lol it is surely not a PC replacement as Apple loves to advert, but calling an iPad a pointless device is BS. More likely macOS will become locked like ipadOS/iOS. If no law comes to the rescue, I give it max 3-5 years, then it’s gameover with macOS sideloading.
I bet nothing of the sort is going to happen.

Just makes no sense on a computer. Apple knows that. They also stated numerous times that they are not going to follow that route

Running arbitrary code can be a security nightmare. In stead of making a judgement call on it, it's just easier to stop all of it. You are not important to Apple so they sacrifice you for better security for those who don't know what they're doing.
Pretty sure the code is all executed with the bounds of the app. Security is no different to any other app.

The AppStore remains the worst part of the Apple ecosystem. These rules drive technical and enthusiast users away from Apple’s platforms. Eventually Apple will suffer from policies like this as other platforms become better and more open…

Windows 11 won’t support Intel Mac upon official release. They’re implementing more requirements to make Windows more “secure”, which apparently Apple didn’t have support for in their hardware at all, even a freaking TPM in their firmware!
You can run it in parallels which does have software support for TPM.

If you want complete freedom to download and tinker around, iOS isn’t for you. You knew this before you signed up, so don’t act like you’re entitled to something that was never on offer. Stop the whining and just move on. There are plenty of people happy with the platform that Apple created.

That being said, if there was a way to work within the guidelines to offer something like this, it would be pretty neat. If I could pull up old Apple II programs, I would be all over that. But I’m not holding my breath, and I’m not going to whine. Even a little whine is not good for the soul.
Complaining is a way to affect change. Yes we all knew that Apple is obsessed with platform control which puts it at odds with emulation or anything that looks like another platform. It doesn’t mean this is a good outcome of this compulsion.

Copying a copyrighted game to a new medium (except for backup purposes) are likely a copyright violation, thus piracy, in the US.

Also most people running old games in an emulator hasn't copied the game from their original diskette but rather downloaded a copy from the Internet which in the US are illegal.
This is a DOS emulator. Licensing never worked that way on this platform.

It’s like building a garbage dump behind an apartment complex.
Lol, No, it's not. You're really bad at anaolgies.

It's like enabling a feature that's been present on all other computing devices for 30 years. A feature that the lack of which makes iOS completely crippled.

I can imagine an exploit via JS that leaks through React Native and into the native code, but realistically that's a lot less likely than someone breaching random emulators.

It absolutely can and permissions won't stop it. For instance, a rogue JS script logger. That's trusted code within the app -- nothing will stop it.

The biggest hack ever will be a broadly used NPM package. And everyone will pretend they're stunned.

Sounds like you'd be happier with a non-Apple, non-iOS device.
One you can "sideload" an app to find you places that sell avocado toast and switchel in a smug (I meant mug).
But I understand what you mean: why can't I buy a new F-150 with a 3.5L twin-turbo engine, and then install a Dodge Ram transmission---with the warranty still intact and protected by Ford?
Deep thoughts for a Thursday, I'll tell ya.
Guess what? YOU CAN!

The Ford warranty will still cover everything in that new F-150 except the transmission and any adapter hardware you used to install it, AND the transmission will still be covered by its own warranty, AND the adapter hardware will be covered by its own warranty.

The only parts that the Ford warranty wouldn't cover would be any that your modification damaged. Every other part of that truck would be covered by Ford. And that's not just a good idea, it's the law.

Apple also knows to cannibalise their own products for something better for Apple. Whether it is good for customer or bad is not in their consideration.

Just keep stating that same thing over and over, then flip the switch in one day eating all the words. Talk is cheap.

Well then. Time to chase down every single piece of commercial software (obsolete or not) and send court order for owners of “unauthorised” copies and claim fines. USA lawyer division will gladly assist.

While we are at it, ban encryption so NSA will have a much easier time to monitor every citizen.

Well, it's sometimes a grey zone.
No you don't always need to have the original medium in possession, but i think you must have some valid excuses in case it becomes relevant someday, why you don't own it anymore. E.g. if your house burns down and you restore backups from some cloud backup, thats main the purpose of having a backup, but people are creative. Music, Video and Books you can copy too and these can be even given to closer friends.
EU is not so strict like the US. E.g. here in Germany you can legally resell used digital, split volume licenses, or OEM versions of Windows and other Software, too. while in the US it's not allowed.
They have laws like that in place but doesn’t necessarily enforce every single infringement, unless EU and US bans encryption.

To me the copyright law has been broken across the globe for a long time, and becomes a Tool for big players to stifle innovation and milk old contents forever. Tom Scott has some interesting comments about copyright law and how it affects small creators and sole YouTuber.

DRM protection is also notorious for invading user privacy and capturing contents outside of what they are supposed to protect. DRM in game sometimes also break system, causing data loss. Sadly, outside of technical issue, the broken copyright system will never be fixed, especially in USA.

In my country there is a meme/saying, which can be politely translated like this:
"If your choice is limited to two rather similar options, the chance they both are total crap nears 100%"

If you want the original, search for "Escobar's axiom of choice".

in my country we have a similiar saying. "If you have two starting quarterbacks, you do not have a starting quarterback". :D

I find it interesting that the only defense the pro walled garden crowd have is "go use android".

True, if you mean an NPM package that has native code packaged into it.

It doesn't take a law for Apple to do what helps them keep selling their devices. Mac App Store adoption is so abysmally low that there's no way they can force people onto it without losing nearly all their customers.

iPads are pointless, I won't take it back. You can use a laptop instead for nearly everything it does, and for the few things you can't (like drawing), merging the lines would fix that. Except Apple isn't going to do that as long as people keep buying it. Notice how everyone with an iPad also has a Mac to make up for its shortcomings, but people with Surfaces often have that as their only PC/tablet.

Free country means freedom to express yourself or run your business how you want more so than in other places. For Apple this means this. I don't agree with what they do. I don't even think it's fair to devs, since I've seen how app store rules are applied selectively and how they cowardly carry out the media's witch hunts against devs. But they have the right, and I have the right to ditch them (which I have as a dev and a customer but not as a user).

To all these people parroting "just switch to Android," keep it up, you're right. I also hope some people actually switch to temper Apple's arrogance.
Free country means freedom to operate to the full extent under the law.

Feel free to produce and sell some child pornography openly in the US, and see how much of a "Free" country you live in.

Apple is subject to laws that target monopoly and anticompetitive behaviours.

And “go to android” will soon become relic, irrelevant and incorrect since in android 12, Google is making sideloading much harder and scarier to enable.
Can’t wait to see those loyal defenders what they will come up next, since Linux phone is not really a thing for literally everyone but a few.
