I like how the same people that dismiss Apple's ARM CPU dominance & say 'well that doesn't matter!' also whine that Apple will support 5G a year later- as if that has more immediate use cases for a phone...

Who cares about 5G? I have continuous problems with AT&T LTE unless I am downtown in a major metro area, not enough antennas or they are overloaded. 5G means more antennas and that means it will only appear and work well in city centers. The trend is to abandoned city centers, except for areas like silicon valley. People are just tired of the crime, waste (literally), pollution, etc. With current technology there is no need to live in a major city.

It’s hilarious to me that people can have such a blatantly ignorant “understanding” of basic technology.
Lol, do you people think the EXACT SAME usage somehow consumes more data on a faster connection??
If I upgraded my home connection from 100mb to 1gb, you think my Netflix streaming would now consume 10x the data??
*smh*
Nobody is out there saying “yeah, I have the time & inclination to watch about 30 minutes of YouTube a day on mobile... but that’s only because of the super slow 4g LTE technology; shoot, if it was only a bit faster- I’d free up more time & start watching 3 hours of YouTube a day instead!”.

Lol, please... describe to me what I could do on my phone to eat up 10gb of data in “a fraction of a second”.

first of all, most people dont have 10gb of data, at least not up here in Canada. Less than 4gb is the norm and often less than 2gb. More than 6gb is extremely rare. Second, with the speed of LTE, what is really being made appreciably faster by increasing the connection speed, the only time it will be noticeable is if the size of content increases. This will be from higher res graphics being used on websites and 4k video streaming to your phone, as well as cloud based storage of high res photos, live photos, photos with multiple focal depths built in, 4k 60fps video. All sorts of things that higher speeds will allow (whether they are needed or not)

What ordinary consumers are going to use 5G for is not entirely clear.

5G has its advantages for verticals, but for consumers it's basically just more bits to your little device per second. Yes, the latency is lower with 5G, but again this will mostly lead to new use cases for businesses etc.

Classic Apple. Be the last one on the block to show up to the party, and charge the highest price for the honor.

Every product that could be out in 2019 is now pushed to 2020. Every other company will beat Apple to the punch.

"Think Different. Act much later."

"We think we have the right size." Tim Cook on the iPhone 5 when he introduced it in 2012 and was asked about larger phones available at the time from Samsung and others. Stock was near 700 at the time on its way to 380 in 10 months. Now, he's talking about "grocery baskets" to justify becoming opaque WRT iPhone unit sales.

Instead of webpages loading in a second, they will now load in half a second.

JUST IMAGINE how this is going to change the world and redefine everything we thought we knew about mobile. /s

A faster connection will ALWAYS = more usage. I remember some people saying usage won’t change between the transition from 3G-4G LTE...
But videos on facebook will load quicker etc, instagram loads quicker which in turn will mean looking for more content.
It will also open up possibilities for higher quality music and video on the go.
Edit: on top of that look how much our usage has gone up from between 3G-4G LTE, a massive amount. It shows that a higher speed will always mean more usage.
Yes things will load quicker, but even at a quarter of the time it takes to load now, realistically, just how much extra download/usage time in a 24hr period do you think you will actually gain? a few seconds maybe. Higher quality music and videos, granted. But even those will get better compression to make smaller files. I think in a real world scenario with normal everyday use it will make very little difference. Just my opinion, time will tell.

as a verizon share holder i don't like this. Verizon seems to be putting a lot of effort into 5G. With one of the most popular cell phone makers holding out for a bit isn't good for marketing.

how is 5G unhealthy?

Your hair follicles are helical antennae well tuned to the frequencies used by 5G.

I'm willing to bet the next iPhone is another small update the way the 7 was. XSS

It's pretty much a lose-lose situation for apple.

Scenario 1: Apple includes 5G in 2019 iPhones. People complain, there is no coverage (not apple's fault but people will point the blame to them), battery life is bad, coverage is unreliable in markets with 5g (could be either apple/intel/modem provider's fault of carrier's fault)

Scenario 2: Apple waits until 2020: Apple is not innovating, all these other manufacturers have 5g (though with no coverage), etc, etc.

Apple is perpetually 1-2 years behind everyone else, so not huge news. When they finally figure it out though it’ll be cool cause it’ll be a World first 5G mobile device. In fact they’ll have been working with cellar companies for a decade to create this newest fastest world firstest network.

LOL!!! I'm actually shocked by this article. I would have expected Apple to be on board in 2023. Because they are usually 4 years behind other companies in many things customers actually want.

5G rolling out, and people still paying $1000+ for new iPhones which don't support 5G......yah, no thanks, I'll wait.

Which means by the time these 5G iPhones come out Apple will be charging $2k for the base model with an LCD display.
Hey, hey, hey, it's an All-new Liquid Retina display LCD display - the most advanced LCD in the industry.. Lol.

What's the use of 5G using Intel modem? It will be 3G or 0G (out of coverage)....they can wait until they could toss between Qualcomm and Intel!

I have a hard time thinking of possible benefits 5G has over 4G for consumers. What would I do on the go that requires such speed in the next three years?
That's what everyone said when 4G came, they even speculated that 4G speed would consume all their monthly data in 15 minutes or less.

But the reality is that when VoLTE or LTE or 4G network speed goes down, they complain a lot. They feel even 3G is considered inadequate.

We are spoilt kids and we will feel the difference or they will make us to feel the difference
