I think people here and in this generation in general, don't realize how much damage this stuff can have on kids and teens, especially later when they try to have a normal relationship.
It's been scientifically proven that folks who consumed stuff like this (actually the more harder stuff) fail to have a normal love life.

Correlation does not mean causality. And if there is causality, has it been proven which direction it goes?

God, all kids have to do is google "porn" and they have more than they could ever look at in a lifetime, much easier than buying/downloading an iPad app.

Yes you can go on and flame me about my post.

I actualy think not being ashamed of your sexualety (and having a partner that issent) is a hugh benefit for a good relationship. As long as you still go out, flirt and have a sexlife that is away from magazins and screens you will do fine.

The idea of sex being a private think you do in the dark under the covers of your bed only after you have been married and banning nudety in genneral is a very christian idea that was forced brutaly on humanety just about 2000-2500 years ago during the roman empire.
That actualy a lifestile that causes depression, because of sexualety playing a very important part in evolution for a very very very long time there is a hugh mental benefit for actualy having a good fun sexlife.

Seeing sex, exploring sex (even at a young age, look at history how normal it was) yourself in several hard and soft directions is nothing bad.

Fiduciary Responsibility

This is a smart move. Not allowing erotica was leaving money on the table, which was a violation of Apple management's fiduciary duty to its shareholders.

So, in all seriousness, really? I don't see how you can support such a position. There are many countries where children are exposed to "this stuff" and people in these countries are able to have normal, healthy relationships. Example, in Austria there are pictures of naked women in ads, normal tv stations have porn on them, and brothels are not that uncommon. However, the divorce rate is 46% (link). That isn't any higher than in the States, where a 50% divorce rate is often given.

I think if you really want kids to grow up and have healthy relationships, then sex shouldn't be something that is seen as taboo or wrong, but instead they need to be able to approach it rationally and logically. This comes through good parenting and discussions with the child.

As far as the iPad is concerned, they can already get porn on it with the internet. This opens up nothing new to them. Personally, I don't care about this app, but I don't understand the big opposition to it.

Also, since you said it has been "scientifically proven" that people who look at this stuff can't have a normal relationship, can you actually cite the study?

I really want to see apple s reaction...

this is so bad news....

Not get me rong I live in Italy and the girls are fantastic...:D

But ipads are also for kids...:(

Unfortunately I forsee bad things if Steve leaves...

No one said it would be open season for Porn on the iPad... which, like many have pointed out already is... if a kid wants to view porn these days it takes about 2 seconds with a web browser and you can see some very sick stuff. It's the reality of the internet. At least PB is somewhat tasteful porn and I'm sure it's not going to be easy to get at without some sort of age verification.

OK.
Even though my question was removed by the mods I'll ask again.

Do you have a link or source for that scientifically proven claim of yours?

What's the big deal. There is already porn on the iPad. There are plenty of adult sites out there which have iPad compatible content (pics and video). Apple is just late to the party.

with kids I mean 4/5 year olds...;)

just see it...your little girl uses the last app with barbie...on the iPad...
and hits app store where you have PlayBoy...

you are on the phone...and cannot do anything becauseyou are not in the room.,.

This is what happens when Tim Cook gains greater power! Haha, j/k ;)

Surprising if true, especially given current App Store guidelines, but I think this points toward App Store changes in a forthcoming iOS revision. It could be that Apple has came up with a way that works sufficiently well as an age verification scheme other than a "Are you 18 years old?" question that you can say "Yes" to. So that Apple feels that they're going to have a better defense against scared parents.

Maybe a more streamlined experience from the point of purchase to a new "app lock" feature that is enforced for adult apps and not optional.

Seems like quite an unusual about-face from Apple... I wonder if it's just a Playboy app which lets you log into an iPad formatted version of the website? That would make more sense to me given Apple's previous stance on the matter.

Now Offering

Not they will be offering, Apple's Glass Cleaner... :D

It's a great idea, they are letting go of some of their "demands" per say and maybe they are seeing how much more money can be made because us Americans are porn freaks.

The Heff is showing his age. Playboy has not been relevant for decades and I don't know ANYONE who still pays for porn!

Ahh, the internets.:D

"kbai Steve!"

2 days later...

"He's back home now, let's free up some restrictions. Which one to start with first...??"

Mixed feelings about this move. With proper enforcement of the restrictions that parents can set up (and then lock) in the Settings app, this shouldn't be a big deal. Arguably, Safari and other apps give access to worse than what you'll see in the fairly-tame Playboy. But let even one cover or image slip through while those restrictions are on and AAPL will be in some nasty legal battle, I'd bet. I trust their engineers, testers, and planners will get it right, though.

A non issue. iOS had parental controls already built in. I see no reason why magazines like this won't be built to use those.

The reason this is excellent is that this shows that Apple is viewing iPad magazines as being equal to web newspapers and NOT equal to iOS apps.

That's fantastic news.

Apple can cut back on porn apps in their app store and survive, I think. I DON'T think they can heavily censor the web (safari), books (in iBooks), or iPad Magazines if they want to stay out ahead of all these other tablets coming out. Looks like they agree.

Citation needed.

Not that you're coming back to this thread to even reply.

Well the answer's right in the part you quoted. "Actually the more harder stuff."

So, duh, yeah there's stuff out there that's damaging and there is proof of that. But, of course, that's not what Playboy is.

What a great argument that was, huh? 'This is bad 'cause different things that aren't this are bad!'

Uh huh...
