It makes sense that Apple is bucking it's usual trend of redesigning it's iphone on odd numbers. For one thing, if you believe the rumors, mass production of Liquidmetal Bodies & AMOLED screens won't be ready by this fall. But also. It makes sense that Apple wait for the 10th anniversary of the iphone in 2017 to completely redesign the iphone. The 2016 iPhone will most likely look the same, but as rumored will have a radically improved dual camera, no headphone jack and other internal surprises. Some people may be upset about this, but I'm cool with it. As a photographer, the camera tech alone gets me excited for the iPhone 7. Others may disagree, but that's life. Don't upgrade this cycle then.

This is getting better and better.
seems like I will be returning to iPhone then.

I really don't like aluminum on a phone, not only feels cheap and ugly it's also extremely weak and scratches so easily.

glass is so much nicer, much more durable material if done right like 4s and even better like galaxy s6/s7/Note 5 series.

and anout OLED screens, once you used one,you just cannot go back to the old tech LCDs and not feel inferior.

So he has no real inside information he's just guessing. Why again do rumor sites treat this guy like is word is gold?

Pretty sure he's one of the 'controlled leakers'. He's been pretty consistent with providing information. Wouldn't be surprised if this was the case.

In regards to the glass iPhone, would be pretty interesting. Knowing Apple, they'd definitely have some distinguishing feature that goes above and beyond what the competitors can do. They'll probably use their existing investments and expertise in bending and shaping glass (See: Glass structures for Apple Stores.) for this product.

4 years of aluminium iPhones, 4 years of glass-based iPhones, and then I suspect after that, 4 years of: 1) Either liquid metal iPhones, or; 2) Carbon fibre iPhones.

I personally think it'll be liquid metal, because they've got an exclusive licence for the consumer version of the liquid metal alloy, and secondly because carbon fibre is too common of a material.

All those 2017 rumors make me less excited about the 2016 iPhone
Even before the rumors, anticipating a new iPhone is no longer a topic like it once was. The word is out, Apple's stopped innovating and people are OK with that. It's no big deal.

Smartphones are a regular part of everyday life and no longer something special. Apple will always be full of themselves and that's OK too, we get that. Life goes on and smartphones are simply one of the tools we use. Ignoring the Apple iPhone Upgrade Train saves significant time and money .

Just use your phone as you would your car until you're ready to replace it. Simple.

I think it's the tech press more than the average consumer that's obsessed with things having to look different every year. The hipster writers at The Verge are not the average iPhone consumer. For me personally the biggest improvements Apple needs to make are software/services (Siri API, expand/improve 3D Touch etc) and the camera. None of that has to do with the external design of the phone.

Not sure what you mean by controlled leaker but I highly doubt Apple is feeding him stuff to leak. He might get rumors from the supply chain but this one seems like a total guess.

And this would explain why iPhone 7 will have no major design change... That will come to the iPhone 8 then.

So no tic toc tic toc release for the moment. More a tic toc toc TIC

It won't be glass. It will be liquidmetal, which is a bulk metallic glass. Going glass only would be nothing new. Hell the S7 series is made of glass. Liquidmetal, I imagine, will look and feel different than glass.

This leaves me with several questions.

Will this redesign mean no more home button? (I hope so.) Touch ID will be featured in the screen itself.

What will the iPhone 7 feature? Thinner? Same thickness but more battery life? Essentially the iPhone 7, assuming this report comes true, will be a stop gap model to bridge between the 6S series and the new redesign in 2017. Seeing how important the iPhone is to Apple's revenue you must imagine they need to offer something special come fall regardless if the huge changes come in late 2017.

Do we really think that Apple would either (1) not release an updated design for 2016, extending the iPhone 6 design across three years instead of the average 2, or (2) release updated designs in both 2016 and 2017? Both options seem unlikely to me.

That said, I always thought that the glass design was more beautiful on the iPhone than the aluminium design. For one reason or another, while I think the aluminum back of the iPad looks fantastic, it hasn't worked as well for me on the iPhone.

I think they would. Why? 2017 = 10th Anniversary of the iPhone. Probably want to make a big splash next year.

With these rumors in mind, my iPhone 6s Plus purchase will get me by for 2 years easy.

If you accidentally break the glass and jam the razor-like shards into your ears* at least you won't miss the headphone port anymore.:eek:

*seriously, don't really do that.

2017 for OLED model will still be too late.

OLED should be in 2016 models.

The glass must be totally shatter proof.

I love the idea of an all glass, wraparound design.

And good point about haptic feedback buttons, though that would be pretty difficult to implement for volume and power I imagine, they'd probably still go with cutouts with physically movable buttons inserted.

All this makes me think this is the year the tick-tock cycle will end/be broken. We'll get a second tock with price drops and next year a dramatically new design?

I'd love to see the all glass design this year but it doesn't seem likely given the current state of rumours :(
