The Handseeing JGnet engine looks some what interesting. I wonder how Apple intends to leverage it if they buy them out. Maybe they'll use it with Core Image/Core Animation/OpenCL/OpenGL/Quartz etc... on top of LLVM?
I just don't understand personally. The company has 40% margins and pays the bulk of its people in America (developers etc.) Why not shell out the money and do everything here in the US, stimulate the economy, perhaps fix Apples QC issues, and maybe start a trend of bringing things back to the US.

Check out the macrumors post about the Graphics Drivers Update. The drivers included with the recent iMac 2010 update seem to increase graphics performance by A LOT. I'm wondering if apple is deciding enter the gaming market? They seem to be taking graphics drivers seriously at the very least... Imagine what apple could do with games. They usually create great products, so if they did get into gaming, that could lead to some very interesting products.
Ever since Valve brought Steam to Mac OS X things have been picking up.
Apple has been working very closely with Valve on OpenGL performance. I'm hoping that the next major release of Mac OS X will signify the jump to OpenGL 4.1. Mac OS X 10.6.3 added beta support for OpenGL 3.0 so it will take some work.
Perhaps Apple should really consider buying NVIDIA that way they can have dedicated staff working to improve OpenGL and drivers.
