iCloud album sharing, by herself, and immediately. She is especially happy about the new editing tools.

plenty of US based profits to fund these jobs. Maybe Europe has some gifted tech people Apple would like to invest in. If it was tax related, they would be based in Ireland
