1 week left of my return window for M1 Air. I LOVE this machine, but do you think there’s a chance they will release a M2 Air at this event?
There is always “a chance” but the rumors are that the Air will be redesigned and relaunched with an M2. That is expected some time in the second half of 2022. They probably won’t spec bump this version of the Air if they plan a redesign to soon. Of course, it seems a little soon to spec bump the 13” M1 MBP so who really knows.

Read "Apple to Unveil 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro"
Was like wohoo I can get a new MBP

Then read "With Unchanged Design Next Month, Claims Original MacBook Pro 'Notch' Leaker"
Then its if thats true then Apple have saved me £1300

Such as shame, was hoping MBP 13" would be an updgrade

That is indeed a possibility or (at least for the moment) Apple wants to keep the 13.3" model around as-is because that allows them to continue to place it as a less-expensive alternative to the 14" MacBook Pro (being $300 cheaper when configured with 16GB/512GB and $700 cheaper when configured with 8GB/256GB).

Apple could strip this 13” model of ‘Pro’ suffix and lower the price . ( no Pro SoC on inside , no ‘Pro’ suffix on the outside ). So it would be M2 MacBook

I think where things could get muddy for consumers is when Apple launches the redesigned M2 MacBook Air this Fall as that is rumored to have a Mini-LED display. I personally expect Apple will raise the price of the M2 MBA to $1099 or $1199, keeping the M1 MBA around at $999 (or perhaps $899). So the MBA will have a nicer display for less money then the 13.3" MBP.

A miniLED display on the Air more likely would push Air up in zone where MBP 13” now. Apple could go back to the Air being the ‘extra premium’ , extra slim laptop that is not an entry model .

Then they don’t need to keep around old M1 MBA models. they would have a macbook to fill that could wait several years to move up to moniLED at the entry level.

There is a limit of how many 13-14“ laptops that Apple should offer. Three is a stretch. Going to four would be quite odd for Apple.

the “MacBook” with no suffix/adjective should be the entry model . The suffix/adjective should be more money .

Once they get the name ordering cleaned up then clean up the entry model ( phase out Touch Bar ) . improve durability . Etc.

I don’t want them to be called ‘MacBook’ simply. It is a cursed name.
It’s not the name that was cursed but the 12” MacBook that was cursed.

Yes, it was very small and portable, but the compromises were substantial.

It had a super slow processor and Intel never delivered on a faster version within that thermal envelope. So performance was never competitive. That chipset never supported Thunderbolt so that USB-C port was always gimped. Having a single port meant having to juggle power with monitors and external data store or other USB devices. Most damning was that butterfly keyboard that had such a high failure rate. On top of all of that the price was always too high to be competitive.

it was clear that Apple thought that it would replace the Air when it launched but they were never able to get the performance up enough and the price down enough to fulfill that role.

To be fair I wish my 16 M1 max MacBook Pro would still have a Touch Bar and square of design; but I think this event is only for the entry level products, after months of using my M1 max machine I love it but the design looks dated and old fashion the square style is more modern
This. I don’t like the look of my 14” Pro much. I absolutely love its power, and I like watching HDR content on it, but:
- the design is thick and inelegant compared to the previous model.
- It’s too heavy for my tastes - i have been using a Macbook Air and a 12.5’ HP Elitebook for years and the 14” is noticeably weightier.
- ProMotion is something I absolutely can’t notice. I have a 120Hz OLED TV and I know what good 120fps looks like - the MBP screen does not at all give me the same wow factor.
- the notch… before getting that laptop, i tried convincing people on forums like this one that it’s ‘not a notch’ and ‘just extra space’ but I kind of hate it and I can’t stop looking at it.

The 13” should probably live on a little longer!
- some people still prefer the look and feel of the old 13” design.
- it’s perhaps the only way Apple can reach a $1.5-1.9k price point.
- it has fans! I use Excel a lot and boy do I hear the fans spin on my M1 Pro when I open a 200MB file with a dozen large pivot tables. Oh and it’s a company computer, so add to that the antivirus doing its useless thing, a bunch of Intel-code spyware installed by the admin, MS Teams running Intel processes in the background, OneDrive trying to sync my whole iPhoto library and other absurd forced IT choices… it’s ridiculous but a fanless design isn’t quite sufficient for your typical corporate MS office based workflow these days.

They should keep the 13” like they did with previous MBP generations hanging around for a couple years.

Look at the proposed MBA 2022 non-wedge side ways and the 13" MBP they look VERY similar:

minus MagSafe,
minus the white bezel and notch,
both in outside shape, thickness and even the side speaker grills seem identical

Well, we'll see I guess. You have to remember that those renderings aren't the slightest bit official. They're just made by fans based on the rumors, starting with existing models as a base.

That is a possibility, but a 2020 13.3" M1 MacBook Pro and a 2022 M2 13.3" MacBook that look exactly the same could cause customer confusion (even if Apple immediately ends sales of the 13.3" M1 MacBook Pro).

Then they don’t need to keep around old M1 MBA models. they would have a macbook to fill that could wait several years to move up to miniLED at the entry level.

Tim Cook likes to keep old tech around at lower prices to entice price-conscious people, so I fully expect the M1 MacBook Air will stick around after the M2 refresh is launched by year-end - doubly so if the M2 MacBook Air sees a price increase (which I believe it will).

So the differentiation is only the look. That seems very odd and pointless.

I'm sure there'll be more to it than that. Even Apple must have realised that there isn't much reason to buy the 13" Pro when the 13" Air is so similar (and has function keys!).

Yawn...….i have a Source at apple that has revealed to me that Apple are planning to Unveil a Magic Unicorn that craps MacBook Pro's...enough of these rumours it brings down your credibility when you are instantly proved wrong by Apple.
You don't think the M2 is coming out next month?

Virtually no chance imho. Also keep in mind that the M2 probably won't be an enormous jump. Think A14 vs A15.

Folks. What we need is a 12” Pro. Lighter than the 13 and 14”. No mini LED or ProMotion. 6+4 CPU cores and maybe 12 GPU cores. With decent battery life.
Let’s bring back the name Powerbook.

Basically this would be the machine I was hoping for. Modern and slim design compared to basically all non-Mac laptops in the wild, new future proof CPU. I somehow prefer the Touch Bar, even if I can‘t really say why.
Still hoping the camera will be upgraded, too. The camera within my Ipad Mini 6 and my iMac 24“ give standout picture quality compared to all other colleagues in video meetings. Every time my dark cellar office from hell looks bright nice and cozy, like calling from the caribbean when everyone else is just at home.

I'm definitely intrigued and will probably buy the new M2, I don't really like the notch on the new Pro's, and plus I love the touch bar, I know that some other's don't but Apple is just trying to please everybody which I don't mind so this is actually good news for me! Plus I don't have to give a kidney just to buy the 14-inch version lol, and last but not least I like the slim design of my current M1 MBP it's light and you can carry this sucker everywhere without noticing the weight.

I'll be first in line to buy it. Holding onto my 15" 2017 MC Pro with Touchbar because its very useful to me when you customize the hell out of it. I'd rather not get a 13", but with the M2 chip it'll give me another 5+ years

Well your 16 inch most likely has an M1Pro or max, not a basic M1.
The M1 is the only processor being replaced, not the pro or the max. Those still have probably another year or so before they are updated, and will still outclass the basic M2
Thanks for clarifying that. I ordered the Max, so I guess it will smell like new for at least a year.

I’ve been >< close to buying either a refurb M1 Air or MBP with more DRAM and storage and giving my current M1MBP 8GB/512GB to my wife. I’ll wait a few weeks and if they give me an M2 and TB4/USB4 ports AND the Touch Bar, I’ll snatch one up in a heartbeat. I love the form factor, the Touch Bar and have loved the speed and capability of the M1. I have zero complaints. I’m definitely the target market for this rumored updated model. Bonuses would be more than 16GB DRAM, 2-3 external display support and Wi-Fi 6E.

Very sad they disabled emoji shortcuts on the touchbar with latest os for no longer new models ?

Its just a chip refresh like everyone does. People read too much into it. I dont think a chip makes a machine "pro". I feel like the apple pro machines are for a different market. I dont think normal consumers care about function keys or want a thicker machine. In a lot of ways the older 13 inch with the touch bar is definitely visually more appealing to your average buyer than any of the pro machines.
How about they upgrade all of their Macs to look the same? Apple low-blowed customers by coming out with resdesigned laptops that were made for Pros and started at $2,000. How about a redesign of the original laptops?

Would we expect a Mac Mini with M2 at this event, considering the M1 13" MacBook Pro and M1 Mac Mini were both announced on the same day?

Keep an eye on the rumors around here. Redesigns are on the way.

Apple is rumored to be redesigning the MacBook Airs later this year. That is supposed to be when the Air gets an upgrade to an M2 processor.

Speculation was the the 13" M1 MacBook Pro would either get a redesign or be replaced with something else later this year. Now this rumor suggests it will be getting a spec bump, which suggests that they are not planning to replace or redesign it until later.

Still not sure that they will make all the laptops look the same. The consumer laptops (MacBook Air) will probably look different than the Pro laptops though maybe a little more alike than they do now.

I just want a notch less design, a color option in the color black, Face ID, and maybe an OLED or iPad LED type display.

Apple will next month debut its latest M2 Apple silicon processor in a refreshed 13-inch MacBook Pro model that will have no major design changes, according to a previously reliable source with close links to Apple's supply chain.

13-inch-macbook-pro-m2-mock-feature-2.jpg

Based on the new information seen by MacRumors, the upcoming 13-inch MacBook Pro retains the same design as the current version, including the Touch Bar, but unlike the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, it will not have a notch or a ProMotion display, contrary to some rumors.

If so, that means the headline difference in the new entry-level MacBook Pro model will be the new M2 chip, which features the same number of CPU cores as the ‌M1 processor‌, up to 10 graphics cores, and improved performance.

The above details were relayed by the original source of last year's last-minute MacBook Pro notch rumor that MacRumors was first to report on. In October 2021, we reported that the same leaker said the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models would have a redesigned display with a central notch for the webcam, but no Face ID.

That left-field claim, appearing seemingly out of nowhere and so close to Apple's fall "Unleashed" event, turned out to be completely accurate, and the new redesigned MacBook Pro models were unveiled the next week with the controversial camera housing centered at the top of the screen.

The latest 13-inch MacBook Pro rumor also lines up with a DigiTimes report that appeared last week claiming Apple will launch its first MacBook Pro with second-generation M2 chip at its spring event.

DigiTimes' supply chain sources also claimed that except for the processor, most other components used in the new MacBook Pro will feature almost the same specs as those for the existing model featuring M1 chips, seemingly corroborating the latest rumor.

Well-connected Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman recently said Apple's intention is to release an updated entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro with ‌M2‌ chip in 2022, but this was generally assumed to mean that the machine would appear later in the year, after Apple finishes releasing its final Macs with M1 Pro and M1 Max chips.

Notably, in contrast to the latest rumor, Gurman said he believes Apple will remove the Touch Bar on the new 13-inch machine, although he too expects the notebook will lack a ProMotion display.

Either way, we should know for sure in just a few weeks' time. Apple is working on several new Mac computers to be released this year, and Gurman has suggested the rumored spring event on Tuesday, March 8 will include the launch of "at least one" new Mac. Apple is also expected to introduce new iPhone SE and iPad Air models, which are both believed to feature an A15 chip and 5G support.

Definite fan of the Touch Bar !

Weird choice. I still think the better move is to get rid of the 13” MBP, the “Air" refresh would just be called MacBook, add a 15” version of it soonish, and keep the current MBA form factor as an entry level.

Something like this…

~ $999 13” MBA (M1 maybe even $899, then back to $999 with M2)
~ $1299 13” MacBook in new form factor using M2
~ $1499 15” MacBook in new form factor using M2
~ $1999 14” MBP
~ $2299 16” MBP

"MacBook Air" is arguably the most valuable IP Apple owns related to Macs.
