Installed 4.3 on the iPad last night and realised just how big a jump it is in one area: Media playback.

* iTunes Home Sharing is an absolute godsend and works beautifuly. Instant access to your iTunes-based media library through any iOS device without any other setup or apps is a BIG jump forward, especially as all the DRM issues that have caused issues for third party apps don't apply. Anything streamed to your iOS device can also be sent to AppleTV via AirPlay

* AirPlay for third party apps and web videos is another big jump forward. Obviously this depends on how far you've bought into the Apple ecosystem but is you've got an AppleTV setup you now have a really simple way of playing your media anywhere you want. Between Home Sharing and Air Video there's now nothing anywhere in my media collection I can't play on iOS or send straight to the TV via AirPlay.

Those two taken together finally give a simple, almost zero configuration, way of accessing media through the home and playing it on pretty much any screen you want. I've also got a sneaky feeling that this is the first step to sharing your home iTunes library via MobileMe as it'd tie in perfectly with what they've now got.

Tethering sure complicates the purchase decision. Now I wonder if I want the 3G model or if I will just pay for tethering and get the option of using my iPad or my PC from work tethered. The only thing that would make me still go with 3G is if tethering via BT is really flaky or if there really is an actual GPS chip in the 3G model...nothing stated in any apple literature I can find...anyone on these two points?

Also, are there any GPS apps that can pull the GPS location from my iPhone into the iPad and display it on maps?

i didn't see it at first either, but it is in the iPad 2 tech specs under "Location." It's the 12th category down on this page. To answer the first question, it has "assisted GPS."

I'm looking forward to the AirPlay enhancements. Not being able to view video shot on my iPhone 4 without syncing has been a bummer.

I have the same set up (unlocked iPhone from Apple with Tmobile SIM) and whilst I can access the tethering option, when I try and connect my laptop it diverts to a tmobile paywall - I suspect the hotspot app will do the same thing unfortunately.

Aha I see, thanks to you and the others who took the time to explain.

In your case I assume you mean you are on Tmobile US? In the UK Tmobile are usually tolerant of tethering your phone to your laptop (as long as you dont go over your included limit of 3GB) so I would hope the same would extend to the iPhone

I'm sure you're right, but I don't utilize those features. So still boring for me.....

Save for the Safari enhancement it's been a really boring update for me. I can't use Personal Hotspot because my carrier is cockblocking and wants to rape me for more charges to use it. I don't use iTunes for Airplay/Airtunes/Home Sharing or anything of the sort.

Still love my iPhone 4 though.

Looking forward to the physical rotation lock being added again and the improved Safari performance.

Im a little confused with apples implementation of tethering (why cant they make it simple?)

So iOS 4.3 can tether devices via wifi, which is fine, but the US providers make it complicated by asking you to pay extra for the tethering? How do they stop you, is the option greyed out until you pay or something?

I am in the UK using an unlocked iPhone on T-Mobile UK so I am hoping this just works over here without any faff! 3 devices are plenty IMO, any more and your internet speed would crawl along, surely?

I can tether on T-Mobile UK no problem. Got W & W Plus

Truth.

Snap. Can't work out whether I prefer it to my MPB though, different tasks thing. They both rock.

I'm just happy they shortened most of the new text tones. Now most are usable. However a few are still long.

What about the update to Mobile Safari?

i did the android version of airplay to my PS3 from my Inspire and it was flaky and a bit of a PITA to set it up. i'd use Apple for this but i'm out of HDMI ports and apple gear only seems to work with apple gear. if i could have used airplay on my old 3GS with my PS3 or x-box i would have probably kept my iphone

Carriers see the iPhone as a Goldmine, and now try to exploit every single opportunity to make money, taxing every feature the users allow them to tax.

The carriers hand over a lot of cash to Apple when they subsidise the iPhone. That money has to come from somewhere.

1. The new model of tethering in 4.3 creates a Wi-Fi connection, not Bluetooth to your other devices, including the iPad. So far the word is that it is stable and just as fast as built in 3G in an iPad. The annoyance is having to have your iPhone nearby, charged, and to turn the hotspot on in settings each time you want to use your iPad vs. just pulling out a 3G iPad and being ready to go.

2. A GPS chip IS built into the 3G chipset itself which is why GPS *is* available to the 3G iPads, but not the Wi-Fi only models. The Wi-Fi only models will attempt to find themselves with a worldwide database of Wi-Fi hotspots and it tends to be fairly accurate.

3. 4.3 does NOT pass GPS from the phone to iPad when tethered.

Seems like a wise idea to roll this out ahead of the iPad 2 release.
While not the same climate, I wouldn't want to see a repeat of the 3GS, iOS, MobileMe all updated in the same day debacle.

so what about people like me that buy their iphone sim free from apple? No subsidy there!

Its ridiculous that tethering has an extra fee. I pay for 2Gb per month because 200mB is too small but I don't need anywhere near 2Gb. Now if I want to make use of that data plan by tethering I have to fork out more money? No thanks.

Apple should just open it up and take it out of the hands of the carriers. The carriers will complain and then after a year realize their customers are happy and more customers are signing up and all will be well.

The hotspot feature is for iPhone 4 only, correct? Not 3GS? I probably won't even install this update if that's the case. I already have the Air Video app for serving video from my PC to the phone.

Still boring.....I use Atomic browser.

I can't stand the way Safari switches between pages instead of tabbed browsing. It's so slow.

Atomic should get the same improvements Safari does since it uses the same rendering kit.
