I really don't want to see Apple profit from porn. Sure, you can get porn on Safari on the iPad. But a porn app is putting money directly into the pockets of Apple (and its shareholders). There was an article in the LA Times about several porn actors recently testing positive for HIV. Apple does not need to make money from an industry where potential exposure to a fatal disease is part of the job description for its employees.

Not Happy!

Part of Apple's success is staying away from porn, at least in my opinion.
I know, Playboy is not exactly porn, but this is how it starts...

I agree that Playboy is not porn. I still think the way Playboy treats women is nasty but you're right, it isn't porn. Most of the discussion on here has been more widely about porn in general.

That is a good question though. I don't know if I could put into words what the difference is. I know it when I see it though. What would you say it was?

I would classify pornography as when there is penetration by means of just about anything and also displaying a sexual act. If you're just showing a few pictures (lets admit it the majority of a Playboy magazine is ads and articles) then this really isn't porn but mostly nudity with no penetration.

As amused as ever by protests over nudity, when the app store is full of games (i.e. apps) based entirely around killing people. I applaud Apple for loosening their inappropriate moral shackles.

I always love these issues, as it brings out the thoughtless in droves.

Anyone who uses the following phrase needs to pause:
"Patents are dumb/stupid/hypocritical."
Parents are average. Your disagreement about moral valuations do not constitute an intellectual insight on your part nor a deficiency on anyone elses.

"People in X country are dumb/stupid/hypocritical."
Countries are not monolithic. On intelligence they are average, on education they are average. Guess what Europeans - you are not that smart. You just, for reasons no one else in the world can figure, have started to think you are. As for the people in a country dogging on your own country...your just deluding yourself that you are above average. Remember, your disagreement about moral valuations do not constitute an intellectual insight on your part nor a deficiency on anyone elses. Unless you are still in high school or never went to a good college or never decided to expand your mind, then go ahead and think that because nothing can change your mind. And remember not to vote.

Remember whenever you think someone who who disagrees with you about political/social/moral issues is stupid...uh oh...you are are not using your brain. They may be ignorant, but by and large we are all relatively ignorant outside our spheres of expertise. Why do ignorant people argue with each other about the relative social impact of viewing nudity as a way of arguing for the social impact of widespread pornography is beyond me. Maybe it is fun. Maybe that is why we have the internet!

As for the issue at hand...pornography is widely available and I hope that Apple continues to allow those who are interested to use technology to tailor the experience of themselves and those for whom they have a legal and moral obligation to.

I assume you are American? If not, then you may ignore this post.

I do not mean to insult you or anyone else on this forum, but I think we should all be able to agree that an American complaining about how "someone from "X"-location thinks they're so much better than everyone else" is pretty darn ironic and hilarious.

This. The multi-decade old debate over America's odd moral grasp on the rest of the world needs to end.

(the above statement is a broad generalisation.)

You sound like Janeane Garofalo, blaming disagreement with your views on deep psychological or personal problems, instead of addressing the substance of the opposing view itself.

Look, you need to learn that correlation doesn't equal causation. Sexual addiction is not in existance because of porn necessarily nor would the lack of porn completely remove sexual addiction from society.

The simple fact is some humans have addictive psychological profiles. Porn, gambling, alcohol, drugs, it doesn't matter, they will get addicted. The solution is not to punish everyone else by banning anything and everything that could lead to some guy with a penchant for addiction to having problems.

Porn it and of itself is not a problem for the vast majority of people who consume it. I dare you to show sources pointing otherwise.

Since I was careful about framing my comments in reference to negative attributions and not positive I think their amusement might be ironic. Everyone thinks their place is the best, don't they? Which is neither here nor there.

Whats people's problem with porn being more accessible on the iPad?
It's not like anyone has to view it, it's a choice to view porn.

The only problem with this is that it may not be available for the iPhone, though I suspect it will. Apple will soon learn to allow porn apps, and I think a good way of restricting it is by going of the age you have on your iTunes account.

with kids I mean 4/5 year olds...;)

just see it...your little girl uses the last app with barbie...on the iPad...
and hits app store where you have PlayBoy...

you are on the phone...and cannot do anything becauseyou are not in the room.,.
What if your little girl uses the internet and types in barbie into google, what do you think is going to turn up?

I think people here and in this generation in general, don't realize how much damage this stuff can have on kids and teens, especially later when they try to have a normal relationship.
It's been scientifically proven that folks who consumed stuff like this (actually the more harder stuff) fail to have a normal love life.

PS: I don't think violence and blood in TV shows and movies are much better...

Yes you can go on and flame me about my post.

Well first you'll have to define "normal love life" and prove that what one individual or like minded group of individuals considers normal is the only acceptable definition. Is it normal to have oral sex? Or does refusing to perform such an act send the message that you don't love your partner? I think you'll find huge numbers of people on both sides of those and many other questions making it impossible to define "normal".

America is truly a strange place where the average child will have seen dozens of murders before she's 10 years old, but is told that viewing naked bodies is evil.

There will always be a significant demand for nude images. Thus there will always be great riches to be reaped by meeting that demand. Right minded people should encourage the small fraction of the industry that treats their models like human beings.

Those who think that persecuting Playboy will make porn go away are morons who cannot see that they are responsible for increases in human trafficking. The money is out there and if places like Playboy aren't getting it then it's flowing to someone else, someone who probably locks their models in cells, drugs them, assaults them, trades them like cattle and finally dumps their drug addicted bodies on the street when they get too old.

Prohibition does not work. It makes unscrupulous people rich and innocent people into victims.

Already Allowed

Apple already allows Adult Content on the iPad. There are around a dozen web browsing apps in the App store that you have to (claim to) be over 17 to download and use. Then just enter your favorite URL.

That's the same thing as Safari.

My parents actually knew what I was doing and wouldn't let me access stuff that they thought was inappropriate. Why can't these kids' parents prevent them looking at Playboy the old fashioned way?? Oh the horror, they have to tell Little Johnny NO

Why does everything have to be child friendly these days and why is it any company's responsibility to do so? Not everything was meant for children and I'll bet there will be parental setting where Playboy can be blocked

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/8B117)

Really? How many minors have iPads?

I wrote a Tumblr browsing app for the iPad. (Tumblerscape).

The app has a "4+" rating. Just like the official Tumblr app.

And yet it appears that some images on Tumblr are not really 4+.

Sometimes I wonder how many people here are functionally literate people, that actually READ a post before assuming & making fools out of themselves?

I quote "While Playboy has had an official App Store app, the app has been content restricted and contains no nude images."

If there's no nudity, then it's not porn.

Content restricted? Thats no surprise.

It just proves my earlier point that this publication will be filtered & censored. Sure it's not the only biased "news rag out there, but Apple is quite the formidable dictator.
