Apple better pull their collective heads out and address the shortcomings that have become downright embarrassing. They've had 2 years now - give us copy/paste, MMS, background notifications, etc. And where's the blasted turn-by-turn navigation app???

I love my iPhone, but the posers are crowding the rear view mirror (Palm, Google, MS) now. It's time for Apple to put the hammer down and leave these wannabes in the dust.

Like last year, they'll preview 3.0, but it will likely be released in June along side a new iPhone.

Yes. This will probably be just like the preview last March.

The only thing I want to see from this is PUSH/background services. No excuse for that to have completely disappeared. I want some explanation as to why it never came out. IM apps are useless right now unless I have them send me SMS messages, and then it's just complicated. I've contemplated switching to a Blackberry recently because of some of the quirks the iPhone still has. This preview is HUGE as it will tell me if Apple is moving on to address the shortcomings or not. 2.0 was a big jump over 1.0, so I hope 3.0 is the same.

Better be some cool stuff for them to make an event out of it. I hope it doesnt turn out to be just Google Maps new features which seems to get more updates than anything else >.<

I can't wait to NOT get the following:

Copy and Paste
MMS
Video Recording
Wide Screen Texting and Emailing
Custom SMS tones.

Anyone think we were all wrong to assume the 24th event was going to be "PRO" or SL Software related? Surely there aren't two events coming up?

I have to assume the 24th was moved up to the 17th and was always going to be iPhone 3 software and just nobody figured it out.

The Pro apps (at least Final Cut Studio) are in line for an update soon anyway. My guess is that it'll be within the next few months.

My short-list of hopes for 3.0.

Copy and paste
Voice dialing
MMS support
Push notifications/background apps (at least on the new hardware)

I'm in agreement except for MMS. Apple seems to be promoting email (particularly MobileMe email) for this purpose, rather than allowing only the carrier to profit by supporting MMS.

That's likely.

Also like last year, I hope the software is backward compatible with the 1st gen iPhone.

Unlike last year, I hope they introduce MMS and Copy & Paste. This is getting ridiculous.

hopefully the iPhone will turn into one of those multi-touch tables but smaller.

I like the UI, but it could be a lot better.

Copy & paste? Video recording? Picture msgs?

...or just stability improvements?

some of those features but not all. Apple could have given all those features for the current 3g iPhone but purposely chose not to because what would they have to market with the next iPhone if they gave the consumers everything.

If 3.0 doesn't have the option to turn off the triple alert on text messages, I'm going to punch Steve Jobs in the face.

I'm excited for another giant let-down! WOOHOO!

Apple: Over-promise, under-deliver!

It should be more like

Apple Fanboys: Overhype and have wild fantasies

Apple: Deliver great stuff that could never live up to some fanboys wild dreams or made up rumors.

Good timing for me, hopefully will be less busy at work that week.

They need to round out the features:

* Video recording
* MMS
* Copy and paste
* Push notification system

I also wouldn't mind the option for background applications, even in terms of low-memory daemons that only run when the phone is being used. I.e., you're in Safari, so the background IM application can also run. You shut down Safari and sleep the device, the IM application sleeps as well.

I actually expect we'll find out about some new APIs, the extension of iPhone OS into a more generic mobile OS (for tablet later this year), and so on.

It's always unwarranted speculation that leads to what you call "under-delivering." You're only let down by your own expectations.

Also, anyone think we'll see the new iPhone (what will it be called? iPhone3?) before WWDC. Maybe May?

Apple would be insane not to have a major hardware revision available for purchase the day 1st gen iPhone owners' 2-year contracts are expiring. Throw some cold water on Palm's Pre, Apple.

I'm holding on to my 1st gen model until there's new hardware to be had.

That's hawt

Push notification should be good, but won't it be limited on older iPhones with less memory/processor power? I imagine the next gen iPhone 2,1 will be able to handle the multitasking that comes along with push notification with a breeze.

Looking forward to it!

Wonder what goodies we'll get/not get.

Wonder what features they'll remove just to annoy us.
