Netflix, amazon, and others try to be universal. They target the mainstream at mainstream prices because that is their primary business. Apple's service would be limited to apple device owners, which is a small part of the market. And Apple likes to charge a premium. But what could they offer that would be worth a premium over the netflix's and amazons?

Good luck with that. I'd rather Apple focus on being who they are. Apple has recognized they just aren't good at certain things. iAds? Tim Cook recently spoke about networking and carriers and not being good enough at it. This is another. I'd throw out there the car talk is silly too but that seems to be the fad now.

I'd worry more about embracing 4k content (not original). An apple tv is a premium priced tv box. It sucks. The thunderbolt display? Embarrassing.

Bring back FUTURAMA!

No!

Futurama had a great run and told their story. Every show has to end and Futurama is better off buried. Enjoy what we got.

There wasn't more to be said. Everything was getting repetitive. It was time.

Oh yey, I can't wait till the walled garden with no sex drugs or offensive content comes to tv!! Are you kidding me, am I the only one thinking this is horrible? You think Apple would make a breaking bad or something?! I don't think so.... Apple stick to tech, even that's not going great recently.

First, you CAN stream Breaking Bad, or buy it TODAY on the Apple TV. Apple has never restricted these things.

Second, TV in the 1950s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and over-the-air TV from the 90s to today has always been this way - much content, like nudity is restricted.

Seems like you're just fear mongering and spreading FUD.

Does Eddy Cue have any solutions that don't involve buying other companies?

Be careful what you ask for or you'll end up with another Apple Maps. Yet another service Apple doesn't seem to get.

Instead of buying someone out, Apple should acquire the rights to TV shows no longer in syndication. Sirius XM has a 40s channel, 50s channel, and so on. Apple could have channels for tv shows from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and the like. For original content they could revise the iBooks Author app to include iPitch.

iTunes and services chief Eddy Cue proposed the idea of Apple bidding on media conglomerate Time Warner at the end of last year, according to the FT.

The discussions reportedly never progressed beyond the preliminary stage, however, and did not involve Apple CEO Tim Cook or Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes.

The meetings had reportedly been arranged for the companies to discuss other partnerships, such as the inclusion of Time Warner assets in Apple's much-rumored streaming TV service.

Time Warner and its subsidiaries own several iconic media properties, including CNN, HBO, TBS, and TNT, that would be appropriate for a Netflix-like service streamable on the Apple TV, Mac, iPhone, iPad, and other devices. The company also holds the broadcast rights for the NBA in the United States.

The report adds that Apple plans to ramp up spending on original content to "several hundred million dollars a year" in order to better compete with rivals like Amazon and Netflix, both of which offer a growing number of exclusive TV series.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Apple executives met with TV producers and Hollywood studios about developing original TV shows that it would offer exclusively to its iTunes customers. Those discussions were also reportedly led by Cue and Robert Kondrk, vice-president of iTunes content.

The original content could spearhead Apple's plans to launch its streaming TV service, which has been delayed due to its difficulties in securing deals with media providers like CBS, ABC, Fox, Disney, Discovery, and Viacom.

Earlier reports claimed that Apple would offer a skinny bundle of channels for around $30 to $40 per month, while the original content would presumably be available to stream or purchase on the iTunes Store.

In April 2015, Time Warner CEO Bewkes said he was "pretty confident" that Apple will eventually launch a streaming TV service.

Macs are off the radar in the Appleverse: time for a takeover of the computer production by someone who cares.

"Instead of buying someone out, Apple should" Make new shows, innovate, reimagine, whatever but get rid of the dross that passes for TV.

Would anyone actually care about this? I doubt I'll utilize Apple for my viewing content. Devices can cost more than all the others, but when I'm buying media, I go for the cheapest. The quality in the movie doesn't change.

Apple stock is down this morning while the broader market is slightly up. Wall Street doesn't seem too enthused with this leak. I think it's a terrible idea. Eddy Cue has enough on his plate already. And it's not like what he has is really best in class so perhaps he should work on improving what already oversees first.

"Instead of buying someone out, Apple should" Make new shows, innovate, reimagine, whatever but get rid of the dross that passes for TV.

Truth. I only have two appointment shows these days and both are in-between seasons.

They should still be attempting to buy Time Warner. Content ownership is king... That's why Comcast went the route they did with NBC and their attempts now at Dreamworks...

This shouldn't be contingent on a desire to have an IP streaming tv service.

This is the type of idiocy that happens when a visionary like Steve is gone. Apple is run by committee now and consensus matters. That all leads to incompetence, money wasted, and a general malaise as lethargy sets in. Apple is in deep trouble.

Original content from Apple sounds like a disaster quite honestly.

This is a list of acquisitions made by Apple and it's very revealing seeing how they've been fairing up recently, you simply can't buy "cool" Apple.

View attachment 633032

For sure, Apple didn't do nothing, didn't announce anything... "Original content from Apple sounds like a disaster quite honestly."

This is the ridiculous that Google and Microsoft fanboys sound.

Google does nothing, their business plan now is putting more Ads on YouTube, and now putting Ads on Google Maps.

Microsoft also does nothing, their business plan is firing Nokia employees.

And yet, here it comes the specialist "Apple doesn't innovate", "Apple can't buy cool", "All Apple does is make smaller iPhones and bigger iPads".

Can you compare the list of those acquisitions to the much poorer Google?

Can you compare what those acquisitions have done/are doing, to the failure-factory Google? (Google Glass, Nest, Boston Dynamics, etc.?)?

Sounds like you're bothered by Apple's success... that's good.

It was more important for Apple to buy Beats Audio instead. Seriously, buying Beats was a ridiculous call on Apple's part. Should have gone to TV/original content.

Huge mistake, why wouldn't want to consume a monopoly? its pretty well known that time warner bought out every local and state politician to basically become the only relevant cable company nation wide.

Maybe it was the whole lakers blunder? You know damn well TWC was not hoping for the lakers to have the worst seasons after they singed the deal thinking there was going to be another dynasty with kobe, pau, dwight, nash, artest. LOL I'm sure they're going to hire a basketball consultant before they make a decision like that again.

If apple bought TWC, lol the lakers would become apple's problem. But then again, apple and one of the greatest sports franchises in the world? Not a bad marketing scheme.

Apple needs to shake up things in an industry that wants to hang on to their 30 year old business model. After they take over Time Warner they can fire the dead beats and clean out the closet.....

Apple,

Please buy Sony Entertainment and fix their abhorrent Super Hero movies they've been coming out lately. Yes, I'm looking at you Superman v. Batman!

Yes, this is how Apple should "fix" super hero movies: kill them all.

The ultimate fix!

Amazon, Netflix and Time Warner are all struggling to make a decent profit. Why Apple wants to go down this route is beyond me.

I could imagine paying for one subscription but not for four.
Exclusive content makes me rather "lend" it from a friend than pay for another subscription

Give them a chance would ya. Making great things takes time. And like Steve and cook say, good products don't just come out every year, they come out when they're ready.

I haven't yet seen someone hate it so much that they thought Sony somehow had something to do with it when Warner Bros. owns DC. That's a new one.

FWIW Sony owns the rights to Spider-Man movies.

OOPS on the Sony part, should have been WB. My bad
