Apple is close to signing 21-year-old Raheem Sterling, a skilled forward for Premier League's Manchester City F.C. and England's national football team, as a global ambassador, according to British newspaper The Sun.

Sterling, who has not played since suffering a groin injury in a match against Manchester United on March 20, will join the likes of American professional tennis player Serena Williams, FC Barcelona forward Neymar, and Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry as brand ambassadors for Apple.

Sterling will earn around £250,000 per year from the deal, which is contingent upon him returning from injury in time for the Euro 2016 championship in France. Fortunately, his imminent return appears likely, as local media reports claim the winger could resume play as early as this weekend versus Chelsea.

The report claims that Sterling "has been lined up to be the figure-head of Apple's promotional work around the European Championship this summer," which could involve Apple or Beats television commercials and product endorsement, predominantly in the United Kingdom. Euro 2016 takes place between June 10 and July 10.

Nice for him... but I'll never really understand the mentality of otherwise unconnected companies wanting to sponsor or associate themselves with sports people in one team that has lots of rivalry. I mean in this case it might be great for Man City or England fans, but considering all the passionate supporters of any other club or national team, it risks putting far more people off rather than it encourages them to think kindly towards your brand, IMHO.

I can't help but think that 250,000 pounds per year could be better spent on just about anything else other than making this guy a "brand ambassador". But hey, it's Apple's money so they can spend it however they'd like.

Supposedly Sharp ended their shirt sponsorship of Manchester United when a Sharp executive proudly talked about the deal when he found out the person he was speaking to was a Manchester City fan, thinking there was an affinity because they were both Manchester football clubs. The reply was "And that is why I refuse to have any Sharp products in my house".

There is a lot of rivalry in football. This deal stands to lose Apple customers from fans of rivals Manchester United, and Liverpool who Sterling left on bad terms. Two of the biggest supported clubs in the UK.

It's clear should they choose sterling they don't understand the English premiere league. The public by and large hate this guy in the UK for mistreating his former team, to a point where everyone had sympathy for them, and mucking about whining, conning, and generaply being a tit as he acted completely unprofessional and childlike despite his already massive wage earnings. I can't imagine sterling being chosen right now, it would be so stupid to choose him of all the available players given he's so polarizing, no not polarizing, everyone hate him for being a completely spoiled self centered arrogant twit.

'Oh well at least they didn't choose Adam Johnson from Sunderland (google it but hit at work) that's literally the only player who would be a worse choice for this

You guys complaining about Apple choosing this young sterling. But you forget the more world known players probably charge 2x-4x more. They already have Neymar so this is backup guy fill other areas since he is black, Jamaican and plays in England. That is a big demographic they are going for by choosing him. Or at least that is what th accounts at Apple hq are thinking. Lol

Oh Dear Apple. Not an ideal player to choose imho. If you want a better player for Euro 2016, why not go for someone like Gareth Bale, Benzema, Muller or even Lewandowski for christ sake!

A few things confuse me here.
Why would Sterling take a measly 250k I thought he was a money man, that's just a week and a bit wages.

Why football? Eurgh!

I would of said Anthony Joshua or the guy from Star wars both are on the rise.

The Olympic lady who was/is on the Gadget show or one of Britain's loved cyclists would have been a great fit.

Sterling I just don't get it especially at the Pound land price.

Probably because Benzema won't be playing at Euro 2016 and is facing a court case for trying to blackmail Valbuena.

Fortunately, I live in the US so your "Football" essentially doesn't exist for me. <dons flame retardant virtual suit and prepares for attacks>

Never sure exactly what these brand ambassadors actually do.

For future reference MR, The Sun is not a reliable source for anything.
