Top o the morning to ya, b'gorra I'm sure a March 17th announcement means all the bugs will be driven from the iPhone like the snakes driven out of Ireland before St Patrick. (I'm Irish, real Irish, born and living in Ireland, so I'm allowed to take the piss out of myself ;) )

Copy-Paste, and push notifications would be my top bets, then Flash and background apps and finally MMS and maybe turn by turn GPS.

IRISH TOO! HIGH FIVE!

BTW Ireland never even had snakes to begin with. Pretty easy for him to claim it was him who got rid of them :D

Now lets get to work on getting an Irish Apple Store, eh descsramble?

While push and copy-paste are probably coming, I think this will be about a lot more than that. Those features are important but if it was just that it could have come in a regular update, not 3.0.

I think they will debut a re-worked interface that will one-up the Prie, and introduce better app management. The existing OS GUI came about when people only had the default apps on their devices (at least non-jailbroken units.)

I think they're planning something HUGE for 3.0 and then it's gonna KILL US to wait until June.... June can't come fast enough already and they haven't even announced anything.

Also, if the Firmware is compatible with the iPhone 3G, it WILL be compatible with the first gen. Hardware-wise, they aren't very different. 3G is using the same processor speed and memory.

Hummm… I take it you're not really excited by this announcement?

:D:D

Sorry, I'm just used to being let down by Apple lately.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5H11 Safari/525.20)

I wonder if they plan to release the software with a new iPhone or if this will just be the next big jump fir the iPhone OS. Maybe they will make mention of a new iPhone at this event.

i really hope they introduce a new way to categorize the apps or break the 9 page limit.

Oh, no! Just a preview? But then, that does mean the change is a big one as I've been hoping. (No offense, OS 2.x.) I don't know what to feel :)

Please standardize the OS name better along the way. iPhone OS doesn't make sense on an iPod.

Mac OS X and Touch OS X?

Apple would be insane not to have a major hardware revision available for purchase the day 1st gen iPhone owners' 2-year contracts are expiring. Throw some cold water on Palm's Pre, Apple.

I'm holding on to my 1st gen model until there's new hardware to be had.

Yeah but for a 2-year-to-the-day release is still putting us in September...

March 15th is a rumored release date for the palm pre.......

hopefully multi tasking and push services. Until then my old blackberry 8700 with its cracked screen will do me just fine :)

my one wish: opening of links in new tabs. And unlike c&p this is dead simple to implement: tap and hold and select "open in new tab"

for the love of god, haha

-MMS
-Video Recording

I can Dream

Video recording, sure. Can't wait for that. But MMS? Hardly. Great, I can send text messages to someone with a *heavily* shrunk copy of a picture I took on my phone.

Phones in general support MMS images from 60x80 *UP TO* 320x240. That's it. .0048 MegaPixels to .0768 MegaPixels. In comparison to the original size of 2-5 MegaPixels. Seriously. How do you expect to actually send a useful copy of an image with that kind of shrinkage going on?

MMS is a hack best left to the past.

Maybe it has something to do with this???

Also, anyone think we'll see the new iPhone (what will it be called? iPhone3?) before WWDC. Maybe May?

My favorite line in the story:
According to the Android development Web site, the changes introduced in the Cupcake branch have now been merged into the master branch.

They literally named a code branch the "cupcake" branch?

Wow.

Maybe I'm just a simple guy, but while I'd welcome the software improvements mentioned thus far in the thread (copy & paste, MMS, background notifications, video recording, etc.) I'm much more interested personally in new hardware. I'd like:

-an improved camera (at least 3.2MP) preferably with a flash
-HD screen
-802.11N

That's just me though :)

I know we won't likely hear about any hardware improvements on the 17th, but come June, I'd reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally like a great excuse to upgrade my 1st gen 8GB...

So will there be a new I-phone or just a new OS , I want an i-phone. DO i buy now or wait. I'm thinking wait.

Ya know.........I was gonna say in the other thread that they will just show the OS at this event and then the phone itself at June's WWDC. But now that I think about it the only thing of real importance to show off about the iphone is the OS itself.
So now I think that the iphone hardware along with the new OS will debut Mar 17th!!

What do you all think?
