Yikes! I started out on 68K Macs and am kinda feed up with transitions. Also, as I'm a cross platform developer, I rather strongly dislike loosing hardware compatibility to anything relevant.
Some (notably cross platform) apps are likely to take a while to transition. An Intel Mac released in 2020 is likely to still get software updates for 4 years, if not the full ~7 they’ve averaged lately.Intel mac sales are gonna tank badly. Who would buy into a dead platform ?
Like buying a Powermac G5 in 2006.
Not even close. No way they ever go back to X86 ever again. This is a really dumb take, sorry. They'll be back with Intel and/or AMD within 4 years. Also, they need to keep improving OSX, they are starting to fall behind Windows.
Yeah, that was interesting. With the Intel transition they gave specific PPW statistics. Just used buzz-words and vague graphs for this one.
Planned obsolescence..
Well, this is my last Mac. It's been a long time coming, but this is the final straw for me.
I wonder how they will fragment their lineup. Usually the biggest difference was processor speed. Will they have different versions of the Mac A14 version?
He doesn't want to Osborne the entire existing range. Hence his comments about Intel Macs for many years to come.I knew if it happened it would be quick. But why say new intel Macs are coming????
Dont worry, it won't be their last mac. People love coming out with their hot takes after major platform announcements. Can I ask why? They seemed to have covered their bases pretty well in not breaking compatibility.
They were demoing those apps on a maxed out Mac Pro. Of COURSE it's going to scroll smoothly. Would be pretty scary if it didn't on one of those beasts. What about a lesser, more realistic machine?
Wow, okay, now what? Actually, I was gonna spend my money and buy a new Macbook Pro. But after this announcement?
I mean technically windows on arm is a thing, but it sounds like office will be native on macOS on arm before it’s native on windows on arm, which says a lot about Microsoft’s commitment to windows on arm just <checks notes> ten years after they first started down that path.Bootcamp was native x86-64 so no.
