Intel mac sales are gonna tank badly. Who would buy into a dead platform ?

Like buying a Powermac G5 in 2006.
Some (notably cross platform) apps are likely to take a while to transition. An Intel Mac released in 2020 is likely to still get software updates for 4 years, if not the full ~7 they’ve averaged lately.

if you make money with your computer and need a new one, you’re likely to replace it again before intel support is completely dropped in macOS.

given the huge unknowns there’s probably an increase in demand from some users wanting to get a known platform secured for the next few years.

I keep wondering how people get the idea that "Apple announcing first Arm Macs this year" means "so my 2019 Macbook Pro just became obsolete". Maybe they should have repeated "new versions of macOS will continue to support Intel Macs for years to come" a few more times.

Now give me *insert a list of unrealistic expectations* for *unrealistic price*!!!!

Yeah, that was interesting. With the Intel transition they gave specific PPW statistics. Just used buzz-words and vague graphs for this one.

I am old enough to remember the PPC > Intel transition. They backed that up because PPC was garbage in terms of performance compared to Intel. They're going to have to give us all some serious benchmarks to prove the performance is there. Especially graphics.

How is your Mac obsolete? It still does everything it did 4 hours before you posted?
How is it an "enlarged ipad" when it is running macOS and apps not available on the iPad like Maya (if that isn't "pro" enough for you, what is?)

Enough with the doom and gloom already. If you are on the bleeding edge of performance, you aren't keeping your computer for the 5-6 years it would take to actually end the life of the Mac you bought this morning. If you are a pro, you don't care about the silicon, only what it can do for you. Do you really care about Intel, AMD, PowerPC, or A12Z if it delivers your product to your clients faster than the last one with fewer bugs? If so, why?

I would have liked to see more specific benchmarks, and I suspect we did not because they were not impressive enough.
A12Z might be a placeholder for A14Z, for the really "wow" numbers.

An iPad on MBP batteries would easily last 18–24 hours.

Let's just hope they tune the right balance of power / efficiency.

Intel has failed as they remain on 14nm. Apple's move was inevitable and is welcomed!

Custom chips for the Mac will obliterate Intel.

Wow, okay, now what? Actually, I was gonna spend my money and buy a new Macbook Pro. But after this announcement?

Believe me, I have more questions after watching that one as well. I would imagine when the first consumer and commercial ARM Macs get announced, we should know more. The fact they have kits available starting today is pretty good sign, plus all those iOS apps will now just work...?

Again, I have more questions as well, so I'm sure the blanks will get filled in as we go through this transition. I'm still comfortable with my late 2018 Mac mini for now and my early 2015 MBP.

It should be interesting to see what the first Apple Silicon Macs are that roll out, and when. They're taking a couple of years for the transition so it'll probably just be consumer level stuff at first. I can't imagine we'll see any this year beyond the Dev Mac mini.
