That looks like they meant Touch-Wheel Models...

It makes sense if you change Screen to Wheel.

I don't think this has anything to do with the new iPod coming soon...;)

Funny how this made it to the front page of digg.com -- which in turn nearly brought down the server hosting the PDF in question -- but it's just page 2 news on MacRumors, where the majority of people seem to agree it's just a typo.

Not only that, but as you can see from this thread, it was first discussed here over a week ago with little fanfare. The ONLY reason it's been moved to Page 2 now is because of the prominence it's suddenly receiving elsewhere (and thus a preemptive move to combat multiple repostings).

MacRumors weighed it, measured it, and found it wanting long ago.

It's just a mistaken use of the word "screen". Clearly, the "beginning with" is in reference to older models, not some new feature. Someone was working late, that's all.

Of course we'll see touch-screen iPods at some point, but this isn't the smoking gun here.

Exactly.

The note says, essentially:

[These advanced features] only work with 5G and better iPods. All other features work with [older iPods].

It HAS to mean "older iPods" because it would be silly to have a couple of high-end features working on current hardware, but the guts of the features (which, btw, are proven to have been working on all touch-wheel iPods with display screens) won't work until some new iPods come out.

Yeah, 5G iPods can link to photos and videos from Notes. However, other features, like, you know, reading said notes, don't work on them. Sorry.

Critical reading skills, guys!

The only argument for this being a "slip up" is that the guy writing this particular note has heard about "touch screen" iPods in the halls and this was a Freudian slip. However, that also is somewhere between unlikely and meaningless; Apple's future iPod models are NOT known to the tech writer describing the Notes API! If he "heard it in the halls" it's because the people in Apple's halls talk about the latest rumors which pop up on sites like, you know, this one. This is as preposterous a claim as saying that touch-screen iPods are coming because some guy at Best Buy heard it through reliable channels that they were to gear up for selling touch-screen iPods. Apple doesn't work that way! Trust me on that!

This is what I found when I downloaded the PDF in question just a moment ago. Whatever typo/slip-up there was is gone now.

Note: Linking to photos and videos is supported only for 5th generation iPods running iPod Software
version 1.2 or later. All other Notes feature capabilities described in this document are supported for
iPod models beginning with third-generation iPod (dock connector) models with touch wheel.

This seems likely, except though that other than more disk space and the wheel itself, I don't think there was any serious difference between the 1gen (5Gb scroll-wheel) iPod and the 2gen (or 1.5gen, depending on your PoV) 10Gb/15Gb touch-wheel iPod.
Right, and the 2nd gen didn't have the museum feature either. That seems to have been the fumble: "duh gee Tennessee, what do I call this touch wheel iPod that isn't the other touch wheel iPod?" to which Tennessee replies "a milk truck!" and then everyone laughs.

Don't read too much into it, Apple has hinted at features before that never saw the light of day. But who knows.

I just want to avoid the post 6 months from now about how Apple has ruined some ones world by not releasing the touch screen ipods and they are going to sell every Apple product they own and by a dell or sony.

The "Touch-Wheel"/"Touch-Screen" screw-up seems likely, so I'm not likely to agree that Apple slipped out any product info. But a "Freudian" slip seems most likely. SOMEone at Apple had "Touch-Screens" on the brain.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Some Freudian slip!

Wow, if that's not from the horse's mouth than I don't know what is. I say that this is concrete evidence that Apple will soon be releasing a touch screen iPod.

Sweet :)

If they do produce a touch-screen ipod, hopefully I'll have the option of being able to use the machine without having to use the touch-screen. I really hate touch-screens, and I dislike the absence of physical buttons to interface with my machine. in my opinion the touch sensitive click wheel is the absolute best portable player control ever designed, and i think taking away the actual buttons would ruin the design. Ive used creative zens that have nothing but touch sensitive controls with nary a button in sight. i didnt like it one bit. Ironically i like tapping the trackpad of my macbook rather than using the button, but the difference is when i walk with my ipod i do searches and song switching without looking at the machine. without physical buttons i may have trouble doing that. also, if they do produce a touch screen, how many people will constantly gripe about smudges their fingers leave on it? ipods have been delicate beauties for quite some time, people stuff them in cases and coat them with plastics to keep them from getting smudged and scratched. IF the ipod eventually gets this new fangled doodad, would one still be able to stuff it in a case without lowering its functionality?

Youd have to smoke a ton of crack in order to do something like that:eek:

I doubt that apple would stick to a design if it turns out most people hate it. and considering that ipods are the only portable players so far that work on OS X they have to be extremely careful about how they treat the ipod design.

huh? Most player just show up as storage cards/hard drives on OSX. How is that "not working"?

Too much crack? :)

i tried using my sony walkmans on my mac, i was never able to load anything onto it, but it did make a fancy flash card. But the interface software that allows me to actually load the music onto the player doesnt work.

Well ditch the software and use iTunes. Your Apple machine comes with everything you need :)

My Sony PDA works well as a mp3 player. Anything that you can mount should do too.

ipod & iphone

Ok here it is, I was having trouble with my imac today so i phoned apple support. After being on the phone with the operator I kind of struck up some sort wierd relationship with her. I asked her if she used mac products and she said yes with the exception of her mp3 player. I asked her why she hasn't switched to an ipod yet and she said that she is going to wait till the end of January (Mac World or CES in Vegas). Hmmm I kinda got a feeling to press her a little more so I decided to tell her I was on a cell phone and having trouble hearing her. I made a comment, "I want to switch phone carriers". I continued to ask her what phone carrier she used and she said that she has been using the same carrier for years and has no intentions of getting out of her contract until "the end of January". I put two and two together and asked her if she had seen photo copies or pictures of new products. She said, "better than that", "employees have perks", bingo the release of a new ipod and the long awaited iphone. I asked her if she was me when would be a good time to get a new cell phone and she said at the end of January. She also said that it would be to my best interest to get a Nokia.

wow, the insider scoop!! good that you got someone that was accually genuine apple, they outsource telephone jobs throughout the nation/ world. hope its true, my birthdays around that time!! :D :D
