I love futbol (#1) but it will always be behind mlb, nba and nfl in the US. Even w the population movement and increasing of minority which tend to play and watch soccer.

The NBA may be a push, but lacrosse and soccer are killing baseball at the youth and high school levels. That will continue to perpetuate and be a trend.

You of course are quite right. 89 minutes of endlessly passing a ball with your feet without being able to score any points is a riveting afternoon. It's no wonder that everyone goes insane when a ball manages to somehow slip in there. Unfortunately, it always happens while I am draining the spit from my vuvuzela.

But seriously, I have no problem with it being the most popular sport in the world or taking off in the US, but I've seen plenty of games (we have the Real in SLC) and my brother-in-law is from Mexico and often invites me to come watch important games with him, but it's just not going to take for me. I'll stick with my "throw" football.
I would suggest last night Liverpool vs Dortmund

Regarding Apple's choice... they could have done a lot better. Going after an EPL player is a good idea because everybody around the Continent that likes football follows the EPL. But they could have chosen a lot better starting with City's own players.

I'm not sure what the big deal is? Plenty of the bigger players jump across to other clubs these days, unfortunately it's a part of our game now, I guess Apple could have picked Delph, now he really did treat his old club bad.

For £250,000 Apple could have got better for their money, I'm a Newcastle United fan and Wonga pay is £2.5m a year to be our shirt sponsor, Apple could have invested better in a team like us. Ok so we arn't going to be a Premier League club next year, but theirs still plenty of clubs who accept around that a year for shirt sponsorship and that would have Apple's brand seen a lot more around the world and more often.

Laughable. Newcastle is too small for Apple to put their logo on their shirts.

When we get relegated we will be, but any club in the Premier League would be big enough for Apple, think about the world wide coverage the Premier League gets every week, then on top of that you have cup games, these days most Premier League clubs have pre-season camps abroad.

You are not a premier league club. You are down.

Well I know that, I was using us as an example of how cheap it would be for Apple to sponsor a Premier League club, theirs other clubs there that will take a low fee for shirt sponsorship as well.

Sterling is a strange choice: two assault charges against him, both of which my$teriou$ly di$$apeared in court, and still far too prone to injury for anyone to know if he'll fulfil his potential. His agent (Aidy Ward) is a proper Arthur Daley character and obviously did a very good job of selling him. That said, without knowing the details of Sterling's contractual commitments to Apple, they got him cheaply. I can't imagine Harry Kane, for example, getting out of bed for a paltry £5k a week.

Football teams are divisive things, as others have said. If you look at the list of current Premier League shirt sponsors there is one carmaker and one beer brand, and neither sponsorship is aimed at the UK market. To me this suggests that football is *not* an effective way of flogging branded goods. I know many people who try to avoid certain consumer electronics and beer brands because of their association with particular football teams, years after those sponsorship deals have expired. Hell, I still won't voluntarily drink Holsten Pils, and my resistance to Samsung products largely stems from their past association with a small club in Fulham...

Really. So because I hate Chelsea I would not buy a Samsung tv. Laughable if you can't back it up.

You wrote your comment like you were sure he was guilty of assault. That's why I asked you that question. Why should Apple care about his move to Manchester? As a gooner you should be more worried about Wenger being your manager.

After reading your other replies in the thread I can see that you're just not very bright (City fan I suppose), but I'll try once more - if you have to ask yourself "Is my Brand Ambassador guilty of these accusations that he's assaulted women on multiple occasions?" then from a PR standpoint it doesn't matter whether he's guilty or not - he should not be representing your brand. There's "guilty" in the criminal sense and then there's "guilty" in the public conscience - someone with such allegations in the recent past should not be considered for a new business relationship where their primary function is to represent your brand. That he sucks and is like the 7th best player on his own club (and that's possibly being generous) is only further reason not to associate yourself with him if you're Apple, there are loads of better choices available.

Are they? Highest growth does not equate size. If there was 1 person playing and now there are 4 it makes it 300% increase but it's still a low number.
The leagues for the more played games are already set and are played by almost everyone so you can't make them grow Vs less played sports which have more schools in which to start playing and creating new leagues. Plus the us soccer teams pay little compared to their global counterparts so it's not enticing as much as an mlb or nba contract for the very good sport high school player that wants to make it in sports.

Here Are some googled numbers: http://www.infoplease.com/us/education/most-popular-high-school-sports.html

My only 'back up' is the absence of manufacturers of tangible goods from the list of current Premier League shirt sponsors. At the lower end of the division, sponsorships are dominated by dodgy offshore betting companies. Given that two thirds of the clubs in the PL would bite your arm off for £10m a year, why do you think that electronics, white goods, vehicle manufacturers etc aren't interested?

And yes: a Samsung product has to work very hard to overcome my Chelseaphobia.

This is all something of a digression from the Sterling story, of course. I don't believe personal deals have anything like the same impact as shirt sponsorship. It just means that next time he's appearing in court, or is photographed with a shisha pipe, he'll be contractually obliged to be wearing Beats.

Sterling is known for being an overpaid brat - a perfect example of how you can corrupt young people by making them millionaires so suddenly. Not sure he's really the kind of brand ambassador they want; he's probably not even in the starting 11 for England in the Euros.

They'd be better-off going for somebody with a good attitude like Harry Kane or Jamie Vardy. They are the kind of players you want to be associated with for this competition, not Raheem flipping Sterling!

That data completely leaves out certain things. For example, in football and baseball, the number is virtually unchanged. So, no more or less kids are playing it, right? It's more stark than that.

There are over 40,000 more male soccer players in that data. Do you think a soccer player is a more - or less - capable overall athlete? Soccer and lacrosse are taking skilled, fast players from other sports. Football and baseball are getting watered down talent-wise because of it.

Also, I used to run a large soccer club in Ohio. We grew the club from 18 to 72 teams in 6 years, and it's only the 3rd biggest club in Cincinnati. Almost all new city and county sports complexes feature many more soccer and lacrosse facilities than baseball fields. In fact, long term plans have been modified in several counties to eliminate new baseball fields from the plan and add soccer space.

Believe me, baseball as a primary American sport is on the way out. Sure, it may be a hit in many cities at the college and MLB levels for years to come, but the US is not producing most of the top talent anymore.

Pretty sure this is a Beats deal.
They do this at every major sporting tournament / event. Sign up huge superstars for an ad campaign. Remember the World Cup one? I think some journalists has got their wires crossed and forgot that Apple owns Beats.

You are the one that's not bright to think Apple signed a guy without doing their own research on character and how they think he can help their brand. David Beckham was never the best player in the world, yet he had the most endorsement.

How does the number of points per score effect the game? I've seen far more dull and boring Handegg games compared to Football games over the years.

"There are only more points in handegg because you need big numbers to keep the limited attention span of the mass population" /s

It maybe 89 minutes of stalemate, but at least it's just that 89 minutes, not 5 hours to play an hours worth of sport, because they can't take the pace.

I guess that's what's great about a world full of choices. I was going to say "that's what makes horse races" but I didn't want to open up a whole other "sport" to debate over. :D

I don't think Apple would ever sponsor a sports team. I don't know why they bother with those stupid celebrity ads. If they want to remain "cool" they don't need celebrity endorsements they just need to spend more time updating their product designs, add more colour options and add more accessories. Look how "cool" those colourful iPods were back in the day. For example, why is there still no Product Red iPhone or iPad? That would surely sell well and make some money for a good cause at the same time. Apple could do with some good PR to alleviate the image that they're just money grabbing middle class white folk.

I disagree but I hope to be wrong.
Just remember the story about buying a new yellow car and suddenly you start seeing all the yellow cars around that you didn't see before you owned said car.
Also don't forget that most that watch games don't play the game in leagues etc.

First I was quite disappointed about this, I mean how could Apple consider one of the least liked players in the UK? He's more know for smoking pipes and acting like a spoiled brat, than his footballing abilities. Then I saw it was reported by the Sun, so the credibility of the story is none. Shame on you Macrumors, should know better than that.
