Not expecting lower prices, but I'm also not expecting Apple to start waves of price increases when it hasn't been in their culture in the past. Thought I wouldn't be surprised that -- should the M5 Max Mac Studio be released tomorrow -- that it would be released at a higher price than what the M4 current sells for today.

Apple ordered up a new $100B stock buy back in April 2026. This is well after it is apparent that there was unprecedented RAM/NAND component costs increases coming. Apple's stock run up over 2025 was merely about 10%. oh boo hoo that is 'horrible'. Huge need to buy stock to push the price here there; not. By late March down 2.5% up from start of 2025, but numbers for Mac Neo about the roll in and shocker stock is much higher. Apple though they had a deep need to buy on verge of grabbing more market share? Or simply just trying to goose the price higher by whatever means available? Maybe use some of the $100B to pay for R&D with money you have as oppose to suck more of out customers pockets?
[ If Apple is concerned about goosing price to retain more workers that have sizable portfolios then throwing some customers under the bus is probably on the table. ]

I suspect Apple priced the increases for the M4 models at what they expected to mostly cover the M5 era's pricing. However, if demand did not drop as much as they expected for 'aging stuff', I would not put it past them to tack on a bit more. If Apple is offering 'too good' of pricing then demand will outstrip supply even more when the folks waiting on an upgrade jump back in. The Apple 'norm' is to make price adjustments at new products update boundaries.

However, especially for the Ultras. In the M5 gen era, the Ultras seems likely to be more expensive/harder to make when the Max has been split in two. Now need to compose 4 'chlplets' into a single system instead of just 2. The chiplets themselves may have gotten incrementally cheaper but the packaging probably got more expensive. The current Ultra Studio isn't even a M4. So skipping from gen 3 to 5.

Current M4 Max to M5 Max transition has a better chance of being price stable after the recent bump increase.

Supply chain is a good point as well. I have it in the back of my mind that, if a M5 Max version is released before shipment I'd probably cancel/order the M5, and if it happens during the return window, I'd seriously consider it. But probably not whinge much if it happens immediately following.

At one point, Apple used to 'upgrade' folks whose order delivery date was somewhat delayed after a new product introduction. (e.g., delivery date of Dec 1, and Apple comes out with a direct replacement product Nov 1. They'd contact buyer and ask if really still wanted older model. ) Not sure what current policy is. But if hold a queue priority by doing a 'swap' then there is value in letting Apple do it.

Delivery days before... there is a return and swap. However, very likely getting back into the 'end of the line' again.

I wouldn't 'time' getting out of line on Gurman and these 'rumor pundits' that do not have deep connections in the retail channel. If there is a store leak that new ones are in warehouse and going into pricing system. If in the future (next week , next month , etc) that isn't good enough for a product where the delay factor of going to the end of the line is significant.

Reading through the article and all this chatter makes me sit back and be content with what I already have.
You are in a good spot. I have a 2020 iMac I was ready to upgrade last year to an M4 Max Studio, but couldn't afford it at the time. When I was finally ready, they up the prices and now rumors about the M5 came out. Now who knows when that is coming and what it will cost.

Same now with my wife's old intel MacBook Air, and the M5 MBA.

AI would be so much more tolerable if it wasn't ruining things for normal people.

How well are your eyes corrected? Cuz most optometrists aim for vision correction to 20/20, if it's possible with your specific eyes. With 20/20 vision, it's very, very easy to resolve more than 4K on 31.5" monitors at say 20" viewing distance. I have a very strong prescription and relatively significant astigmatism as well, yet I found 4K on 31.5" monitors on macOS simply too low a pixel density, which is why I'm on a 6K 31.5" monitor now. For 27", 4K is OK, but 5K is better. However, I find 27" monitors too small in general. 6K 31.5" is the sweet spot for me. It maintains a flat screen as well.

Most of those curved ultra wides are relatively low pixel density. For instance, a 5K ultra wide is usually 40", which yields the same pixel density as a 4K 31.5" monitor. As mentioned above, I find the pixel simply too low on those. A 5K ultra wide at 34" would yield the same pixel density as a 4K 27" monitor, which is OK. However, those 5K ultra wide 34" monitors are very uncommon.
I've got the paperwork somewhere but I haven't gotten an exam since 2013 because my prescript was doing fine for so long it never came to mind (plus for pro work I have these crazy glasses based on a design from Ben Franklin that have multifocus gels that allow me to reshape the lenses (instead of bi-focals you just touch the bridge and it's full view not part of the lenses) They weren't cheap and the company is long gone so I use them sparingly (Penn Jillette owned a pair). Now of course I can get my eyes checked at the same place I'll upgrade my prescript & frames for a fraction of the cost of 20 years ago.

The point is, I can see the difference in 1080p to 4k+ but do I really notice 4k+ on anything less than 32" - no. So I don't see the point.

(to coin a phrase)

my 27" imac is aging. Hopefully, Apple comes up with iMac 27" with Max chip inside...

Don't hold your breath . First, Apple has openly stated that the Mac Studio was the replacement for the iMac large screen. If the Mac Studio was doing very poorly in sales then they might backslide/backtrack over that decision.
The Max Studio backlogged where are they going to get Max's for an iMac?
