Analysts

Analysts predict a new Apple laptop that is thinner with a faster processor by the end of 2015. I have other predictions of things that will happen by the end of 2015:

  • They will come out with a new iPhone
  • They will come out with a new iPad
  • They will release a new version of OSX and a new version of iOS
  • New Years day will occur, along with two solstices
  • It will rain somewhere on Earth

Your move, analysts.

I wish people would stop complaining about Apple going thin. I for one appreciate the work that goes into devices that are easier to use because of their lightness and thinness. I went from a 2008 MacBook Air to a 2013 Macbook Pro Retina and the Macbook Pro is so much heavier, its almost a chore to pickup compared to the MBA. Ok you pay a price for the power of the rMBP, but my next laptop will be an Air I think

Thin is great, but at this point you have to consider two things:

  1. Is it even noticeable making it slightly thinner than it was before?
  2. Is it worth the potential battery life and/or performance hit to make it thinner?

Also—a chore to pick up? Do you even lift? :D

From a design standpoint, they seem to be approaching a physical limit with an Aluminum unibody design, for acceptable rigidity. Any thinner, it seems they would have to consider a harder metal or alloy. Titanium unibody MacBook Air. Sounds nice, gonna be pricey.

My speculation....

1. This new 12" retina MacBook, closer to the size of the current 11" MBA, with a skinnier bezel and a new design language. (I'm guessing this screen will also be used in the alleged iPad Pro.) I bet this will push the boundaries of what ports a consumer laptop has...SD card? maybe not. Lightning instead of Magsafe/Thunderbolt? Only 1 USB? What about a second Lightning rather than audio out/in? The product seems queued up for late 2014/early 2015. I bet it'll initially live next to the current MBA lineup, until.....

2. A similarly styled 14" retina Macbook, more "Pro", probably not discreet graphics but Thunderbolt so it'd be a bit thicker than the 12" above. Size wize it'll be close to the 13" MBP and MBA, replacing them both but thin like the 12". At this time Apple will end the 11" MBA and hang on to the 13" MBA as the value machine. Let's guess mid 2015 on this guy, WWDC time frame.

3. Released at the same time, a 16" retina Macbook, replaces the 15" in size and yet gives the 83 or so people out there clamoring for the return of the 17" something to praise. This one would be the most Pro...but still thin and light. Again, WWDC time frame.

So by middle of 2015, all current MBA's & MBP's are obsoleted, replaced by this new thin and sexy Macbook something, all retina, 12", 14" & 16". All Intel inside regardless of how tempting an A8 based machine might sound.

I'm getting tired of all these Apple will be launching this or that later this year or next year stories. They need to start launching crap already. Piss or get off the toilet!

I hope it releases before christmas cause I'm travelling to the US in december and I'm looking to upgrade my 2010 Macbook pro

Don't really care about thinner

Thin is overrated. I don't really give a crap. What I do want is my 17" display back. Or at least make a Thunderbolt display that's close to 20 inches.

Why? - is all that comes to mind. Apple needs to work on 100% reliability of some of the core applications and not on fancy design that is starting to border on the impractical. I don't need a smaller thinner laptop and a bigger thinner phone. What I need is a Safari browser that doesn't hang, wifi connections that reconnect right away and reliable messaging and email services with 100% Exchange server support.

I'm waiting for the Macbook 2D. It will be completely two dimensional and the thinnest Macbook ever!

These will be nice and thin and portless.

Essentially, an iPad with a keyboard that runs OS X.

Useful for some (maybe even most people), but I guess I'm old-school.

No thanks.

I'll keep rocking my 17" for the foreseeable future no matter what happens.

The logic board went out on it and cost ~$300 to repair. Gladly paid the non-appliance tax.

While I was at the Apple Store picking it up, many came by saying "WoW! That's nice! What model is that?

----------

What are we losing for this thinness?

All ports, except maybe TB?

So perhaps the end of the year will be a good chance to get a non-retina MBP at a good price.

They are honestly fast and slim enough for my needs, I can get lots of storage for cheap and the RAM is upgradable. Still seems like the best deal to me.

Clearly the new Air has been designed around Broadwell. It'll launch as soon as Intel can make sufficient supplies of Broadwell chips available to Apple.

What is the point of a 12 inch macbook? It is not much different from a 13 inch macbook. And enough ewith the thinness. Whenever I use ab air I already feel like I'm going to break it in half.

Apple needs to offering matte screen options. I already get bad glaring on my non retina mbp. I can only imagine how worse the glaring will be on a mbp retina

Yep!

Great machine, and I think it unfortunate that Apple hasn't updated the processor and integrated graphics. Some of my work requires ethernet and optical drive, and it's a nuisance having to use dongles. That, to me, defeats the purpose of having an all-in-one laptop.

wow that was a baseless waffle rumour!

12 inch macair has been vapour for over a year now. Seems like no one actually knows when it'll arrive.
