CIRP's survey also found that most of the quarter's iPhone purchases (86 percent) came from loyal Apple customers who upgraded from older iPhones.

Well there you have it. Since CIRP surveyed loyal Apple users, then naturally they were more likely to buy an iPhone an stay in the Apple ecosystem. My question is: if 86% of those surveyed were "loyal Apple customers", then how come they account for only 50% of the activations?

statistics...can be manipulated to show whatever result you want.

Looking at the first linked web site, they actually say phone activations and not smartphone activations. Companies like Samsung are still selling a good number of phones that are not smartphones.

You are misreading this. CIRP surveyed all kinds of people. But among those that bought an iPhone, 86% were "loyal Apple customers". Among those that bought other phones, the percentage of "loyal Apple customers" was probably low  Samsung has probably 86% "loyal Samsung customers" and LG has 50% "former loyal Samsung customers".

Nowhere in that sentence says 86% of those surveyed were loyal Apple customers. You should read it twice and make sure you understood before making silly comments.

Here is what it means: 86% of 50% is 43%, which is nearly the percentage of iPhone users among all smartphone owners prior to the release of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Does it make sense now?

Think about it, HTC is at 2%, and they're at least relevant. What hope does Blackberry have to be even close to that?

Maybe they should ask the government to enforce iOS apps on BB OS.

"No one will want an iPhone 6 Plus. It's too big!"
I have the 6, and while it's a lovely phone (except for the glass coming up off the body of the phone after a few days of light use), it is too big for me. I have huge hands, but I can't reach the top left corner without adjusting my grip. I'd love an iPhone 6 the same size as the 5s.
"iPhone 5c AND 5s? No one wants two phones."
Nobody said that.
"The 5s is $100 more for just a fingerprint sensor? No one will want that!"
Even if that's all it was, $100 for Touch ID is a good deal for me. Unlocking the phone and Amazon and 1Password and Dropbox with my fingerprint is so convenient. The rest of the phone wasn't bad either!

Really interested to see what happens with >5 inch phones.

Was in an Apple Store with my girlfriend - an iPhone user but not remotely interested in tech like us on this forum - she said 'I'd like the 6 plus because it's obviously the best phone, but, in some ways it's too big. The 6 is more... Managable in my hand'.

As for me, it's a 6 Plus all the way... When my upgrade happens.

Ha! One of my friends can't get over round watches. He keeps saying - look at the Motorola! That's fashionable AND round!

I try and explain that the Apple Watch can reflect a user's personal taste, but he just thinks I mean 'fashionable = looks good'.

After the way they mocked Apple and iPhone users, I dont.

Not against those types of ads (I like the cortana vs Siri ads and Mac vs PC) but Samsung insulted Apple users, and I think hurt their brand images as a result.

Both of you should not feel sorry or be happy for any corporation. Just saying..

No, USA is not the world

I switched from Windows Phone (HTC 8X) to iPhone 6+ a week ago. I'm liking the 6+, although I do miss some things about Windows (Cortana, Here Drive, better Facebook integration). I've been an iPad user for a long time, so it's not like there are many surprises in iOS, but the big screen and battery life are very nice improvements.

I also went full retail for an unlocked phone, even though I'm staying on Verizon. I'm sick and tired of being tied to the 2-year upgrade cycle.

I would like to see windows make some noise with their WindowsPhone. It isn't that bad and the Nokia 900 series are good phones, they just need to undercut on prices initially to get the phones in users hands.

the data shows Apple's U.S. activation market share increasing from 28 percent in the July-September 2014 quarter to 50 percent in the October-December quarter.

Not unusual. When the iPhone 5 came out, it accounted for 51% of Verizon activations.

Remember, these are activations NOT sales.

Whenever Apple brings out a new model, activations jump like crazy, for two reasons:

1) People upgrading to the new model.
2) People re-activating the older hand-me-down or resold model.

In the past, used iPhones have accounted for as much as 1/4 of reported AT&T iPhone activations.

That is using the term smart phone loosely. Since Android is not a phone, this chart is taking about OS. Now that be said, most of the phones running Android are cheaper low cost phone that would be compared to the iPhone.

A better comparison would be with the 'high cost' smart phones running Android.

iPhone 6 is not too different from budget Moto G since they both have 1GB DRAM, equivalent screen size/resolution, do pretty much the same, etc. A high cost Android phone like a 2013 or even 2012 Galaxy Note wouldn't be a fair comparison since it has more DRAM, precision pen input, AMOLED, advanced features like split screen multitasking, etc.

In the same way a Porsche 911 isn't too different to an Elantra; they both have 4 tires, brakes, headlights, taillights, steering wheel and gas pedal.

Oh and apple is heading to a record breaking quarter, how is samsungs mobile phone business doing?

iPhones are made in China just like Moto G and not in Germany.

Newcomers like Xiaomi are taking away marketshare from both #1 Samsung and #2 Apple.

And hyundais are made in korea, not china. But porsches perform better with a 6 cylinder 3.8 liters engine than american cars with 8 cylinder 7 liters engines. They are more expensive too. The average redneck still thinks his camaro is better of course anyway, the numbers are bigger you know.

This reminds me something....

Yay for BlackBerry! I LOVE them!

I feel sorry for HTC. They get zero respect and the HTC M8 was one of the best phones in 2014. In terms of build quality and software (Sense), its probably the best Android could offer.

Yay for Blackberry?

What graph are YOU looking at?

Though current Camaros, are pretty different from the ones in the 1980s.. .Not the same car AT ALL. A much more upmarket car that most "rednecks" can"t afford anymore.

Lets put the profitability/revenue numbers here and see how that stacks up; 80% of current android makers will be lucky to be in business in 3 years. Or profits from Apps sales, or even money Google makes from IOS vs Android (the most funny stat of all).
