Yeah sure, go ahead and manage all the references for a 20 page paper for hand and tell me how much time you waste. I use a combo of Papers + Endnote + Word, and I get my referencing done in no time, if I were to do it by hand in Pages it would take hours. And you're just being childish. I don't blame the tools, Pages is a fine piece of software for home use and probably most uses in the office. But for work requiring references, it's garbage out of the box.

And spelling and grammar checking is better in Word, and as english is now my first language I appreciate this while writing my papers.

We recently assembled a 1100 page (in A5 ... about half of US letter size) grant with Word on a MBP and it worked fine. I wouldn't want to do that with any other program (LaTeX, iWork, OpenOffice.) And then, we made a password protected PDF for submission.

We actively discourage template usage because it's looks "gimmicky." Black text, while background is perfect for a scientific talk. Everything else is a distraction.
Good for you. Frankly though presentations should be as light on text as possible, that's why the presenter is there in the first place. (Otherwise you might as well just send out a group email).

Well that's actually what I'm saying. Word does the job very well, and I wouldn't be able to be as efficient in Pages/OpenOffice as I'm with Word. LaTeX is too much, and there's no use for is in the medical field at least.

Edit: Why did you use A5? I have never seen anybody use anything other than A4. :)

Being a longtime Apple supporter that would be amazing an amazing turn of events to witness in my lifetime.

(At the very least I'd like to see Apple save Microsoft with a $150 million investment when they get in a pinch. ;) )

On August 6, 1997, Microsoft bought for $150 million non-voting shares in Apple, which serves until today as a detector for cluelessness when someone claims that Microsoft controls Apple in any way (Microsoft sold the shares long ago, and they were non-voting shares in the first place). The share price adjusted for splits was $5.38. Had Microsoft not sold the shares, they would be worth about $8.5 billion today. So buying them was a good business decision at the time.

If Apple invested $150 million in Microsoft shares, they would most likely lose money over the next years, like everyone did who invested in Microsoft in the last few years. So no, I don't think they should buy any Microsoft shares.

Steve Jobs' weight losses are rather worrisome - you should be hoping that he looked more like Ballmer and less like Twiggy.

Forty years after that photo was taken, Twiggy is still going strong, being paid very well for her Marks & Spencers TV ads. So I'll trust your judgement and propose that Steve Jobs will be doing just fine in forty years' time.

I guess the original format was A4 (in software) but you had to submit three bound copies (to the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), so they were printed out on A5. I guess it makes them easier to carry around to the study panel/section.

Great… now there will be rumors of Apple buying Microsoft.

Microsoft just had a record quarter themselfs .. they are doing fine. Ballmer sure slept though the major shift to more mobile appliances, but in MS core market, Windows and Office, they are still ahead by far and no one is really in sight changing that picture anytime soon.

Apple on the other hand sure got the mobile call right. iOS is fanstastic, but then again they dropped the ball for the regular computer/desktop market. Lion is coming rather late and is a huge disappointment so far.

I think both companies just grew apart and it is time to bury this silly rivalry. MS is mostly about buisness and home theater/console with the Xbox .. and Apple these days is mostly about iOS.

Why no fawning articles today about Verizon/iPhone and how VZW have been found guilty by the FCC of overcharging customers for data and have been hit with a fine of $25million and forced to pay back their customers?

Seriously, i have seen countless Mac idiots. They have on clue on current technology. One of my friend even claimed that iLife can be installed on Windows and they seriously believe Apple user high end stuffs compare with PC. I mean, Apple use Intel (Core 2 Duo, Core i5, Core i7) so does PC.

For the vast majority of consumers the model of processor is meaningless. The computer is either "fast enough" or it isn't. My 2006 Core Duo (not even 2) iMac is fast enough for me, so spewing i5 and i7 around doesn't mean a hill of beans. :)

Microsoft Surface is already in the market. It just not target toward consumer market. You can see one in AT&T store and Sheraton Hotels (5 locations). AND Microsoft start this project long before Apple even thought about iPhone.

So they sold what, 6? Big deal. It's just a toy, built to make people think Microsoft is on the cutting edge. Cameras to detect touches? WTF?

Ever hear of the hotel that has an iMac in every room?

MSFT doesn't have the same vision without Gates, too bad for MSFT he went off to try solving human and world issues.

Companies rise and fall, you'll see a company overtake Apple at some point too. Look at how the mighty Big 3 have fallen.

bill gates got out because he knew what was going to happen to msft in the not too distant future, the shares he bought to help appl way back then started turning against msft

If you really want get him going drop "Apple Tax" into the conversation. ;)

You know that Microsoft currently tries to establish a Microsoft Tax on all Android phones and tablets? I think Samsung is already paying them for the use of patents that Microsoft claims to have on Android software, and they want money from Acer and others as well. So unless these hardware companies want to risk expensive lawsuits, their customers will end up paying Microsoft for - nothing.

I think you need a bit of help yourself. I find it exceedingly funny that Microsoft missed out on more than 8 billion dollars by selling their Apple shares much too early. That said, I'm not a Microsoft shareholder; if I was I would find it much less funny. That 8 billion is about 90 cent per Microsoft share, or four percent of their market caps.

The war with Google us the same as was with MS 20 years ago. They start off all cozy. Google making apps for the iPhone. They're on the board. They're playing nice. All of a sudden google is making it's own os to run on other devices that compete with Apple's. Apple's system and OS is closed. Only Apple can make and sell their hardware and OS so other companies want to make phones and will use android. 20 years ago just replace phone with PC, Google with MS, and Android with Windows. Only difference this time is Apple got a bigger head start. But it won't last forever. Then what? Does Apple repeat history?

There are a lot more differences than that. First off, Apple never had nearly the market share impact with computers that they do with iOS devices. (they barely ever scratched 10% computer share). Secondly, the phone market likely has a drastically different profile for both tolerating the user experience that results from a fragmented android market with 100's of devices reacting to apps and software updates differently, and for accepting the an integrated approach like Apples. Thirdly, the phone market is largely influenced or even dominated by individual consumers, whereas the computer market is largely influences or dominated by enterprise.

I believe these differences make the comparisons to Apple and MS in 80's moot, and this time around we will see a very different outcome. One that most likely has 2-3 dominate players, each seeing very good success with their particular strategy.

Help Wanted: CEO needed for large software company in the Northwest. Must be able to compete against growing threats from more innovative and faster moving companies. Must be charismatic and willing to take risks. Must know how to copy competitors quicker and actually have a few unique idea's along the way. :p

Ballmers days are numbered.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been getting better products from Apple now than ever before. The risk of Apple getting too successful is that they stop innovating and just keep selling the same old versions of things. That’s certainly not happening.

To me the biggest risk of Apple getting too big is that they take away even more control from the user. Steve Jobs is great when he's the underdog. He's a jerk when he's the guy on top.

Case in point: Awesome OS that hides the unix underpinnings if you don't want to see it

Versus: new iPhones/iPod touches that can record HD video but do not have HDMI output from the dock

Twiggy didn't look that way because of pancreatic cancer and a liver transplant. Think it's time for you to get real.

Dont Microsoft still make more profit than Apple though? Like the bottom of the article says. Im really looking forward to Kinect myself. I played it in the shops and it was great !

MSFT is still the best performing stock, ever

Dont Microsoft still make more profit than Apple though?

The very fact this question even comes up is quite telling. Would you have had to ask such a question 5 years ago? That's the whole point. It makes no difference that "hey, MS *still* makes a billion more profit!" We're in a position now where we're looking for details and technicalities in order to extol MS' financial performance compared to Apple?? What?? This kind of discourse - the very existence of it (this time due to actual numbers released) is worrisome for Microsoft. The worm has turned. Signs and portents, my friend.

Windows and Office sales can still sustain Microsoft - which is the exact problem they're facing. MS is making money off all the wrong things. Licensing rackets and Office volume sales are a poor substitute for the kind of real innovation that is happening elsewhere in the market. And as we're seeing, it's not working anymore when it comes to competing against the likes of Apple.

MS stock has tanked under Ballmer.

I am assuming you're being humorous. However, if I truly scare you, can you please elaborate? Is it because I'm one of the 4 people on this forum that can write a cohesive post longer than 2 sentences? :)

Although you can write quite well, you're guilty of what I am much of the time. You're long winded for this forum. A bit of self editing before you post would be good. It's not like anything you said hasn't been said fefore or was incredibly insighful. Which is fine, some things bear repeating in here. But nobody is going to read it. Especially as a wall if text. Find a paragraph break at least!

The Xbox has always been innovating. Look at Kinect , while Sony are copying the wii Microsoft have a whole new experience. In the console world the xbox has always been innovating. I also fail to see how making lots of money from Windows and Office is a problem lol? Is there a wrong way to make lots of money like you say? Can I say all Apple make money from are ipods and iphones?
