I would love to see the statistics on that "most people".Yes because it’s not three items individually boxed. It’s one item for most people. Most people in 2022 already have an iPhone and charger.
That would require a separate package for the iPhone includes those items. So every iPhone would have to have a two additional packaging versions to include the charging brick or EarPods or both.
Unless you’re talking about including them separately packaged when you can already do that just add them to cart.
If you’re talking about Apple including them for free that would not work because human nature is people will take whatever they can get for free even though it’s completely useless to them. You could have the option to include the old 30 pin cable for free and people would request it. Even though it would be ewaste out of the box, people won’t turn down a free item.
Eventually they’ll just give us a thousand dollar cardboard box and claim that most of their customers already have an iPhone anyway ?
What people say in these forms isn’t the same thing as what happens at the Apple store or any other store. A good example is the iPhone mini. With the interest shown in these forms one might think that should be the number one selling iPhone. It’s barely selling. As other users here on the forum have stated, they wouldn't take them. They already have them. (few of them in drawers never used)
its the sales/retail job to qualify/listen/wait for the customer to bring the issue up, then allow that customer to "OPT-IN" or "request complementary".
It reduces e-waste. I never said it was a pure 100% fix.
I've received a few iPod replacements under warranty from my local Apple store that came in plain Jane cardboard boxes.
I'm not going to complain, criticize, or get mad at the packaging for something that is free, that I will use.
To be completely factual,Why can't it be both for the environment and for financial purposes? Also, how do you know Apple didn't drop the price? If a product is more expensive to develop and manufacture, leaving out extras (e.g., headphones) and not increasing the price is the same as dropping the price, especially with inflation. Maybe this is a way for Apple to increase profits but we do not know for sure without having access to all their financial information. This isn't a comment about whether or not Apple's margins are appropriate. I'm simply pointing out that we cannot assume $700 == $700 == $700 for both Apple and us over time.
The $650 iPhone 4s (2011) is $800 in 2021 U.S. dollars. The iPhone 13 Mini is the closest to the iPhone 4s (from a "flagship" perspective). It's $700. The larger iPhone 13 is $800. The 13 Pro starts at $1000. The iPhone SE is $400. Altogether, iPhones are both more expensive and cheaper than they've ever been.
Could Apple cut prices by $20 across the board? Yes, but it's possible they already did by not increasing prices by $20 across the board.
So do I. I still use them on my computer and carry a set in my bag; with the appropriate dongle. ?I kinda like EarPods, sue me ?
Although I do have some unused, as I tend to be very careful with my headphones and they last me for several iPhones.
I have some large number of lightning cables (20?) from over the past 10+ years. I think a total of 3 have frayed enough to have gone bad. Most are still in great shape.Do they? I still have my iPhone 5 lightning cable here.
I also recently threw away a load of charging bricks as I had so many in the drawer.
Nearly no one is getting their first smartphone now.
But you don’t just need a USBC charger to charge an iphone. If you are coming from an iPhone which came with a USBA cable and charger you can continue to use that with your new iPhone.I would love to see the statistics on that "most people".
When was the last time the iPhone came with a USB C charger again? If the consumer happened to skip those years of the iPhone, then that means the consumer don't have the charger from the iPhone, wouldn't it?
Last time I checked, it was only the iPhone 11 year that came with a 18W USB C block (not the 20W).
If you skipped that model phone you’re still fine. You can still use the charger that came with an iPhone 5 on an iPhone 13.I would love to see the statistics on that "most people".

Absolutely there are, but do they or do they not make up the bulk of people buying iPhones?so there are no children growing up to the age where they get their first smartphone?
I’m sure there is and that small percentage of the market goes out and buys a charging adapter or maybe get a hand me down from their parents.so there are no children growing up to the age where they get their first smartphone?

The fact is people just won’t turn down free stuff. You didn’t see people leaving their chargers at the Apple store when they already had one and it was included. “Oh just leave this here and if somebody needs it they can have it”. Things that were never said. Unfortunately it’s just human nature. I remember being offered free can cozies and I’ve taken them. I’ve never used a can cozy in my life so I’m sure they ended up in some landfill. For it to work there would have to have enough cost associated with it so the customer has to decide if it’s worth spending money as in do they really need it.
Refurbished MacBooks come in plain white boxes I think. I’m not saying they couldn’t come up with some sort of packaging but it wouldn’t be a Ziploc bag. Perhaps it could be a cheap cardboard box I don’t know I’m sure Apple could figure that out.
I think you’re onto something that perhaps if they package these items in some sort of commercial packaging and had them available at least customers would have a choice to get them without the retail package waste.
I hate to say it but if you really like wired headphones you might consider buying a few pair now because I suspect within five or so years your choices are going to be very limited.
And to add to that point, Apple stopped including the brick in the 11 NOW, while it came with the phone in 2019.If you skipped that model phone you’re still fine. You can still use the charger that came with an iPhone 5 on an iPhone 13.
Only the cable that comes with the iPhone 13 won’t work without a USB-C charging brick. I think it was a mistake for Apple to include that.
Requesting them would just be some sort of checkbox on the online order unless you make people go through a bunch of hoops and fill out a form and mail it in.You're missing the most important part.
REQUESTING these items.
NOT being offered.
there's a big difference in the "human nature" you speak of when these different positions are actually used.
I never said I really liked wired headphones.
I said it would be nice if I could get them if I requested them (as a back up if I forget my AirPods or they run out of battery) at no cost.
No,Requesting them would just be some sort of checkbox on the online order unless you make people go through a bunch of hoops and fill out a form and mail it in.
In the Apple store it would be “Can I have whatever I can get for free”. People would know what they can get for free and would ask for it at the store. This is why I said it could not be free.
Think of it this way if McDonald’s had a deal where you can go to the drive-through and when you order the coffee you can ask for a free biscuit. Human nature is most people would ask for that biscuit even if they had no intention of ordering a biscuit. I’ve gone to restaurants and they said do you want an extra order of fries because we have them and I’m like sure. Did I really need two orders of fries hell no but I have taken them.
To fix the environmental mess we need a whole new way of thinking when it comes to recycling and wasting things. In a perfect world people would only take and use what they needed. Unfortunately in the real world that’s not how things work. People will take everything they can get.
I can understand where you are coming from, but that would negate the financial opportunity this move also brings for Apple to sell chargers and cables at the same time as reducing their environmental impact. No,
Its more like having to ask for free ketchup. Some people want it and "need" it to go with what they're ordering.
Some people don't want it or need it.
This is my last response towards you because you're clearly not understanding the point and perspective.
Or those items were always included in the box as free extras like when Currys sell you a laptop with a free mouse and shoulder bag. They could price the drop by what they charge for those items separately then, if it was supposedly all done in the name of the environment
Can you send them to me? I am thinking of stockpiling them...Makes sense. How many people actually used them?
Of course, I'm sure Apple droppped teh price by $19 for the phone...
Exactly. I have a drawer full of them from over the years.
I can understand where you are coming from, but that would negate the financial opportunity this move also brings for Apple to sell chargers and cables at the same time as reducing their environmental impact.
It would be nice if Apple would include an "OPT-IN" to request a lightning to 3.5mm adapter when every iPhone is purchased. Or provide the earbuds if requested when purchasing a new iPhone.
It doesn't need to be in retail packaging, just the adapter or earbuds themselves in a recyclable zip lock bag.
You don't have to provide them for everyone, just the people who ask for them when they purchase their new iPhone.
Oh and the USB-C charging brick too.
but Apple aint nice, Make'em pay thrice!
Haha - so actually the environmental equation is far from settled.I personally bought some lightning connector wired UrBeats3 to have as back-up if I forget to charge my AirPods or forget to bring them with me all together.
If I could have asked for a complementary lighting AirPods when I purchased my iPhone 13, I would have. Would have saved me $30, another box, and shipping....
Just another way to make money, under the pretence of saving the environment. So we now have to order a new cable, a new plug and a new pair of ear phones - three different boxes, packaged in another box and delivered by another van on another occasion. How does that save the environment?!
