Camera is definitely improved in 4.3. Still not exactly snappy but quicker than previous version of iOS.

Apple needs to do something about the software update feature. Right now there are three places to check updates:
1. The software update under the apple menu in OS X
2. Itunes for iOS Apps
3. The new App store in OS X

Apple should update the software update feature to query the data base of itunes and the app store for you in one step. The results would be divided by category: OS X update, App store update, iOS app update. You could click install all or focus on one category at a time.

I just sent this to Apple as a suggestion.

A release today makes a lot of sense. Get 4.3 out to customers, deal with the inevitable issues now, and try to get things cleared up as much as possible before Friday when the iPads come out.

Plus, if the software is *ready*, why delay it further at all? It's not like selling physical stock where you have to wait until all the stores receive shipments and are ready to sell.

Atomic should get the same improvements Safari does since it uses the same rendering kit.

Okay, a little less boring if it improves Atomic as well.
:p

I remember his first movie appearance, in Ferris Buellers Day Off. Where he played....wait for it.....a drug addict!

Ahhh the irony.

Except that wasn't his first movie appearance. Red Dawn was.:D

/IMDB is your friend.....

1. The new model of tethering in 4.3 creates a Wi-Fi connection, not Bluetooth to your other devices, including the iPad.

I've read reports that Bluetooth tethering from iPad to iPhone will indeed be available and working on 4.3.

Several posters on this forum have claimed to try it and that it works. This is good since bluetooth is a lot easier on battery life than Wifi.

Aha I see, thanks to you and the others who took the time to explain.

In your case I assume you mean you are on Tmobile US? In the UK Tmobile are usually tolerant of tethering your phone to your laptop (as long as you dont go over your included limit of 3GB) so I would hope the same would extend to the iPhone

I am on tmobile UK and in the past I have used tethering on my iphone without any extra charge although that was on a £20 sim only 30 day contract deal. I am now using a contract SIM from a BB I bought and sold - they changed the sim to a micro and took off the BB mail charge and I use a "booster" for my internet which is probably why I can't tether at the moment. I read somewhere that I can upgrade for a monthly fee which I might do when 4.3 comes out.

I can tether on T-Mobile UK no problem. Got W & W Plus

Great! Although I have now read that tethering in 4.3 is for the iPhone 4 only and as I have a 3GS then I wont be able to use it.

Curses, so near and yet so far...

EDIT: Oh hang on, you can still bluetooth connect (which is more or less what id want to do anyway since it saves battery) so all is saved! :)

2. A GPS chip IS built into the 3G chipset itself which is why GPS *is* available to the 3G iPads, but not the Wi-Fi only models. The Wi-Fi only models will attempt to find themselves with a worldwide database of Wi-Fi hotspots and it tends to be fairly accurate.

So will the GPS (and apps that use it) still work if I do not have 3G active with a carrier?

3. 4.3 does NOT pass GPS from the phone to iPad when tethered.

Doesn't this seem like a cool feature to have? To transfer location info via BT from your iphone to your ipad? Is there any app out there already that does this?

Tethering sure complicates the purchase decision. Now I wonder if I want the 3G model or if I will just pay for tethering and get the option of using my iPad or my PC from work tethered. The only thing that would make me still go with 3G is if tethering via BT is really flaky or if there really is an actual GPS chip in the 3G model...nothing stated in any apple literature I can find...anyone on these two points?

Also, are there any GPS apps that can pull the GPS location from my iPhone into the iPad and display it on maps?

-Yes, the 3G iPad has a GPS chip in it. Check out the "Location" section of the iPad Tech Specs page
-I don't expect any problems tethering, except if your network reception was slow in the first place. BTW, I'd probably do it over Wi-Fi instead of Bluetooth, but that's me

This is my plan as well. Activate tethering on my iPhone 4 for those rare instances where I'd need it. I don't expect to use it often enough to warrant the extra $129 up front.

Apple should just open it up and take it out of the hands of the carriers. The carriers will complain and then after a year realize their customers are happy and more customers are signing up and all will be well.

The carriers don't have Apple by the balls as much as they used to, but they still do. There's probably contract language preventing what you say, and if Apple violates the contract, carriers can do fun things like pull handset subsidies.

As nice as the iPhone is, I can't think of many people who will pay $600 for one. (The people who bought the unsubsidized iPhone 2G in the beginning were pretty much all well-off early adopters)

Pass until JB...

This update is a pass for me until JB.

I have remote app which is pretty damn good to play music anyway. I have to be at home for home share, so thats pretty much worthless when I am at work more than 75% of my week.
We can put the 4.3 on the wife's iPad, as it is not JB; So any added benefits can be used on that device.
I will NEVER give up my unlimited data on iP4 w/AT&T- they can rob others, which they clearly have no problem in doing so.
TetherMe & MyWI FTW, I will use my iP4 to tether when I need to (which is not much) but regardless...

This personal hotspot in the US is complete theft, again- IMO.
They can keep it, and I will wait for eternity and a day for a couple of minor tweaks.

Pass on 4.3-

didn't they say that iOS 4.3 would be available on the 11th during the presentation?

Selling a phone unlocked and unsubsidized phone only really works when other devices of similar quality will do the same thing - If Apple sells a phone at unsubsidized price, they are jsut going to be beat by 100-200 dollar Android phones that people will buy because they don't give 2 rips about signing teh contract.

People don't care about buying unlocked or unsubsidized. They are way used to getting a free or cheap phone. Google learned this with the Nexus one - it only sold well (as much as it could) when it was bought carrier locked to T-Mobile at $200. Nobody wanted to spend $500 bucks on a phone.

YEs. The rumor says that they will release it early.

Even though I have a Verizon iPhone with Personal Hotspot available to me already I don't and won't use it for exactly the reason you pointed out, it's theft. Why pay twice for something? It's like putting gas in your car in the city and having to pay for it again to go on the Interstate, makes no sense.

I installed the iOS 4.3 GM on both my iPhone 4 and iPad and I tried the iTunes home sharing and I can tell you it really bogged down both devices. Hopefully they will fix this down the road.

question, since i cannot read the whole thread right now...with these new airplay features does it mean i can play movies and videos not dl through the itunes store onto my tv through atv2? do I need a 3rd party app such as Air Video?

It won't just work. You'll have to pay the extra tethering charge.

The biggest ripoff with tethering is the fact that you have to give up your unlimited data plan to switch to one that allows tethering.

* iTunes Home Sharing is an absolute godsend and works beautifuly. Instant access to your iTunes-based media library through any iOS device without any other setup or apps is a BIG jump forward, especially as all the DRM issues that have caused issues for third party apps don't apply. Anything streamed to your iOS device can also be sent to AppleTV via AirPlay
Can you wake up the computer on which the iTunes library resides remotely or does it have to be awake?

Good timing. I've been getting an increasing rate of errors and app crashes of late. Hope this cleans those up. (Granted, I haven't tethered it for >2 months...)
