MediaPost claims that Apple is poised to announce its "next big thing" on April 7th. The new product is reportedly called "iAd" and represents a "personalized, mobile advertising system".

The iAd system is believed to have been built on top of Quattro, a mobile ad firm that Apple acquired in January for $275 million. Few details are known but given Apple's recent success, many will be interested to see their next move:
"Everyone will be following this very closely," says Josh Lovison, the mobile lead at Interpublic's Emerging Media Lab, adding: "Given the way that Apple is able to package things up, with very slick presentations, it will be interesting to see what they do with that advertising."

The move would put them squarely up against Google which was largely built on advertising revenue and has had their own plans to move into the mobile space. In fact, Google's acquisition of Admob has been described as a defensive move to keep the company out of Apple's hands.

Arn you are putting in OT tonight. This will be interesting. Apple is starting to put some of that cash to work. If the future is mobile computing, then this is a great play for us shareholders..

Thanks for the great stories.

Awesome. Explicit apps WITH ads for Dr. Porkenheimer's Boner Juice. Does the future of computing get any better than this? Me thinks not.

Is this a platform for developers to make ad-supported apps (like for example, leave a blank 320x100 rectangle in your app and we'll feed ads into it and track how many people see each ad for payment)? Or is it for inserting ads into media (video, print)? Or something else?

C'mon Apple, stop playing games and update the MBPs already. No one wants to wait until June, when Arrandale processors reach their mid-life.

Maybe this is what was overheard between Steve and Eric..."they are all going to see it, who cares how they get it." Ads! Google or Apple, we will have to see them.

Just a guess...

Ladies and Gentlemen,

LLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEETTS GET READY TO HRRRRRRRRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMMBBBBBBBBBLLLLLEEEE
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great, now I can listen to iPod on my iPad while watching an iAd!

These naming conventions are gettng ridiculous. Ok, iPad, fine. But then to come out with iAd a few days after the iPad release? I agree with others, this does reek of Aprilfoolery.

Uh... what's all the complaining about? This could be awesome. Imagine transferring cost to advertisers in the form a paid or ad-based app option. Don't want to buy an app? No problem, just watch a 20 second video every hour of use and you can have it for free. That would be an ideal setup

Maxis (1990 - 2000): SimFarm, SimCity, SimTown, SimEarth, SimLife, SimTower, SimAnt, SimCopter, SimVille.
Apple (2000 - Present): iPod, iMac, iTunes, iPad, iPhone, iAd

And its still March.

If that is the case, then I think GOOGLE would care how, since they won't make that money if Apple is doing it instead.

Sorry but Apple really does not care about that any more. They to me are not even a computer company any more, sure they make computers like McDonalds makes hamburger, but McD also owns a lot of top value real estate, so the hamburger is just a means to what they really want to have real estate.

Apple is almost a media company a middle man for everything media, sure not everyone uses their product but look at their product line, so it looks like they are in no hurry right now with the latest core processor that I can attest is not a big deal right now vs what is in stores now. A few more months will not do anything for Apple financial health.

Keep it up Apple, stocks are high and life is good. Recession what recession. :D

Not a huge fan of ADs myself.... having said that, they aren't going anywhere (for one) and it might be interesting how Apple 'infuses' themselves into the market. ADs (as far as I've noticed) aren't too targeted and lets face it if we have to see an AD anyway it MIGHT AS WELL be about something that I might be ... oh I dunno ... even the slightest bit INTERESTED IN.. :D

Lets face it - Feminine hygiene products, auto insurance and 'elderly scooter ads' just aren't doing it for me. Those were just a few ads that whizzed by on the TV as I was writing this. Gotta love DVRs!

Well Apple has a 'knack' for reinventing most every business sector they come in contact with... It might even remotely prove interesting and dare I say it ... less annoying.

I will say, since the purchase only went down in Jan, it's is clearly WAY too early in the game to see anything of substance and I don't think they'd tip their hat on ideas they are working on so.. if Apr. is a projected rollout my hopes aren't set too high.

Cause I really want an iAd while watching some videos.

If done right yes you will view it and not even care, look at HULU, 100 times better than regular TV can't watch that stuff any more, 3 and 4 minute advertising, its all about me the consumer, and if the adds are done right and short sure I watch from time to time.
:p

Money money money, the name of the game.

Upgrade to iPhone OS4 now! So that you can have ads play for Dr. Porkenheimer's Boner Juice in the middle of a meeting, trying to look up an important document on your iPad that you didn't silence.

Mute your Apple products before every meeting. ;)

Those are the most fun, I can't get enough of old people that can't walk at the same time I am watching a gladiator movie, there just this warm feeling I get from grappa and his depends boxer shorts.

The hell with exotic cars or cool gadgets or even something new in clothes no who wants that, nope not for me, I want granpa on scooter and grandma waking next to him like she just got schooled by the hot latin pool boy.
