IF the 5G rollout is similar to the 4g rollout, waiting till 2020 is actually smart. I remember the 4G rollout as a frustrating wait for the promised land that took a LOT longer to arrive than originally forecast. I have no doubt that 5G will be the same experience.
In other words, MEH.

5G - fastest way to blow through your data caps for more YouTube and streaming vids than you really needed to watch. :) It’ll get there and I’m not in a big hurry to update solely for 5G.

I haven't worried about speed on my phone in ages. The only hindrance is coverage, which is even less and less a problem these days. What do you need massive speed for? I can already stream video and audio with no issues. What aren't we downloading fast enough?

Classic Apple. Be the last one on the block to show up to the party, and charge the highest price for the honor.

Every product that could be out in 2019 is now pushed to 2020. Every other company will beat Apple to the punch.

"Think Different. Act much later."
Sounds like great marketing for every company with a 5G phone but what about their customers? What customers will be benefiting by paying more for 5G handsets? The ones in a handful of coverage areas in a handful of cities? 5G won't be a nationwide service for another 3-5 years.

Ill be honest, I hardly even use the speed of LTE, let alone a 5G option. 5G seems more geared for home internet.
Definitely. I think a millimeter band radio wave that can’t penetrate anything only makes sense for non-mobile applications.

I’m really in no rush for 5g phones. I can’t reallt complain about the LTE speeds from AT&T in my area, it’s pretty damn quick already.

For me even Att’s 4G 5/1Mbps is enough. Tim Cook should jump above his head to sell me new iPhone. I’ve changed them every year till now.

I really feel that this year Tim sold me “potential” of the iPhone XS. Where are EKG and eSIM?!

Never ever have I thought to myself "I wish I had faster internet on my phone". Therefore I couldn't care less about 5G or when Apple's going to support it.
Have you ever tried using your phone in a congested area? Sporting event or something? 5G helps increase the bandwidth. More bandwidth, more users can use their phones at once. That being said we are a long ways off from this being widely adopted. I think 2020 is likely earlier than needed. The infrastructure isn't close to being ready.

Or, classic apple, wait until competitors come out with their version, refine it and make it better. Then charge a premium because it’s a premium product.

Individual increases in bandwidth will actually increase network congestion.

5G, using up your data plan in a fraction of a second since 2020
It’s hilarious to me that people can have such a blatantly ignorant “understanding” of basic technology.
Lol, do you people think the EXACT SAME usage somehow consumes more data on a faster connection??
If I upgraded my home connection from 100mb to 1gb, you think my Netflix streaming would now consume 10x the data??
*smh*
Nobody is out there saying “yeah, I have the time & inclination to watch about 30 minutes of YouTube a day on mobile... but that’s only because of the super slow 4g LTE technology; shoot, if it was only a bit faster- I’d free up more time & start watching 3 hours of YouTube a day instead!”.

Lol, please... describe to me what I could do on my phone to eat up 10gb of data in “a fraction of a second”.

Not at sporting events but definitely in very, very congested areas. Haven't had any issues, even though my carrier is the worst there is in my country. But I also don't use my phone to surf the web or stream media when I'm around thousands of people. And even if I'm alone I don't stream media. Just regular surfing and occasionally texting. So like I said, I couldn't care less. I only speak for myself though.

So 2022 will be 802.11ax?

I'm not sure what the hoopla is about 5G or this Apple announcement.

  1. I live in New England with an iPhone 7 Plus and the AT&T speeds are fine for me doing email, texting, making calls, surfing the web, and watching Youtube. If it's anything I need, it's more coverage in the very (and even not-so) rural towns near me but if it's not here now, it's probably never coming anyway.
  2. As someone mentioned, 5G speeds are really designed for home internet service. Everyone likes faster this and faster that, but if my 7 Plus streams just fine, what is 5G going to offer? 3 seconds faster to download that 20MB attachment? I'm not dropping $1100 for that kind of feature.
  3. 5G is either currently beta or brand spanking new in the various states of the USA, right? All 50 states aren't going to magically become 5G enabled with a single mouse click on 1 day. It's going to take years to roll it out to *everyone*. Sure, the classic 3-5 cities will get it first but that's not 100% of the USA cellphone user base.
  4. I can't even tell you what ATT provides me on a 2-hour road trip...4G or LTE. But when I have service, my phone works perfectly 100% fine. There is likely a huge customer base like me (and I'm very computer savvy) that has no idea what my cell service network technology is and really don't care...because currently it all works just fine.
  5. On a related note, WIFI is practically everywhere. Your home, office, hotels, planes, gas stations, restaurants, and even buses. Most often it is free. I use about 3GB of data per month on my phone because I'm always on WIFI (my home, my office, my relative's homes) and the iPhone just connects to WIFI when available. Most likely WIFI is faster now than 4G or LTE and it may be even faster when 5G finally gets major coverage in 2020-2022 in the USA. But the other factor about WIFI is that it saves your cell data plan.
  6. Given all the above (or even just a few points), who's salivating for 5G other than the 1% that are bandwidth hogs and/or want to use 5G as their home internet provider? I have a home internet connection of 200Mbit down/10Mbit up. Sure, I'd love to have 1Gbit or faster down, but my multiple laptops, iPhones, iPads, 2 AppleTVs, and desktop work just fine. Every. Day. My desktop is the only item that maxes out my downstream connection when I download large files (4GB-12GB per file) every day. I get about 25MBytes/sec which is quite nice. Sure, I'd always welcome more speed but again that is for my desktop. What exactly does my iPhone need these blazing speeds for? If AT&T wants to provide me with 5G coverage for my home internet use and give me 1TB of data download per month (that's not a typo) with no speed degradation, and cost less than $100 a month, sign me up. Right now my 200Mbit is $60/month.
I live in Northern NE and it would be nice just to have decent LTE coverage everywhere. The carriers move to HD Voice (voice over LTE) is going to be a failure if the coverage isn't good.

Eh, I'm still dropping calls on 4G. And since my understanding is that 5G has a smaller signal area, I'm not in a rush.
Agreed. Every time I’ve tried using volte on my iPhones I’ve had issues. Main problem is I can’t always hear some people it’ll sound fuzzy... turn volte off and no issues. Dunno if it’s the iPhones, others phones or my carrier (biggest one in Australia..) Frustrating as I was looking forward to volte

Just as a FYI, Comcast went to a 1TB (1,0000 GB) data cap nationwide after some blowback on the 250GB cap being too small...this was several years ago.

Thanks. I'm pulled in so many directions in my life, hard to notice everything.

Anyways, I wonder if we'll ever see 5g (or any kind of cell service) builtin to Macs?

5G may get data faster, but it don't use any more, so your daily/monthly data usage will be the same.
A faster connection will ALWAYS = more usage. I remember some people saying usage won’t change between the transition from 3G-4G LTE...
But videos on facebook will load quicker etc, instagram loads quicker which in turn will mean looking for more content.
It will also open up possibilities for higher quality music and video on the go.
Edit: on top of that look how much our usage has gone up from between 3G-4G LTE, a massive amount. It shows that a higher speed will always mean more usage.
