That should do it! $329, same price as last year model but with retina display and A5X. If not, people flock to nexus 7.

I won't not until android gets real tablet apps. But I do expect: 329, retina, and an A6X at the very least. I'm more in line for the full-sized iPad tho. ;)

One Event

I think the new iPads will be announced alongside the new iPhones. Apple wants to put them in people's minds so they don't buy the Nexus 7 instead.

Dang I was really hoping for an "Early September" release of the iPad 5th gen, per Ming @ KGI Securities..

If the mini goes retina, will it maintain the same ppi as the big ipad or will it have the same resolution?

Same ppi means a roughly 1536x1152 resolution
Same resolution as big ipad is obviously 2048x1536

To qualify as retina, 1536x1152 would suffice, but would cause further fragmentation with other ipads and the iphone. 2048x1536 would be nice but would be a super high ppi, much more than the current retina ppi. In some ways a mini with that kind of ppi would look better than the current ipad retina.

That would be great, but I wonder if that would cannabalize the big ipad more than Apple would want. Apple is good at differentiating their products, so if the new mini is going to go 2048x1536, maybe the full ipad 5 will get a spec bump, resolution bump, screen change, or other new feature that would clearly set it apart from the mini.

What do you think will happen, will the mini have the same ppi as the current retina ipad, or the same resolution?

Is the Mini really that awesome? Wasnt it strange to go from 9,7 inches to 7,9? Thats the only thing that should stop me from buying the Mini.

I've never owned an iPad but I can tell you after playing around with the mini, that is THE size for me. And with the retina on the way, I finally have a good reason to buy one.

Looking forward to the iPad 5. I'd be more excited about the mini if apple actually uses current hardware instead of older specs.

Every ipad has a unique identifier. Similar to iphone, MacBooks etc.
I'm pretty sure the ipad fourth gen is ipad 3,2
There's code in ios 7 that points to the existence of an ipad 4,1 (for example..cant remember the exact number), so an unreleased ipad, but without a retina screen

Sure because the current mini will get updated internals and replace iPad 2 (no more 30 pin connector). Is there a way Apple can hide the existence of a retina mini so it isn't outed via the betas?

I cannot wait to get my hands on an iPad mini with Retina Display! :)

But, I'm also worried for Apple. They are relying on these products, along with the iPhone for much of their revenue, and we know what happened the last time they did that with the Macintosh. :(

The only downside is this new hardware will likely ship with the uglified iOS 7.

At least my current hardware is latest-gen, so I can stay on iOS 6 for quite some time before being tempted to upgrade.

Can hardly wait. Still using an iPad one. About time to make a change.

I am right there with you. And I am thinking there are way more people in that boat than these boards might suggest.

(not everybody needs the latest greatest every single time)

My predictions:

New iPad Retina: $499, etc. A7X, 2 GB RAM
New iPad no retina, no back camera: $379, etc. A7 or A6 1 GB RAM

New iPad mini Retina: $329, etc., A6X 1 GB RAM
New iPad mini no retina, no back camera: $259 A6 1 GB RAM (This is what has caused all the confusion, likely assembled at a different plant)

This is based on what Apple did with the iPod touch line. No more lower priced older versions. Older versions still expensive to make.

Darn it.

The wife is flying to Europe in mid sept, so was going to get a Mini, just before a possible new model!

Had my ipad 2 for over 2 years now and still going strong. I would love the new form factor but other than having something shiny and new, I can't seem to convince myself to buy another :(
