To be honest is losing something as vital as an Ethernet port worth those extra millimetres shaved off?

It's like a DVD drive at this point in my opinion.....you either use it or you don't. I haven't used an ethernet port in YEARS (Literally) except to connect my non-wifi xbox.

Some will miss the ethernet port (and will be very vocal about it), some (myself included) won't even know it's gone.

I don't see why everyone is complaining about no ethernet port... these are PORTABLES... they are not meant to be wired to anything. Ethernet is also still possible using USB. If you want a hardwired cable while your at your desk, you can also use the ethernet port in the thunderbolt display.

Sorry if this has been posted but this rumored release date should include the 13" MBP's as well, right? I'm new here but I have read that the dual core Ivy Bridge should be released in June, which should coincide with the release.

And again, I know this is a rumor, but hypothetically speaking, would the 13" MBP's have retina display as well?

Count yourself out of that group.

Oh, and don't drink any more whine.
This post is so awesome.

Client needs Linksys WiFi router reconfigured. Oops, forgot ethernet dongle adapter. SCREWED.
I just wanted to address this one thing.....Why are you connecting an ethernet cable to a wireless router? You can reconfigure them....wirelessly.

It's funny how you claim some kind of knowledge on the matter using a graphic that also did not display the potential location of a thunderbolt port or any connection for an external display. You guys make too many assumptions based on nothing.

How thin can they make it without compromising its performance?

Smaller than the area of Intels CPUs duh.

----------

This will doom the company. The thinner laptops are worthless overpriced netbooks. Why pay so much money when you can have the same functionality with a $150 netbook?

Already android phones and tablets are driving Apple out of the market, and once they lose the PC market, the company will probably fold up by 2013-14 at the latest.

I SO Hope that was sarcasm, if not you're out of touch with reality and see a shrink.

On the plus side, you'll be able to get gigabit ethernet using a USB 3.0 dongle, which is impossible with USB 2.0. On the current Airs the only way to get gigabit ethernet is via thunderbolt display or some 3rd party docking station.

if apple built a DVD (or blu-ray) drive into their Thunderbolt displays I'd be much happier about them excluding it from the MBP

I am sorry but the only one I see rationalizing here is yourself. :) A useless antiquated technology is the world's standard networking protocol and port? If it's so antiquated what has superseded it? There's nothing even in the horizon about to supersede ethernet in terms of wired networking. Wifi isn't even a consideration in pretty much all corporate, university, small business, conference hall etc. etc. networks, as an adjunct maybe, as a way to connect with any guaranteed reliability, security and speed and do real work (as you would with a pro device like a mbp) it's not even close. If you take your mac to work and access a server as almost everyone working in a corporate, uni or small business environment does you will use ethernet, period. You might get away with wifi sometimes, but your standard practice will be to just wire the computer.

And you are talking about "useless, antiquated technology"? Do you realize, and I am saying this in all good will, what absolute non-sense your are talking just because you apparently like apple so much? Do you realize how close you are to apple claiming the earth is called mars and it's red and you going yeah sure why not.:)

Wifi is replacing ethernet. Less and less people require ethernet each year. It's one reason why iPads and netbooks have become so popular.

Your argument is flawed when you consider that laptops are moble devices. The majority of people purchase a moble device for it's mobility. Why purchase a laptop if you're going to be tethered to your desk to only use a ethernet connection? For the minority of users who may require (or prefer) some form of wired connectivity, Apple will offer an adapter.

I think that's a fair compromise.

I'm definitely excited for this to come out, I'm still running the aluminum 08 model and I'm ready for an upgrade!

So conflicted...

Ok I am going to add my 2 cents to the whole ethernet argument but FIRST can we all just sit back and appreciate how nice it is to get some rumors about actual mac computers for a change?! I don't know about you but considering the fact that for once I am actually in the market for a new machine this is all rather exciting :D

I use ethernet every single day for work and for the record I am NOT a professional. I just happen to use my personal computer for work which is probably not super common but I'm a PhD student and I think many students would be in the same situation. I need ethernet for internet access at the lab (as does everyone else at my lab all of whom bring their own laptops to work). I also need it to access networked storage at work, so the current dongle (usb2 > ethernet) won't cut it. Just wanted to point out for all those being like if you're a professional you should be able to afford blah blah blah...you don't have to be a professional video editor to need an ethernet port.

BUT I am almost 100% sure that apple will finally stop being stupid and offer some kind of high speed adapter and that is fine for me. Yes it is slightly annoying. I already have to remember my useless-mini-DPI > VGA adapter for whenever I need to present a powerpoint. However, I don't think I'll have trouble leaving this future ethernet adaptor at work where I need it.

I really like the idea of having a machine that is not a downgrade (performance wise) that is lighter than my current machine (13inch MBP). I have to lug my machine a 15min walk back and forth to work everyday and then use it for 8-12hrs at a time doing usually rather mundane but sometimes challenging stuff (huge spread sheets, running virtual machines for windows only scientific software, Adobe CS4 etc).

IMHO Apple should keep trying to shove the performance of a Mac Pro into a MBA 11inch. When they get there I will be waiting with my credit card :)

It's not like the current size MBP is so thick that it ever prevents me from taking it anywhere. Is this thinness for the sake of thinness?
After switching to an Air last year and then using my friend's MBP the difference was startling. No way would I ever go back to that brick of a form factor. It's definitely not thinness for the sake of thinness.

Um, no, they wouldn't just make a laptop without Ethernet compatibility. lol

There's a simple USB to Ethernet adapter you can use to connect the MBP to a wired network. They aren't nixing Ethernet, just the Ethernet PORT. And the reason is because of the mammoth size of the thing. You'll still be able to plug your computer into the network... don't know why anyone would imagine otherwise.

Ditching ethernet port from Macbook PRO means more will be forced to consider shelling out a grand for a 27" LCD, aka Apple Thunderbolt Display. Folks I know would rather give up ethernet over external LCD. I would. But since most people won't really give up ethernet, many will be forced to buy a 27" LCD at a grand.

Let's not forget how Apple started removing CD drives and started rolling out App Store & iTunes, both of which Apple can get a cut/commission/tax/extortion.

Brilliant.

Is it likely that the MacBook Airs will get updated as well, even if it's just a minor spec bump? Does Apple usually update its other laptops when they bring out new models?

Also, is this likely to have Mountain Lion or is that much later in the summer?

This just made WWDC much more exciting! I do a lot of Final Cut X, Photoshop and After Effects work on my Mid-2009 13 inch Pro and its getting really bad. It crashed 7 times while working on a FCX project today, so as soon as these things are released, I am buying a maxed out 15 inch (happens to be close to my birthday too) for $2500 :D

That's why most of those people are not buying 15" MBPs. That's why the best sellers are iPads, MBAs, etc.

Look, we are talking about people who either want or need the 15" MBP. Of that population specifically, how many do you honestly think need or depend upon Ethernet and cannot make do with the USB 3 adapters that are likely to be released alongside these new Retina MBPs? Give me an estimate or approximation, of what you think this population might be. Then tell me if it's really worth designing the new Retina MBPs with them first in mind.

You go too far to say one group is gaining priority over another and you also ask an impossible task for estimation of such a number. Neither you nor me are in a place to be able to quantify that. And its not a matter of priority, its a matter of balance. Just because 51% of people want X and 49% don't want X, that doesn't mean the smart choice would be to not include X. That can call go for 99% and 1%. It depends on the cost/benefit ratio. Ethernet is practically free monetarily and only adds a small amount of thickness. So the benefit to removing it is small, while the draw backs of removing for those that need it are cumbersome and potentially not cheap. You also improperly restrict the potential user base to some group that wants or needs a 15" MBP. That's a moving target depending on what the MBP is, and we happen to be talking about what the MBP should become.

No, they'll have Lion, why else bring Retina graphics to Lion?
