Tim announced Apple TV+ would always be available for one year upon purchase of a qualifying device, rolling and forever.

Apple reneged on that but…

New devices will always have a year’s free trial of aTV+

Apple has now reneged on that.

Not sure how facts can be disagreed with?
Can you provide proof he or Apple said this? I don’t recall anyone at Apple saying that a one year free trial will always be case for years to come.

I'll pay for a month every 5-6 months to catch up on the series that I'm actually interested in, which aren't many.

Too slow of a dribble of shows that interest me. And I don't like how shows come out one episode at a time, once per week anyway.

I buy a device every 2 years on average so that's a good time to catch up.

Loud & clear, no more freebies. Must admit its been a pleasure since 2019 however 'am still not paying a penny when the free sub ends on the 30th. I didn't get any for my M1 IPP purchase but a free 3 mths Apple Arcade I had no interest in.

On the flip side there's yet another 1 yr free Apple TV sub waiting to be activated through my work iPhone upgrade 😁, well only because I have a different Apple ID for my work devices. I assumed Apple figured I have had far too much easy ride with the Apple TV+ freebies.

Lets see what comes with the M1 iMac ordered in May!

Apple TV+ will not succeed until it requires one of those contents providers (TW, HBO, disney, or whatever)

The only thing I watched so far is one of Oprah show.... that's not gonna cut it

I think the service is a sleeping giant that will awaken by the end of the year with huge growth potential with word of mouth and being included in Apple One bundles. I think people will appreciate the quality over quantity approach. Obviously Netflix will always be king with Disney right behind them.

Let’s really put all of this into perspective with global subscriber counts based on recent company reports and analyst estimates.

Disney+ 103 million

HBO MAX 63 million

Peacock 42 million

Hulu 41 million

Paramount+, Showtime, and BET+ 36 million

Starz 15 million

I tried to get the most accurate information I could for these guys. Its possible I’m off on the numbers. Now Apple doesn’t give out their numbers so all we can do is go off of analyst estimates for Apple TV+

Apple TV+ at end of 2020 was estimated at 40 million subscribers by an analyst.

The analyst does not give an estimate for 2021. It’s estimated that 62% of that 40 million is on a promotional plan. That means it’s possible that just shy of 25 million Apple TV+ subscriptions are on a paid plan. Again this is just an estimate from an analyst. Another analyst could have totally different number. But if this is accurate I think Apple is doing a good job and has a good path to success.

We know at least 90 shows, limited series or movies are currently in development or in production. And it’s looking like Apple will have a new release almost every Friday June-August. Not sure about fall and winter yet. But they have a lot of potential and this service is a few years out before we can consider it a failure. Apple drew a like in the sand with their latest montage trailer for what was releasing soon. It ended with the line “Only Apple Originals” Keep the faith. It’s going to be great.

I think Apple TV is the only service I've ever had where you can't cancel your free trial and then use it until the trial is over. The app is telling me if I cancel the trial I immediately lose access.

There are some good shows on here (I've enjoyed Lasso and Mythic Quest) but I doubt I'll ever actually pay Apple for this. Maybe in a year or so and watch a bunch of stuff over a month.

Though with Mythic Quest releasing episdoes weekly... I'm guessing the last episode will be AFTER my trial is up.

Apple seems to do that with subscriptions. I canceled their game service one month into a 3 month trial and it was inactive immediately.

My trial which was extended a few times ends July 1st. I was kinda hoping that each Apple purchase (I easily purchase one thing a year) would extend the trial, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. On its own it isn’t worth a recurring subscription. I already have too many streaming services (Amazon Prime, Hulu, Paramount+, ATT Now with HBO Max). I had cut out Netflix already and was planning on picking it up maybe a month or two each year to binge watch a few things. Might do the same with AppleTV+.

In my opinion the quality of the shows on TV+ is way higher than the crab Netflix puts out these days. I really like fewer shows with more quality than get 60 new shows every month were 95 % is complete garbage. I also like the fact of releasing one episode per week like on Disney+ instead of binging through a season. From my point of view the viewing experience doesn't feel "rushed".
I've seen a number of people express the same opinion. For the life of me I can't wrap my head around the "logic". There's nothing wrong with preferring to watch one episode per week. To each their own.

The problem I have is when the 1 per week crowd disparage full season immediate availability as if it's somehow different. Makes no sense. Availability does not mean "required to binge". Full season delivered episodes can be watched one and hour, one day, one a week, one a month, one a year... doesn't matter if the episodes come once a week or all at once. Viewing frequency is up to the individual. There's never a need to feel rushed. I'm purposely not watching weekly Blacklist episodes so I can binge season 8 over a weekend.

I loved "For All Mankind". The rest of the content is a load of rubbish in my opinion, so I certainly won't be paying for it when my freebie comes to an end.

Apple should throw TV+ in for anyone subscribing to existing services like iCloud storage, Apple Music etc or purchasing a new device. They just don't have the content to have the cheek to demand a monthly fee for Apple TV+.

WOW this entire post is 100% wrong to the highest level. Not a stitch of truth to any of this.

I wouldn't disagree when FACTS are actually posted. 🙄

Yes, happened to me with the 3 months arcade trial. I never thought they would end it immediately. Some one in the household was not amused.... Apple even automatically disables the pre renew warning you can get, you have to activate this manually if you can find it. This is the behaviour of marketing led companies who trust a lot of people will forget to stop their renewal in time "because it is a service to the customer not loosing their subscription". And so maximise profit. It should be forbidden!

It's pretty interesting that if someone doesn't like something then that means nobody else should. 🙄.

Does it ever occur to you that some may like one or two shows (Ted Lasso for example) and that's enough for them to subscribe to the service? Not everyone needs a large library of crap content bundled in order to find value of something. For you to say ATV+ should just be "thrown in" with other services is saying, "As long as I don't like ATV+ then everyone else should agree with me". SMH.

Well tell that to Disney too. They do the same thing with Disney+.

Things I have liked about Apple TV:

The movies Greyhound and Wolf Walker. I liked Wolf Walker much more than Greyhound.

I haven’t found a series yet that I am interested in. I don’t tend to watch series from any streaming service so I don’t consider that a knock against ATV.

I saw someone complain about most of the streaming services showing up on ATV and they thought that it was confusing but I like it. I can see what I am watching on Disney or ESPN or Amazon Prime and just click and go without having to open that streaming service. Netflix evidently doesn’t want to work with Apple’s system so you need to open them from their app.

I will probably watch the Charles Schulz documentary on ATV, although I haven’t been impressed with their Peanuts cartoons. And some of the shows that are in the works I will want to watch at least the first couple of episodes. I may go on one month/off two but I will probably pay for 6 months at first to give them a chance to get some of those shows going.

My overall view is I’m not terribly blown away by ANYONES streaming service. I like as many shows on ATV as I like on Netflix or Disney. And it’s cheaper than the others. My wife would definitely kill me if I canceled Netflix or Disney, but I wouldn’t miss them much. Amazon Prime I get because we use Prime delivery a lot, and have since before they included the streaming service with their Prime membership. I see that you now have Prime shows that you have to pay extra to get. Nope.

For a while now, Apple has been running a promotion that offers a free one-year trial of Apple TV+ with any iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Watch purchase. That promotion ends on June 30, and Apple has today updated its website to show that from July 1 the included free trial shrinks to three months with eligible device purchases.

Apple-TV-Ray-Light-2-Triad.jpg

Apple has frequently offered promotions or credit for users to stay subscribed to the still relatively new service. Launched in 2019, Apple TV+ continues to grow into a more mainstream streaming service; however, it still has some ways before catching up to Netflix and others. Apple offers original shows such as "Ted Lasso," "The Morning Show," and "See" on the platform.

The new three-month trial will go into effect on July 1, so customers wanting to maximize their free Apple TV+ subscription should purchase their product before the beginning of next month. Devices purchased before then will continue to be eligible for a one-year trial.

The offer of a generous year-long free trial for ‌Apple TV+‌ has been an important part of Apple's strategy to lure in long-term subscribers by giving unfettered access to the full roster of content on the streaming service. ‌Apple TV+‌ launched with a small amount of content compared with other rival services, so it has been crucial for Apple to build goodwill and interest about the service's shows without expecting immediate returns. The company now appears to feel that the content offering has grown enough that a shorter trial will suffice going forward.

The new extension comes ahead of a busy fall season for Apple TV+, where several hit shows, such as "Ted Lasso" and "The Morning Show," will see their second seasons debut.

This is the right decision! Three months is a good time to sample the service as it ramps up productions next year. In a couple years Apple TV+ will be viewed as a great addition to Apple owners' Apple One subscriptions similar to how Prime Video is to a Amazon Prime subscriptions. I seriously doubt that many people subscribe for Amazon's Video Streaming service and pay monthly just for it alone.

Not sure why people are comparing this to Netflix, HBO Max, or Disney Plus. It doesn't appear that this service is angled to compete for those spaces. It feels like it is aimed to add value to hardware purchases and service bundles.

I've been surprised how many shows i have enjoyed on Apple TV+...The Morning Show, Servant, Mythic Quest, Ted Laso, Mosquito Coast, For All Mankind(season 2), Tehran, Trying, Calls, Home, 1971, and Becoming You.

I'm looking forward to Mr. Corman, Foundation, The Line, and Invasion.

It’s all complete garbage. No matter how it’s delivered, over the air, cable, rentals, the internet, etc, it’s the same garbage being delivered and the same loss of audience. Yet another indication Apple is losing it vision.
So, let’s see… Mythic Quest, Ted Lasso, Trying, Defending Jacob, Tehran, Morning Show, etc … are all complete garbage. What is quality then?

I guess that means the end of the twice extended initial year trial? Mine is due to expire in early July, and I was wondering if there might be another extension. I’m still not sold on TV+ for now. I might pay £5 for one month to watch ted lasso, but I won’t be subscribing long term.
i Must be the only one that doesnt think Ted lasso is funny. Not my type of humor this “idiot savant”, like dumb and dumber.

I’ve not found anything to watch. I’m not interested at all in the Oprah aesthetic.

I tried an animal show. It was OK, but also slightly irritating. I strongly dislike reality TV as it is a lie. The animal show was like that. It tried to tell a story about the animals. But I know, like all reality TV, it is picking and choosing clips to make up the narrative they decided to tell. Rather than feature an angry ice road trucker they used a cute little mouse. But it’s all the same lies. Give me Marlin Perkins. He told it to you straight.

I don’t binge watch anything, but I don’t care if the whole season or whatever is available immediately. Well, I sort of don’t care: I usually will read the credits at the end but the next episode counter is a lot shorter than most credits. I don’t watch them after every show that I watch but sometimes I’m curious about who played a character or what company handled some technical detail and they put the start next episode graphics in the way of the credits or they move the credits to a small corner window and you need to click in that window before the next episode auto runs.

Anything that's worth bothering with (hasn't been anything so far), I can buy/rent in the iTMS. There's no need to subscribe to an Apple service.

You might want to give Tehran a try.

I don't find much to watch regularly and keep me fully engaged for a full year on any one of the services. I will always have an Amazon Prime subscription and if I pay to supplement with a second service it would be Apple+. The content has at least been average. Didn't see anything that outright sucked.
