Just another way to make money, under the pretence of saving the environment.
Or just another way to save the environment with the side effect of making money. Either way, it does both (where "save" in this context means help some things a bit).

So we now have to order a new cable, a new plug and a new pair of ear phones
Or use your existing cable, existing or literally any standard USB-C plug, and existing earphones.

well you might not be able to use your existing plug if it doesn't have a USC-C connector on it.

the iphone currently ships with a lightning to USB-C port, and the vast majority of charging plugs out there will have a USB-A connector.

so you either need to by a lightning to USB-A cable, or a power plug with a USB-C connector.

and Apple know this, so they are then able to milk more money out of the new iphone owner.

Nice! Politicians and mega companies collaborating to save costs with the excuse of environment! Wow.
This is a net negative for the environment, as it will only encourage sales of Airpods, which has limited shelf life due to battery and not repairable (thus more likely to be tossed away).

you've missed the point of the post you were replying to.

the point being that it's entirely possible you that DON'T have an existing cable or any USB-C plug, so tha vast majority of plugs will be USB-A.

but you knew that anyway, didn't you.

is it saving the environment? really?
1 box with a phone, plug and cable in it.

or 3 items individually boxed.

These were always a toss aside item for me, so meh.

Besides, I’m not buying an iPhone in France anytime soon. I buy all my iPhones when touring other parts of Europe at least 2 times a year.

No, I don’t tour Europe. But I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night…

Yes because it’s not three items individually boxed. It’s one item for most people. Most people in 2022 already have an iPhone and charger.
It would be nice if Apple would include an "OPT-IN" to request a lightning to 3.5mm adapter when every iPhone is purchased. Or provide the earbuds if requested when purchasing a new iPhone.

It doesn't need to be in retail packaging, just the adapter or earbuds themselves in a recyclable zip lock bag.

You don't have to provide them for everyone, just the people who ask for them when they purchase their new iPhone.

Oh and the USB-C charging brick too.

one can only wish.

That would require a separate package for the iPhone includes those items. So every iPhone would have to have a two additional packaging versions to include the charging brick or EarPods or both.

Unless you’re talking about including them separately packaged when you can already do that just add them to cart.

If you’re talking about Apple including them for free that would not work because human nature is people will take whatever they can get for free even though it’s completely useless to them. You could have the option to include the old 30 pin cable for free and people would request it. Even though it would be ewaste out of the box, people won’t turn down a free item.

Most people would only need one box though, the phone, as they’d already have the cable and plug.

any stats to back up the claim that "most" will already a power plug with a USB-C connector on it?

the lightning to USB-C cable is irrelevant as that is already included in the phone box.

read my post again.

one more thing gone from the box

and the price stays the same.

Another Tim Cook make more money idea. give em less and keep the price the same.

"and the price stays the same."

Helping to allow the retail price to stay the same. Even though manufacturing and component prices, direct and overhead costs (salaries, etc) for Apple have increased.

You can use a type A plug and lighting cable too. I’d say most people buying an iPhone will already have at least a type A plug and lighting cable, and some will have a USBC plug to use the included cable.

again, "most" people.. any stats to back that up?

most will have a USB-A power plug, but not necessasrily the cable, as the iphone ships with a USB-C cable.

by "most" you are actually meaning people upgrading from an older iphone model.
you are excluding everyone that is upgrading to an iphone from another mobile device. those are most likely to have a power plug with a USB-A port, meaning the cable shipped with the iphone is useless. they either need to purchase a different cable or a different power plug.

I kinda like EarPods, sue me ?
Although I do have some unused, as I tend to be very careful with my headphones and they last me for several iPhones.
I am also careful with my headphones, though, as I am even more careful with my iPhone, my 6s has already lasted several EarPods. ?

or buying an iPhone for the first time.......?

You know, like.... the fact that other human beings exist and are at different ages and stages of life and all.....

is it actually increasing though?
one would hope that actually their manufacturing and build costs should decrease over time.

if it's not decreasing over time then they are doing something wrong.
