typo

if you view the .pdf in acrobat, you can see that the document has markups in it showing where typos are. a red line next to that specific paragraph.

One possibility is that the tech writer was at a loss for words. "Touch wheel" is usually used to describe the 2nd generation iPod to distinguish it from the early mechanical wheel model. The 3rd gen was the oddball, with its separate row of touch-sensitive buttons, and in end-user documentation it's usually called the "iPod with dock connector".

"Dock connector" may have been a better descriptor for them to use, since that would identify all the models that have this mode.
If he had any idea what he was talking about he would have used Dock connector instead of referring to the scroll wheel.

I was sorely disappointed this article is on Page 2.. it should be on Page NULL because it's an obvious typo.

As an owner of a 2nd generation iPod (i.e., the first touch-wheel iPod), it's important to note that the Notes feature is not available on these iPods, casting some doubt on the typo theory.

KBase 93951:
The Notes feature is available on iPods that have a dock connector. This includes iPod mini, iPod (with Dock Connector), and iPod (Click Wheel) models.

and actually, in the paragraph before on the document in question, it states that the iPod Notes feature can be used on any iPod with a dock connector

...still, it doesn't make much sense whether it was a typo or not.

This seems likely, except though that other than more disk space and the wheel itself, I don't think there was any serious difference between the 1gen (5Gb scroll-wheel) iPod and the 2gen (or 1.5gen, depending on your PoV) 10Gb/15Gb touch-wheel iPod. My iPod is 2gen, identical to the original, but with a touchwheel and 10Gb. No dock connector. Nice, full sized, firewire port. No USB.

I agree though that it makes the most amount of sense, it's the kind of mistake I make all the time, where I intend to type one word and start typing it and then find a completely different word on my screen.

If it really is referring to a future generation of iPods, then the sentence makes no sense whatsoever, as it appears to be implying most models older than the 5gen units.

It's just a typo for "touch wheel":

"Identifying different iPod models"
( http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61688 ):

iPod (20 GB dock connector) 2003-09 touch wheel 20 GB 2.3
iPod (40 GB dock connector) 2003-09 touch wheel 40 GB 2.3
iPod (10 GB dock connector) 2003-04 touch wheel 10 GB 2.3
iPod (15 GB dock connector) 2003-04 touch wheel 15 GB 2.3
iPod (30 GB dock connector) 2003-04 touch wheel 30 GB 2.3
iPod (10 GB touch wheel) 2002-07 touch wheel 10 GB 1.5
iPod (20 GB touch wheel) 2002-07 touch wheel 20 GB 1.5
iPod (10 GB scroll wheel) 2002-03 scroll wheel 10 GB 1.5
iPod (5 GB scroll wheel) 2001-10 scroll wheel 5 GB 1.5

Well, whatever it was, just bring out the wide screen, touch-face, iGizmo already! :D  ;) :)

Well, whatever it was, just bring out the wide screen, touch-face, iGizmo already! :D  ;) :)

I think it might be soon. This happened yesterday and I just finished typing it in ichat to one of my friends so I will repost it here:

i have a quick story that i promise is going somewhere
...
so yesterday at the apple technology update they had a girl who knew way too much about os x server giving a sneak peak into leopard
one weird part was when she showed us the system preferences and it only had like 5 icons on it...the rest were all blurred out
but it gets kinda better
so she was talking about "podcast producer" which, i must say, sounds pretty sexy
it lets you associate your mac with an 10.5 server
and then you fire it up, start your keynote class presentation, and it records your slides/audio/whatever you feed it
then when class is over you hit stop
and before you can walk back to your office
podcast producer has encoded your presentation and posted it on the web for whatever you've specified:
webpage
3g cell phone
new touch screen ipod
--eerrrr!
wait..well...if we had a touchscreen ipod

ooooooops!

true story!

Just found this. Hope it has not been posted already. I did a search. This PDF from apple confirms touch screen.

Okay here's the part that makes me think it's a legit slipup.

Second paragraph
"Furthermore, you can also customize the iPod interface by creating custom menus to display categories that users navigate to view your notes.."

Is this type of interface modification supported in current or past iPods? If not, it could indicate new functionality in an apparently customizable touch screen display. The Note reads awkwardly but may simply be intended to indicate that only those features apply to the 5G and features like custom interface apply only to the touch screen.

The "Touch-Wheel"/"Touch-Screen" screw-up seems likely, so I'm not likely to agree that Apple slipped out any product info. But a "Freudian" slip seems most likely. SOMEone at Apple had "Touch-Screens" on the brain.

Wow

ThinkSecret stoops to a new low level.

They just posted an article about this, and didn't mention a drop about it being a typo    :(

Pretty much shows that ThinkSecret is dying for visitors and shouldn't be trusted.

AppleInsider ftw! :D

I don't know if it's a typo or not, but I just love stories like this where somebody pounces on a little detail which might be a big clue. That's the fun part of rumor-mongering.

digg vs macrumors

Funny how this made it to the front page of digg.com -- which in turn nearly brought down the server hosting the PDF in question -- but it's just page 2 news on MacRumors, where the majority of people seem to agree it's just a typo.

Anyone else notice that it says "with software version 1.2 or later"

... we're only on 1.1.1 right now correct?

evidence of a slip up?
